The 'make bounty values player settable' thread!

Dec 08, 2004 Soulless1 link
Quite a few people, myself included, started talking about this as soon as the bounties patch came out.
Basically, we thought that the 1million price would keep bounties so rare that you might only see a couple in a week, and would keep bounty hunting from becoming a viable playstyle.

We suggested that the player setting the bounty would be able to choose the price to put on the players head, from say a minimum of 25k credits upwards.
This would mean that a potential bounty hunter would probably have a fair few to choose from, but would have to evaluate carefully if the rewards was worth the risk in each case.

There were a couple of people against it, but we held a quick poll in channel 100 and most liked the idea.

Just thought we could continue the poll in here, and maybe improve the idea. :)

I too agree with this. The fee for bounty is so high almost no one is willing to pay it. I also agree that there should be a minimum price, for this would prevent players from placing bounties on everyones head. I say the minimum should be around 200k.

250K may be a good compromise value. It not a too large value in VO. I think the concern is to keep say an anti-pirate guild with many members from having each member place say 25K against a target pirate.

1 million seems too high.

"250K may be a good compromise value. It not a too large value in VO. I think the concern is to keep say an anti-pirate guild with many members from having each member place say 25K against a target pirate."

What is to stop 10 /givemoneys to one person, who then sets it for the guild. Even if the limit were high, people would pool their savings, so the limit should not be super high. On the same token, it shouldn't be too low, either, as players would start setting bounties without discretion.

Also, don't forget that it would be the hunter's choice as to which bounty to pursue. Since the hunter's main motive is (typically) money, they would logically be less eager to hunt a 25K bounty when a 250K bounty is available, but that shouldn't stop the less wealthy bounty setter from setting a 25K bounty.

Point: Bounty minimum should be moderate (~25K) but hunters will still pick and choose, so low bounties aren't usually priority, therefore, limits don't need to be high.

"1 million seems too high."

The horse has been beaten nearly to death about this.

Fundamentally, the impetus of the Legal Bounty System is *not* for player-created bounties, it's for automated bounties. Ie, someone who kills enough Itani players, someone who preys a certain corporations trade convoys too much, etc. It is my intention to address player created bounties more directly in the next addition to the bounty system.

In a moral society, it is my feeling that it's somewhat contradictory to even have the concept of a governmentally-sponsored "bounty" that can be placed by any random individual. Thus, my intention to separate them into those bounties which are sponsored legally, and those which are just "contracts" placed on the heads of people. Both methods will have pros and cons.

As far as concerns over the people "exploiting" the system for financial gain, please be aware of the skill loss impact (see the news post) from being the subject of a successful bounty kill. This skill loss can be adjusted until we hopefully find some balanced equilibrium. This does not rule out exploitation, there are still a couple of loopholes that I'm concerned about (and still cogitating on).. but it does at least give an incentive to Not Die.

OK, understood! I am confident that most of my issues with the system (see my other, now defunct thread!) will be addressed in the forthcoming addition of the other half of the Bounty System. After reading your post, the structure of the current system is justified, and I look forward to the potential of the combined bounty system.

I think the only problem is that a bountie hunter do not risk anything.

so everybody is going to be a bountie hunter.
