Roid Marking

Nov 24, 2004 TheEgghead link
So this is my first post here, and I've tried to RTFF, so I'll apologize in advance if this has been brought up.

I think anyone who's done any amount of mining knows the frustration of finding a roid with 70% pentric, mining it, and then spending 5 minutes finding it again after selling the first load. I'd really like a way to "mark" roids for mining. I've thought of a couple of ways of doing this:

-A 'navpoint' type solution that stores a certain number of roid locations in your computer so that you can recall (and presumeably target) them when you want. I'm not sure how hard this would be to code, but I will point out that we already seem to have targetable navpoints in the form of wormhole coordinates.

-A more aesthetically interesting way would be to actually alter the appearance of the roid itself. The first thing I thought of was basically a paintball gun. You could fly around and mark roids with whatever color blotch. A more advanced version of this might be an 'etching laser' that you could actually do graffiti or something with. The only advantage to this is that it is world-viewable rather than local only, so it adds to the whole community's experience. I realize this is probably a lot harder to code than the first option, and has a lot more potential for abuse, but I thought it was kind of a neat idea, so I thought I'd share.

I had a thought similiar to this when i was mining today. When I think about future technological advancements, I sort of think there would be some sort of navigational equipment in order to communicate your location to whoever.

Since sectors are (or seem to be) infinitly large, it would be good to have x/y/z (or something) nav system in order to do such things as:

- mark mining spots
- tell someone exactly where you are, since you can't select someone when they're over 3km away it makes it hard to find their location
- stage more thought-out ambushes [for you pirates out there]

I do think such a system would be very benificial. As with any 'feature' you would have issues, with this one there could be such issues as overmining certain areas, but this could be fixed with degrading/changing asteroids (or something arather). From what i can tell, the positives outweigh the negatives for such a nav system.

I would prefer Nav points. Combined with some kind of logbook you could mark any point on the map with a short note what you found there (roid, special sector, etc).

The advantage to a nav system is that it adds 0 load to the servers for a player to type /shippos and write down a roid position on a piece of paper.

we had that soltis, unfortunately it was used to create an automated pilot because the data from the chat echo can be fed out into a 3rd party program.

Make it echo to the screen, but not the console.

Just like that message that pops up telling you to press Activate to dock/jump/etc...

It'd stay up for maybe 5 seconds, then fade out.

No console means no echo means no exploit(especially if the message was rendered as a texture, not as text data that might be possibly grabbed out of memory somehow)

i agree, just flash our x,y,z coordinates on the screen for a few seconds, and we can write them down. this is simplest for the devs, who already have alot of other stuff to do.
