a radical alternative to defbots

Sep 16, 2004 thurisaz link
this would probably be quite hard to implement but what if, instead of defbots using deadly force, they used some kind of EMP weapon, towed you into the station, and (depending on a character's level or the degree to which you are hated) either charge you a VERY large fine, or impound your weapons or ship. If a certain Serco pilot flies into Itan, guns blazing; I'd like to see them try to get home in a ship with no weapons... also, I can see defbots more in the line of "law enforcement" then "elite assassin strike team"

I haven't thought about this too much, and it would change the nature of the faction system quite a bit, but the idea intrigued me enough to wonder what other people would think. Comments??

Any EM-style weapon and its subesquent effects would require new code. As would the "towing".

If the towing were implemented as an "autopilot" that follows the "defbot" at close range then it would be much easier because players have created such utilities before, back in the 3.3.x era. They were able to dock, undock, fly around from wormhole to wormhole and jump. They can't be written by players without a substantial amount of hacking now because players no longer have access to the /DisplayShipPos (/DisplaysHippos) command.

However, the devs should most certainly be able to do something like this given a short amount of time. I don't know if they could implement it in the time we have left, though.

On the topic of placement... I think these new EMP-toting Defbots should be placed in one of the following fashions, preferably "b":
-a) in the NT sides of Itani and Serco space and in NT and its affiliates' space
-b) in the capital sectors of any faction (ie, Dau L10, Dau K10, Serco Prime, Divinia, Itan, etc.) excluding Corvus and possibly the Neutral Stars.
-c) only in NT and affiliates' sectors if at all.

Thoughts?

I just really like thurisaz's quote "I can see defbots more in the line of 'law enforcement' then 'elite assassin strike team'". I couldn't agree more.
