RE:

I must admit that Crusader8389 has totally blogged me under the table.
I never seen a wall that long before in spite of the belittling comments about my so called walls.

Wish the forums had a pm, system.
Anyhow, most of the post sounds good, but as the devs indicate they don't have the time, funds, to implement so likely continue to see empty space unfortunately.

@shanefagan - yep
@thickenergy - right on, could not have said it any better
@PaladinOfLancelot - yep

I don't care what they do I just know space it empty and it's sooooooooooo boring that way which is why I don't play anymore

Perhaps they simply don't understand the topic of sales momentum which once started can't be stopped.

Or the topic of hey there is player here and I'm having fun.

I check in from time to time and there simply is NEVER anyone on
Noobs asking where is everyone etc. and the subscribers posting the same old garbage like it's not good to give out your location, and people don't chat on 100 etc.

Give me a brake, how dumb can a person be to actually believe what they are saying about this; and expect someone to actually continue to believe this.
As soon as they subscribe they will figure it out in the first 30 days.

This is not a jab just a fact.
Players attract other players, and create more content on it's own.

Why not just free keys given out on a limited time basis to test this.
You don't even have to implement anything at all to test this.
You can offer free 30 day subscriptions for the next 90 days and see what happens. OR even 90 Day subscriptions for FREE.
They will come and subscribe whats the problem here.

Why do you have to depend on a few subscribers to give out the elite friends keys anyhow. It would be good if you had 1000 subscribers that could work but there is no one here so it's simply doesn't work to get things going.

Just give the stupid free keys out and get some player in here.
Post em on the web not required to be given by any subscriber

They will convert and others will return what's so hard about it ?

So, do you even play this game anymore?

"people don't chat on 100"

I have to actually /leave 100 when I'm working on a plugin because there is so much distracting chatter, so I don't know what you're talking about. I've seen chat about what kind of framerates the human eye can handle, about the differences between various cultures, about the relative merits between waffles and pancakes, and about how people spent their weekends. I've seen advice about cooking, selecting a new used truck, programming, debugging OS issues, and cleaning. I've seen political rants, religious rants, RP rants, sexuality rants, and "please stop ranting" rants. I've seen singers, poets, storytellers, and schizophrenics.

It does go quiet sometimes when the majority of players are focused on something, but usually all you have to do is break the silence and within minutes you'll be wishing you'd kept your mouth shut. Unless it's the middle of the night in the Western hemisphere, when the Americans are asleep and the Europeans are at work.

I actually have seen at least a hundred newbs in the last few days. Stop trying to rob the Devs, if yer gonna bitch about something... bitch about something legit.
Feb 12, 2013 Captain86 link
Look, this is not complaining
Not even a criticism and NO you haven't seen any 100 newbies in the last 2 days what a big fat lie. LOL

I understand some do not want to change the immersion subject and I'm good with that too.
Much of the immersion portions of MMO games are due to player activity.
It's a real paradox for sure. You take away players from and MMO and the immersion disapates as well.

No players in MMO = no fun for most people plain and simple

All I'm suggesting is to allow a player to get more immersed in the game if that's what your looking for.
8hrs. won't do that and perhaps not even 14days.
Give people a chance to become immersed and also to be attached to their levels, credits, badges etc.
They can't get attached to anything in 8hrs and perhaps not even 14days.

The short answer is:
It's a trial solution that doesn't cost anything and doesn't require a bunch of programming and would attract players.
Some would convert to paying customers no question about it.

Second:
OMG why not offer incentives to people who don't have money for crying out loud !
They know people with money and would love to promote the game to earn free subscription time.
I mean such a powerful sales tool of offering incentives to anyone not just subscribers but anyone to promote and obtain subscribers to earn their subscription.

I don't need the money but to those who have stated blah blah you just want free stuff go get a job boo hoo etc.
Why not put them to work for crying out loud ! Let them promote VO and earn their subscription.
What could be better then a self promoting system that increases the player base, while promoting the business and without major reprogramming; and no pesky expansion / promotion costs. All costs are in house and based on the added subscribers
The 30 day free subscriber will have the chance to sign up for the affiliate program to earn free subscription time if that's what you want to do.

What's wrong with that anyhow ?

I monitor about 20 chat channels (in order to help newbs/find things to do) I have in fact counting todays session seen closer to 200 new players.

What I haven't seen is you, unless you count IRC... so, you are clearly talking out of your ass.
Feb 12, 2013 Sleepy Time link
there is now a google play store option for .99/month, they can use that to see
and I have to say has seen a hell of a lot of newbs on lately
Feb 13, 2013 thickenergy link
There have been a ton of new players around. Between what I've seen in the chat channels and the ones I've come across just doing their thing out in space, ryan's numbers look close to me. Most of them are on android, and many are on during non-peak times. Hell, I've probably talked to a hundred myself in the help channel over the past few days. There have also been quite a few players on that, like me, are trying the game again after a long break.

Contrary to what a lot of people seem to want to believe, 'free' does not have a direct correlation with 'successful'. A lot of details lay between those two points. VO is a pretty niche game from my point of view, and that in itself is a big limiter on its general appeal. The things that would truly bring in new players and keep them coming back, like updated graphics, all seem to be in the pipeline. It's just that with a small dev team that pipeline is pretty long. Considering the forces arrayed against them, I think the devs have been doing a pretty damn good job.
Feb 13, 2013 Detructor link
wait...you are saying there are people in VO? As in no veteran players? Are you sure? Maybe the devs just enhanced the AI of the bots?! ;)
Feb 13, 2013 Phaserlight link
I'm not sure what the point of the OP is, but I too have seen a lot of activity recently; both new players and old veterans coming back to check out the game.

the numbers have gone up as of late but it is still only based on people who talk so it is probably much higher

The game is much busier than 100 would suggest. Don't forget groups of players or guilds might switch 100 off to concentrate on communication for a group objective such as taking down a levi or organising a large convoy.

The only way to really find out what is going on is to get involved and build up relationships with guilds or groups of players.
Feb 13, 2013 Phaserlight link
davejohn has some good advice. Having been in a guild for 8 years, I find that any of the public channels are only the most surficial layer of what is really going on. During my time in VPR, I'd estimate about 80-90% of my communication took place over group, guild, or sector channels, and also by private messages. By no means do I speak in channel 100 (or any public channel for that matter) every time I log on.

I can't say anything else about VPR, except that there is a lot that goes on that someone just listening to public comms would not catch.
Feb 13, 2013 Captain86 link
Chatting on the channels is not considered proof of players or lack thereof but is only a partial indicator.
However, it can't be disregarded either especially if there are claims of increased player activity by the 100's. This would be self evident on channel 1

Seeing actual players in space or lack thereof is the real confirmation.

If I saw these 100's of players flying around doing stuff I'll shut-up about it.
Are they invisible players that only a few people can see ? LOL this is really beyond silly.

100 players would be massive for VO.
20 players constantly online would be large for VO

If it were the case regarding these so called large numbers of players online, I would never stopped my subscription and wouldn't be talking about this now. I check in from time to time with the free trial to see how things might be progressing.

I have not seen any such 20 players online buzzing around from any random login. When that becomes the case I would re-subscribe

The suggestion to extending the free trial period to 30 days is simple enough to give people a better understanding of what the game has to offer with higher probability to be immersed in the game.

Other variations of the trials and friends keys, or open keys of some sort would be good to. Something without a bunch of re-programming.

So whatever.
If your flying through empty space, honk your horn and think of me and say "that stupid SOB was right, there's nobody here".
If you see these 100's of people flying through some sectors, thinks of me and hold your middle finger up high and say "see their they are you stupid SOB".

You better right that down so you have it handy when the situation calls for it.

Lets go over it one more time
Your flying through space and no one is around what do you say ?
Your flying through space and you see like 20 people flying by, and you jump to the next sector and see like another 20 players jumping away, what do you say ? don't forget the middle finger too on this one. That's the most important part of this one.
LOL

Anyhow, I think that wraps it up,

I'm just saying I wish there was more players I don't really care how they do it but it would be fun and I would gladly re-sub.
For now I'm just waiting for that all to pan out.

I did consider building a trident while I'm waiting that wouldn't be so bad I guess.

Umm, we're currently seeing a big influx of people, and quite high player counts.. one of the highest times since launch.

We also have tried giving away large numbers of extended trial keys. Like, say, 20,000 of them last year at Penny Arcade, combined with a big banner ad and a mention in their newspost. These strategies have not been successful. We aren't flying blind here, we have a lot of statistical metrics and running/historical graphs to help us make decisions.

There are a lot of issues with bringing players together, which I wrote about here. There are other issues with business models, which I've written about elsewhere. We're not standing still on any of this.

I appreciate that everyone wants the game to succeed, and some people have negative perceptions that they've built up, but just because you "believe something" doesn't make it true. It's all the more hilarious when someone posts how empty and unused the game is during our most successful influx of users since the Verizon commercial (and perhaps surpassing that, we'll see).

I'd also really prefer it if people would make their suggestions posts to the Suggestions forum.

20 players constantly online would be large for VO

Please stop posting random crap that you make up. That has never, ever been true, not since launch in 2004. Let alone now, where we're peaking almost as high as we did in March of 2011 (TV commercial).

/me gives you the finger...

"there" they are... you stupid, high school drop out, non spelling sonofabitch... maybe you ought to "write" that down.

"see their[SIC] they are you stupid SOB".
"You better right[SIC] that down so you have it handy when the situation calls for it."

To sum it up, you make an argument based on lies, and when people call you on it... you flat out claim they are lying. You also can't spell simple words... do the world a favor, don't fucking breed.

this has been the most active period ive ever seen VO at and my metric is kills/deaths for anybody allied with the serco which is all of my guild, a number of independent serco/UIT supporters and a portion of BR1, all kills are logged to the statistics server so we can see how many in a given day occur.

It's hands down the most busy period ive seen, we also jumped 15 members in the period of a week, and the serco are historically the lowest demographic of new players. Action is still centered around US peak periods.
