My view...

After haveing been gone for some time, playing vendetta again has been rather intresting. A few things I would like to see...

Ion storms: I thought the first one was cool, but they happen way way too often. I only play a few hours a day and I seem to spend most of it storm hopping.

GUI: This is a big one. I dont like haveing to type cryptic commands for basic in game functions. Please update the controls gui for chat binds like message tab and chan chat, etc. "New players please type /bind n etc is a little silly. I would also like to see a fps option in options instead of /reallylongfpscmd
A station gui linked to the universal map would be cool. It could show what items you know are for sale at each station if you have been there.

Tutorial: You might want to think about making a interactive tut before you sell this game. The snazzyier the tuts are, the more professional a game looks to me.

Missions: A good way to lower the anger people feel at the game - make it so missions dont reset/cancel on logout. A more powerfull mission scripter with more random ability might be useful to you latter. The current missions are a bit static. I like the border patrol ideas, an expansion on these would be cool.

Ok with that out of the way, I would like to say wow! The visuals have really gotten better. The new skill system is cool (needs expanded greatly for a rpg). The universe system is looking ideal for a large userbase. The last time I played we hade one cool station in S9. Now all stations are cool. The bots are a bit better. Custom colors on ships! Yea!! I personaly would pay per month right now if the universe filled up with players. I can see the enormous tlc the devs have poured into vendetta, and I am very glad this game is not going to be canceled.

One last thing - guilds please!

Some of my impressions might be misguided - I have only played for about 9 hours total. Of course, this is more time then most people give a game when decideing to play it or not.

Perhaps /toggleframerate should be changed to /fps?

For a "NEW" player there are no cryptic commands for basic functions, the reason you are having a problem is because your "wgaf.cfg" file still has all the old commands in it from when you played before. If you delete it, the new commands will be bound to keyboard keys the next time you log in. In fact that "/bind n" message is for the players in your position, as the new ones have that bound automatically.

As for the rest: Tutorial, Missions, and Storms: are all being tweaked and perfected still. Be patient. :D

Some missions don't end on log out. Some do.

Most commands can be set through Options. New players already have everything bound that they need.

The message says If you are NOT new btw.

There is a tutorial mission I believe for new players.

Missions and all that as Cam said are being tweaked all the time.

Really, how hard is it to '/alias fps toggleframerate' ?

"Really, how hard is it to '/alias fps toggleframerate' ?"

You shouldn't have to.
Aug 26, 2004 Durgia link
you don't have to you can just type /bind "key" toggleframerate

or just type /toggleframerate, or just not do it at all:D

you can also type /toggleframerategraph or /bind "key" toggleframerategraph or /alias fpsgraph "toggleframerategraph" /bind "key" fpsgraph etc

Cembandit, so far so good... Now try pirating someone.. ;-) Good Luck (you'll need it)!

Raynes said >>You shouldn't have to.<<

Damn right! I shouldn't have to do all the little binds and aliases that make life easier for me. In fact, the game should come with keyboard-only commands standard, no arcade mode, and all those tricky aliases like /toggleframerate and /roll should be buttons on the HUD! Oh, and there should also be a feature which fires your railgun whenever the leadoff target turns yellow! And a duck!

Well, I guess this post mostly restates what Cam and Durgia have said, but I'll post anyway.

The actual message says "if you *aren't* new here, type..." for the reason Cam explained. I guess I should have said "if you are upgrading from an older version of Vendetta, ..."

What other game function requires you to type in any cryptic commands? There could be a GUI for the channel system, perhaps, and for mentoring, but I don't think it would add much to the game. "/toggleframerate" is pretty silly, because Ray has a knack for naming things. If anyone actually thinks it's important we can rename that, but showing your frame rate certainly isn't a critical feature.

We all agree that the GUI is ugly, and plan to redesign it, but we simply don't have time for that right now. It's aimed to be as functional as possible. Back in 1999 we thought it looked pretty cool...

And there is a tutorial when you create a new character. The current production version doesn't automatically give it to you but the next release will. It isn't super fancy but it covers the basics.

I think we should discuss whether missions should auto-cancel if you log out. We can still retain time limits, just let you leave halfway through. Technically the idea was to have lots of multi-stage missions where you finish one mission, which opens up the next stage as a new mission you can take, etc, and you could log out between them. But this isn't obvious, of course, because a) we don't have any of these yet and b) our current multi-stage missions randomly add stages to the current mission with no chance for you to take a break.

i would like to see missions progress in a logical sequence:
ie: take weapons design to corvas,
return with prototype,
test prototype.

and if your doing a dangerous mission like this, you sould be attacked by thoes trying to steal it.

and every 1/2 month it seems im stunned at how much stuff has changed (for the better) i would pay now too, if i had money -_-;;

a1k0n: "I think we should discuss whether missions should auto-cancel if you log out."

I guess the obvious question is, would people abuse this feature by logging out during a particularly tough mission and logging back in when the danger is gone? Kind of hard to answer right now, but once we have missions that are generated in pairs (e.g. bring this top secret datapad to sector X/steal this top secret datapad enroute to sector X) I could see one player logging off to avoid losing the cargo. This would be very frustrating if your mission were to recover the cargo, especially if your faction standing went down by letting the other player successfully complete his mission. For this reason it seems only natural that players should lose their current mission by logging out, so that they can't exploit this feature.

On the other hand, what about long term missions that may take several hours or even weeks to complete? Imagine a mission that required you to drive down the price of plasma cores in Dau by flooding the market? Or what about a mission to monitor Odia for any suspicious activity over the next several days? Obviously it wouldn't work to have these long term missions auto-cancel when you log out.

cembandit the problem is you no longer have the current defaults. If you want to not have to create the new defaults with complicated commands simply throw away you config.ini file.
Aug 31, 2004 Durgia link
or just go into the options menu and use the reset to defaults button. I don't remember what the button says but I know its in there somewhere.
