Pirate Ribbons

You're confusing someone who has committed *any* sanctionable killing within a given faction's space, and someone who has committed an act of *piracy* . . . like booming a player controlled Moth.

All acts of "piracy" are subjective. What really constitutes piracy? If you are not under the protection of any recognized law, then there is no action against you that can be termed illegal. Piracy is defined by legality, and sans legality, is a non entity.

I think that knowing how many times a player has killed in violation of faction space is far more informative and meaningful than how many moths a player has killed.

If you want a moth killer badge, then make it say moth killer badge. If you want a pirate badge, then base it on existing game legalities.

Roda, as a lawyer, let me impart the following advice to you on your above points: Shut The Fuck Up.

I could launch into the fact that your definition of piracy, while arguably meritorious w/r/t the law prerequisite for piracy, is deeply flawed in that it labels all unsanctioned killings as piracy; I could point out that your "law is a prerequisite" argument actually lacks any merit, as even in international waters piracy is still piracy (and simple murder is no more piracy than back on terra firma); I could state that your point about number of faction violative killings being highly relevant information still doesn't establish the relevance of that information w/r/t piracy; or I could try to explain the concept of extra-territorial jurisdiction to you.

But, since everyone here but you can figure out what is a pirate in VO, I'll stick with the simple Shut The Fuck Up.

you're a lawyer? the earth has just exploded in my mind...

but other than that. Badges are cool. Pirate badges would be cool too and the qualifications mentioned throughout this thread seem like reasonable entitlements.

Pirates have always been a part of VO and they should have some type of recognition for their deeds.

It would be highly ironic if someone earned a Pirate Ribbon hunting down 'Moth flying pirates travelling to scoop up their "hard day's earnings".

Mr. Lecter,

You may be a fine lawyer in the real world, but you suck as a lawyer in VO. In terms of game mechanics, my actions in grey have no legal bearing anywhere, not even in grey. If you wish to fix that fact, then fix that fact. Although I would agree with you that not all killings in monitored space are of necessity piracy, I find no better prerequisite to define piracy, in terms of existing game mechanics. If you pursue some other method, you may well find universal POS players running around with a pirate badge. Consider carefully the method you wish to see implemented, and the results that might be reasonably expected.

It's late, I have a large bank with large problems that need finessing, and trying to define VO in terms of law is just stupid (as well as showing your poor grasp of real world legal concepts, Roda)--so I'm not getting into it more until and unless someone more rational than Roda (i.e., anyone except genka) thinks there's a problem.

That said, the concern about Pirate being something Ecka adds to his badge collection for shits and giggles is valid.

Thankfully, I already addressed it (Roda either can't or won't read things that actually respond to his points and then address them during his subsequent posts; he instead plows ahead spouting off only the same points he has said all along . . . in this way, he's actually a lot like Donald Trump's counsel, all bluster and no reason):

[edit]To help iron out some wrinkles: maybe count centaurs, but no kills (moth or taur) count towards the ribbons unless (i) you're KOS with at least 2 nations, and (ii) you have 900+ Corvus faction.[/edit]

The game seems to track which cargo's been where. A ribbon for profit earned by cargo previously owned by someone you killed ought to indicate true, honest piracy rather fairly.

Agreed, profit from captured cargo is more indicative of piracy than moth kills, although moth kills would work too.

Edit: "Moth kills" above means moth kills with Dual-KOS and 900+ Corvus standing restriction.

Edit 2: Actually, having thought about it, profit from "captured" cargo happens a lot outside of piracy, so would not work too well.

Could one of the ribbons unlock cheap repair at Corvus stations? Maintaining a Greyhound is expensive...

Making the Greyhound unlockable by one of the ribbons is also a good idea.

As for what the ribbons have on them, it makes no real difference, as long as they are recognisable enough to make them useful to those being pirated to judge their chance of escape when they are being persuaded to pay up.
