Micro-guilds

Why is there a minimum number of people to create a guild?
I mean, I'm in a pretty large guild, so it doesn't really hurt me, but I think that if people want to be in a one-man-guild they should be allowed to.

Seriously.

because you're not a guild if you're alone.

a complete guild should have a leader, henchmen some administrative people to keep the guild in line.

though right now, guilds are somewhat useless. it's more of a way to group people with somewhat common interests and provide them with flags (guild tags) in order to know who you have to shoot in guild wars.

eventually, guilds might become useful with things like

- guild-only items such as cappies or stations
- guild-specific economy (specialty items/prices at a given station for a given ally guild)
- guild bank (damnit) for managing guild treasure/spending on the above
- guild-only ship variants (gosh we can dream can't we?)

i had created [nuts] only for rp reasons and was hoping the so-called auto-dismissal of guilds bellow the minimum would make it go away but even that is not enforced. when i asked to have it removed, it stayed and was later told it didn't matter if it was there.

a 10-man guild is somewhat useless. but a 1-man guild is ridiculous.

I believe that was the intent.

Although it's not difficult to find people. Some chums named Number 1, Number 2, Number Pi, Number 4, Number 5, and Number 6 popped right up when I asked for members to join my guild. Funny how helpful some people are, they'll treat you just like they were yourself...

Yeah sorry Demonen I am 110% AGAINST having guilds that contain less than 10 people or so.

I agree that small guilds are pretty much useless, and guilds on a whole are not very interresting right now, but both of those are beside the point.

What if some poor newbie wants to start his own guild? It's a lot easier to invite new people to an existing guild than to gather up ten people to register one.

@Leber: Care to give a reason why?
@UC: Is it rediculus with a 1-man guild? Why? Not all guilds are stupid 1-hour pretend guilds, you know.

Trying to build a guild from the ground-up is easier if you have a starting point. What if the Most Excellent Guild Features We Are Going To See Soon (tm) require a guild of minimum 10 people?
Also, what makes a 10-man-guild "somewhat useless"? I assure you, a guild with 10 members, all of which are active, is a lot more useful than a 70-man guild where 3-4 are active.

I'm just raising the question of WHY this synthetic number exists.

I concur with upper case. A guild consisting of one single individual defeats the purpose of the idea of a guild.

Single-player guilds have no reason to exist, because they should not receive any bonuses, and what a single-player guild can do can be done just as well by a single player.

The idea of a guild is that multiple individuals rally to an idea, to a cause, which they want to support, and they intend to be recognized as such by their common guild tag. There are other benefits, like mutual protection, perhaps common purse et al.

If you have single individuals form their own guild of only one person, you dilute that defining factor to a near-zero value.

As for the number required, it does seem pretty random, but I think as the game is now, it is fine, in my opinion.

demonen, the "stupid 1 hour" guild in question was used for rp reasons and over the spawn of multiple weeks.

i had even notified the devs about the guild creation and the accounts involved should they decide to remove it for any reason whatsoever. i also requested it be dismantled, multiple times, so to clean up. to do it myself, i'd have to have a copy of the email (wich i no longer have) i had sent to the devs because i dont recall 8 of the accounts i had used (there was my main account, the account i'm using now to post and 8 serialized accounts).

as for the poor noobie who wants to create his guild, he can. the guild creation process no longer has a timeout of 10 minutes as it used to have (such as when i created [nuts]). anyone can create a guild and make invites (up to 48h i think?). that's enough time to rally his friends and complete the guild.

better yet, the noob can join an existing guild and gain a lot more: mentors, protectors, cash and equipment, ore location, tips and whatnot (depending on the joined guild's rules).

edit:
as for the why, it's been said a few times already in this thread and other ones: you can't call yourself a group and hope to be treated like a multinational if you're alone and in your basement.

@Demon:

I have an irrational fear of guilds which are long-inactive or just plain useless. Ask softy2 about it.

Really, I think that having a guild should be an exercise in getting together actual PLAYERS and forming a group that does things together. Otherwise, it's just a cute way to get a tag in front of your character's name. A stunt. A charade. Imagine what would happen when Vendetta has thousands of people online and tens of thousands of paying customers. We'd have guild overload.

SoR is neither long-inactive nor plain useless!
I think...

Anyway, if you kill SoR, you kill me...
