Bringing purpose to monitored sectors.

Here's an interesting idea I came up with which might help bring players closer together in this huge universe. For sectors which are labeled "monitored" or have NPCDEFs patroling, perhaps players can check some type of news broadcast terminal in stations to see enemy activity in your faction/government territory. However, such activity is only noted if the person is at least hated by the faction/government.

Basically anyone with the interest of protecting their own nation can be given access to this. The player docks at a station and goes to the "security newswire" log section of the station interface. What's listed there is any enemy contact made by patroling NPCDEF units. Contact may be listed with the following information: Time of contact, place of contact, type of contact--Were they killed? Did they kill an NPCDEF? Was it visual contact? Was it only radar contact? Etc.

Even if the enemy slipped past monitoring units, anys suspicious activity should be noted to help against potential attacks towards your faction/government, including but not limited to: radar contact only, any deaths in the sector (noted from distant explosions), cargo floating out in the middle of space with no explanation, etc. So it's possible that the newsire may feed you information which may be unimportant at times, but still log it just in case for players to check out and add a sense of mystery.

This has a lot of potential to make the game more fun and breathe new life into combat with the new universe. Players can travel in groups and check out suspicous activity. Decoys can be set up by purposely dropping cargo or mines in enemy territory, or setting off rockets on to asteroids. When patroling units (players and NPCDEFs) move in to check it out, the enemy players can then sneak in through another system while everyone else is checking out the diversion.

Before any of this can happen, however, the NPCDEFs need to be toned down so they aren't uber fast or have uber guns. They need to be made reasonably intelligent with their actions, as in do things only players would do. That includes: Not being able to see beyond 3000m, not being able to go faster than a heavy engine, not being able to fire weapons which are not accessible to players, and they should be able to notice visual events in the sector.

This is a great idea.
A lot of strategy options.
A lot of potential fun.
