Do away with group limit!

As in topic, i suggest that the limit on the number of people in group be finally lifted.

It makes running events rather annoying.
And there's no reason for it.

Please.

Maybe raise the limit, 8 does seem a bit low. I think some sort of limit is needed though. But I do agree.

I agree,
but you really want to check out this thread on coalition groups / groups of groups / group stats / meta-group / union

One of the best quick-win suggestions out there. Devs ?

I'd love some more group features, yes.
But that won't happen soon prolly, so i'd like a quick fix that just does away with the limit (and i don't think there's a reason for any limit big or small)
and allows more then 8 people to be displayed of course.
But most importantly i'd like it, like, soon rather then SoonTM

The obvious practical limit is the size of your monitor. For people with small monitor, it may require some reworking of the layout in order to display the group correctly.

(or so I've heard - I have a big monitor, so don't see an issue).

we could allow some kind of group linking, so they share group chat, and you could I guess scroll through the groups with < and > keys or whatever. Also radar contacts for linked groups should also be white i guess.

Eonis and I are working on a plugin for that, actually. We'll try and get real progress on it in the next couple of weeks.

as for screen size, even at 800*600 you can easily display another column with names and you already have 16, you can also display name on the health bar and you have 32.
So, even people with smallest screens could see stats of 32 people and right now groups of this size wouldn't Be common.
Also seeing health of other group members isn't the only usefull feature. Theres also radar and chat and those have no problem with screen size.

maq if your running a 15" display it will get tight, a 17" might fit but really for what your talking about i think you really need atleast 19" preferabley a widescreen

it looks like its been implemented on the test server :)
or it might be a bug :)

Screen size doesn't actually have much to do about it lnh.
It's the resolution that matters, all that screen size will affect is how big the displayed list will be (by that i mean not in relation to other elements on screen but how big if you were to measure it with a ruler)

here you go: 32 people in a group with 800*600 res (sorry for crappy photoshopping)

Also, if someone has small screen he could just not see all group members at once. There's not much harm in this.

Of course i'm talking about doing minimal adjustments to the way it's displayed now. It'd be better to redo it prolly, but again i'd like to have it sooner rather then later.
What do you say devs? Is it possible?

i think there should be a option for this in menu>interface>group

you can choose pixel width of the health bars how many players you want it to display at once and how many columns you want sry for the spelling

yea thats the problem maq, people are only confortable reading text so small.

I suppose... but then they can set it to not display everything?
But i think even with so big groups it wouldn't be too small

Hmm, well, I wanted to move towards something more like a group hierarchy, with the current "group" being the smallest cohesive unit. I wanted to keep the "group" size small, as having anything larger than 8 people being cohesive becomes.. difficult. This is more towards "down the road" intentions of command chains and large scale battles. This has been the intention from the beginning, as far as why groups are currently somewhat small.

But anyway, what's the actual desired featureset? Having people all share the same radar color and grouped chat? Is having everyone's health on screen a real necessity? It it isn't, I'd prefer to do some kind of hierarchy feature that allows linking of multiple groups.

I agree, on the one hand you need a tight unit or flight (the group),
on the other hand you need information from a larger squadron or wing (groups of groups) such as:
* grouped chat (can be work-around with an arbitrary channel for the operation)
* track stats such as kills, deaths, etc. for individual pilots and in aggregate.
You could add a group tab to the PDA section for the stats.

Personally I think knowing the health of your direct wingmen in your group (of 8) is sufficient; and to know the health of say 24 or 32 pilots in your squadron would be unnecessary (information overload). Better to show summary information (say in PDA): Team F has 6 members and 4 are surviving in the field (the implication being that 2 are in station or on their way back).

Actually the posting "group stats" has more ideas and function points suggestions: http://vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/15431

I was hoping to get rid of the limit as a quick fix, if you don't have time to deal with it now.
As a more long term goal it can be implemented differently.
But on the other hand, maybe having limits isn't really good idea anyway.
If people want a big group, let them do it, but also give a more complex system available.

As for desired features, shared radar and group chat are obvious.
Having everyone's health on screen insn't necessery and with bigger groups can be not very usefull.
Instead i'd rather see option to report something like low health - kind of shouting 'medic!' that would also make you appear differently on radar to let your team mates know you are in trouble. or other similar things (not sure yet what :))
Also shared targets, and letting group leader set target priorities that would be shown on hud and radar.

Long as we can still see where other group members are, I'm okay with any changes made.

Clarification edit: As long as the location data for the group members is still sent with the group-related events, I'm fine with any changes.

In a large combat situations, it would be good to simply see the positional status of the rest of the squadron. I envision a series of dots near the name of each group, with colors to indicate status. Green for alive and in sector, blue for docked, red for destroyed or out of sector, yellow for docked at a Cap-ship. That sort of thing.
