Evolving the ideas:
i am against lending stations. Too complex, not logical. Also against single ppl owning. Instead, a guild/faction can...
BUILD a station, and expand it later!!
To build a station, one must have:
1) 9 (3x3) contigous empty sectors (rules who can build where to be defined. Sectors can have roids only)
2) Loooong list of commodities and ores
3) At least one pplz with "build" skillz, like purify ores.
4) Some time building. Like X man/days. So 2X guys can build one in half day, but one but work 24X hours.
5) Lots of credits, to pays guards and manteinance teams (bots)
6) A formal request to dev team for permission to build
Built stations can:
* public or "secret" (If owner register it, appears on map. Secret stations simply does not appear on map)
* Can be attacked, stolen, lotted and destroyed (Or defended!)
* Have limited storage capacity, ships and goods (N ships, X cu)
* must be paintable (simple color, not textures for start)
* be made of basic building blocks:
-- Dock bay; Storage block; living block; Ore processing block; factory block; to-be-defined block, etc block... (think of lego)
-- Station is usable with at least a dock and a living block
-- Each block must be built, so expansion possible
* Problem: Abandoned stations! What happens if owner never return to it, leave game?
Suggestion: If owner(s) does not dock with it for X days, station is declared abandoned. Most bots leave station for lack of payment. So it can be taken, destroyed or disassembled by facction owning system.
* Ship Repair: Station can repair guest ships for any price they want, but station owner must pay a fixed amount "to universe" for each repair unit. Avoid abuses.
* Station goods: the daily rental paid "to universe" covers some basic goods, like bots and some few commodities, as food and water. Any other commodity/ore for sell must be sold/taken to station.
* Interface with ppl-owned stations is exactly the same as other, it is "client-side". Maybe only overall COLOR to match station's color, and Welcome text. Any ppl provided text must be sent to devs.
This would add really a new dimension on possible missions, like build, find, defend, attack, steal from, trade with, etc.
Also, it would be VERY interesting if pirates guilds are obliged to have a base. Plot is that Factions no longer buy fresh stolen goods, so all goods must be stored for X days before selling. Open space for (force/trade) recovery mission, and track pirates and find location, so on.
Surely total amount of stations on universe must be controlled. Maybe start requiring 9 (3x3) free sectors

Also against single ppl owning
This part of your idea fails miserably. The rest is too poorly thought-out and conveyed for me to bother with it. Thanks for your contribution.

A player owns a ship. A station is a collective thing. Its not your personal garage or store. Is closer to a marketplace...
Also, this game focus on multiplayer. Consider one of requirements to own a station is being capable of motivating X players. And for long term affort, or we'll have a universe full of empty stations... game already have this "structure" and named it Guilds

This is a new low, even for VO, which is notorious for having some really over-eager, stupid noobs.
Your posts also suggest that you are ignorant of, inter alia, the Devs' commitment to not making any content guild-dependent. Thanks for your valuable contribution to these forums, though.

First of all, shut up, lecter. I for one am tired of seeing old, established members of the community rip on new members simply because they can.
Second of all, Alloh, you do have a good grasp of the fact that this is not intended to be a singleplayer game. Personally, I agree that stations should be a group endeavor, and that the game ought not enable the wanton creation of one-man space stations.
However, the devs have stated that they have their own plans for space stations. Earlier in this very topic, Incarnate says that they do not intend to require you to be in a guild to have a station. Presumably they've thought of some other limiting factor.
Thirdly, be sure to wear flame retardant clothing in the future as there are uncanny numbers of flaming trolls running about on these boards.

Fourthly, proper English will help you avoid getting thrashed for sounding like an idiot.
Seriously, Shil: you think I don't rip on "old, established members of the community" when they say something dumb?

Lecter, I do agree with you on this. Stations should not discriminate against a rich lone wolf who decides to build/buy one. The price tag would still have to be hefty, but still, nothing super-important/awesome should be "GUILD ONLY."
