Nav buoys

Oct 08, 2004 Bored link
I don't know if this idea has been presented before, but it might be nice to be able to place stationary nav bouys or markers in a sector. I'd primarily use them to locate cargo, since you can't see cargo unless you're within 3k of it, and the sectors are rather large (slight understatement), and there may be other uses. Use could be limited to, say, two or three (?) active markers at a time for any one player. Possibly groups could use them as rally points or something. It would also be nice to be able to deploy some sort of probe or sensor platforms with possibly greater sensor range than 3k, but that and other deployables may be conceptual ideas for farther in the future, while nav markers seem to me to be something that might be relatively easy to implement?

Just a thought.

yes, I think I remember hearing something about an idea for buoys over a year or so ago, but I never paid much attention. Does the forum-search reach back that far??

we've had several threads on this in the past,
My take on it is that it should be something that would be very easy to impliment client side. You add a console command that leaves a marker at the position of your ship similar to the ones we have for the wormholes now,(maybe a different color). if you set the system up so that it is not a physical object and it doesent show up on the screens of anyone else, it doesnt need to be sent to the server.
The only thing it would be used for is a navigation reference for that character. There would theoretically be no limit to them, since it does nothing to the data exchange between the server and the client. Make them targetable by the player that left the marker and deletable when targeted via a console command for easy maintanance.
Probably the locations of the markers could be stored in a simple text file.

I can remember this being suggested about half a dozen times. Its a good idea for guilds and traders and all sorts of things, depending how they were made.

Hopefully another thing added to the big "wish" list

Yes Please to this! How many times have I shot up more cargo than I can carry only to return to the area and not be able to find the cargo again.

You could also use it to mark asteroids that you have surveyed/prospected on.

the cargo might have timed out when you left the sector and wouldn't be there for you to find

don't know if i'd like nav buoys as such, but some positional xyz reference of yourself, and targets, savable to comp would be nice...

Spellcast, the client-only idea is excellent! I was "gunning" for one where the server was aware of them, but I realized when I read your post the sheer amount of extra data the server would have to process if it were server-based.

On the other hand, a server-based nav bouy system could allow the up-and-coming claimjumper to acquire a scanner and find out from which asteroid Player X is getting all his denic ore...

Such a thing could be the equivalent to a personal client side positional sticky notes that tag dropped cargo and system objects. Items with a life span like cargo can even have a matching despawn countdown on the sticky. The whole thing would essentially do what you expect a spaceship's computer of that era to do. Adding a hot key to allow you to show notes and select objects on your combat hud and manipulate the view like google earth would make the vo experience even more immersive if done creatively. I like the whole thing as you could even have sorting fields on the stickies. Quite frankly targetless while useful wasn't what I hoped it would be.

The big problem with this is it allows autopilots that can undock, fly to another station and dock. since the bouys are static positions in space you can use them to make up your own coordinate sets and triangulate your position. since you warp in flying forwards, your heading is also relatively easy to calculate. granted this can already be done by using known asteroids and such, but this would allow for when you jump in with no asteroids in sight

Seems we have a Grand Master (Mistress, who knows) of Necromancy. Someone has vastly too much time!

1. I'm new
2. It's a good Idea if properly done as your ship interface not remembering anything in the vo universe is idiotic.
3. I tend not to look at dates on these things.
