Flight overview ideas

Jun 19, 2007 Glunnator link
Well, hi! I was playing vo today and a few ideas struck me in the head.
I tried making pictures to make explaining a bit easier, but I'm not a great artist, so they don't look great.

Firstly, when rolling, the crosshair showing the nose of the ship doesn't turn.
I suggest it does! Rolling around like the ship does! That brings the problem of not knowing which of the four lines shows the top of the ship... Ta-da!

My second idea was this: When flying in combat, you strafe a lot, yes? Wouldn't it be nice to know where you're strafing at? Let's try a sideways flight showing thing!

http://img96.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sidewaysspeedxd3.png

This would mean I'm flying left at the speed it indicates... I think this would make flying easier. It would for me, anyway. Flying right would raise the bar on the other half of the line. The colour was supposed to be a soft yellow mixing with the blue of going forward, if you understand what I mean. I also understand this could lead to wanting an up/down bar aswell. I think we could possibly put an up/down on the battery counter bar on the right there, but I don't really see how battery and spped would mix... o_O

Now, these would be my ideas. Not really thought over much, but meh.
You could say your opinion, suggest a better idea, or ask questions...

...

discuss. :)

That's actually a pretty good way of implementing a directional indicator. There's been discussions on this sort of thing before, so I have the right to gloat at your ignorance. *gloats at your ignorance* And now that that's out of the way, you might be interested in this thread.

Also, you can edit the HUD and some other things if you follow the steps here.

Ah well yes, I'm sorry, I should've guessed It've been suggested.

However,
I have no plans to start getting into complicated (or even not so complicated) programming and 3d stuff (apart from playing vo).
Nor was I planning to make it a custom hud.

I was simply suggesting it to be implemented into the game.
(I couldn't find these ideas in the list, so yeh..)

Sorry, sorry, sorry everybody, soorrryyy... ^^;

Added to the list.

The "show velocity direction on HUD" has been a long-requested feature, but I have yet to envision an intuitive way to do this (other than the space junk; that's what it's there for). Your idea isn't bad, but it'd need to include up/down somehow as you said. The whole left bar could be some kind of three-axis velocity meter or something.

The rolling crosshair idea is definitely good though.

For the whole left and right strafing issue...small line above the distance bar and have a central point...when strafing left make the area to the left of the central point light up gradually, increasing with the speed of the strafe. When strafing right have the right half of the bar increase gradually with the speed of the strafe.

For the strafing up and down issue....use his original idea but use THAT for the up and down...make a central point on both the speed and energy bars and when strafing up have the upper halves of the two bars fill up gradually with the speed of the strafe and when strafing down have the lower halves of the two bars fill up gradually with the speed of the strafe.

When not strafing the up or down strafing bars which will be located on either side of the reticle (where the speed and energy bars are) will not be filled up at all.

When not strafing left or right the bar located above the distance meter will not be filled up at all.
Just a thought

**Sorry for the all the details but since I am unable to put together some pictures at work I figured I would draw a picture with words =D

ummm... maybe stupid question here, but why would you want the crosshair to roll? doesn't the whole screen move with your ship? sorry, been a while since I've used mouselook, but it seems to me that that was how it worked.

If not, though, then it sounds like a good idea... also, if you want to know which way is up, just use single-axis symmetry. i.e.

Except that I do not think space has an actual "up" or "down" because there is no "top" or "bottom" to it. Those relative things have to do with how you are aligned at any time in relation to the pull of gravity (or just skip that last gravity part).

Actually, I think the "directional" thing could be done a bit better, and easier. there's a crosshair that shows where the nose of the ship is pointed.. instead of just a single line there, make the crosshairs a little thicker and if its strafing full left, fill up the left part of the crosshair, strafing up, fill the upper part, etc, some combination of the two, show it that way. if its not strafing at all, just moving forward/backward show the crosshair bars as all empty.

SilentWave: your ship has a definite top and bottom, and your screen has a definite up and down, and these aren't always exactly the same, and that's what we're talking about.

uc, no, because I was implying that the top and bottom of the crosshair would be different >.>

It's currently a skinnable thing... and the upcoming SCAR Skin will implement something similar.
Jun 21, 2007 Glunnator link
Thanks for appreciating the idea, but I'd prefer if it was implemented into the original skin, not in a downloadable-custom-skin that I'm not gonna like anyway... :/

Chillax. The nice thing about skins, is that you can make them yourself. Changing the crosshair is the work of a moment.

Good idea, break19. I think the crosshairs should fill up with a customizable color.

cunjo, you totally missed it. that was for relayer.
