Exploding roids

Mar 23, 2005 Suncat link
Was just thinking on this the other day and it might bring a bit of excitement to the roid mining? As you are mining the roid it would randomly explode.

The randomness of this would be based on a couple of things:
1) The type of the ore present in the roid. The more common ores do not explode as often, higher end ores do.
2) The percentage of the ore in the roid. This is also affected by option 1 above.
3) The final component would be the temp.

My thought is that the three values would be used to create a base percentage for the roid to explode after the temp rose above a base value. The chance would get higher as you continue to run up the temp.

When the roid explodes you could use 1 & 2 to create a base value for the damage.

If the miner continues to mine the roid, there is a possibility of it exploding again and again as the temp rises. After the first explosion, the damage should be increased based on a temperature modifier.

The last thing would be that roid becomes a vapor cloud and can not be mined until it cools and changes back to a solid. Not sure how the graphical component of this would work, but it would sure look cool.

Just a thought, not sure how hard or if anyone would think this is a good idea.

P.S. You guys are doing a great job on this stuff. Keep up the great work.

I like it. The exploding part, I mean. Without actually destroying the roid, I mean.

I like it. Maybe the roid could branch off into smaller roids.

Yeah, when I was a n00b, I asked on channel 100 what happens when a roid gets too hot. Someone yelled at me, "It APLODES!!!" When I found out this wasn't the truth, I was a good bit dissapointed and somewhat relieved. I would definitely like to see this introduced. It would make mining a little more interesting, and make it so you couldn't just start mining, and then go off to read Sports Illustrated on the toilet. Mining could be ALMOST exciting. Not really, but you know.

Just found this, and it's pretty much what I put into heated roids. I guess I'm not alone...

Maybe if the roid didn't explode per say, but had a eruption. Hot gas and debris shoot out from a hot spot (where the beam hits) or a crack. The roid would be very unstable untill it cooled down, the likely hood of it happening again is high until then. Oh and of course the eruption would hurt. Don't know how much, death? a lot? not much? This would make it so we won't lose a good roid and keeps the server from having to make new roids and such, slowing things down.

Explode miners instead. :P

Explode miners instead.

Bojan, that's the best suggestion, yet.

I got a couple threads on this already, don't waste your time, we already discussed it all.

Every time someone suggests this, atleast something good comes out of it. By all means, waste your time! I once thought up that "larval stage" hive bots would infest asteroids, and if you disturbed an infected 'roid, it'd pop out and explode on your ship, dealing painful, but not deadly damage. They'd definately be making an awful *SQWARREEEeEIEieIEIEIEIEIEiiiIEIEIeiIEIeIIEIEICCICHCHCH!!!111 one oneooene ';..;'" noise as they did so. Somtimes they'd fly out at 20K, sometimes at 100K... so you can never be sure that you're safe.

Ok, i've been discussing this with one of my friends and if we assume that K stand for kelvin. That i would like to see the ice crystal melt or spit in lots of smaller pieces at the point of 300K. Cause, to what i suppose this ice crystal is ... water so at high temps it should normally melt, or crack, or explode...

Just my 2 cents.

No need to assume. The wiki is there for you: http://www.vo-wiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Mining

Make the roids release murlocs at you!

...

Wait. They wouldn't get very far in a vacuum, would they?
Lemme rephrase that.

Make the roids scream at you in a murloc-like fashion while firing missiles that look reminiscent of murlocs at you!
Or murlocs in EVA suits. That might actually prevent people from making flaming-hot roids...

I don't think any kind of live could survive on roids. Unless... But I think Goerge Lucas has copyright of atmospheric roids with giant worms surviving as ship eater living in it. But I would definitely love to see an ice-Yoh melt aways :)

Um, no, nobody has a copyright on that concept. Not copyrightable.

Maybe as an ice roid gets hotter and melts, you get water instead of aquean ore, and as it gets even hotter, it puts air in your cargo, which station might pay more for, but it would be at extremely high temp to make the mining inefficient. You can fly through the roid once its liquefied, taking away most of your velocity. Air would only take away a little, but if it gets way hotter it might damage your ship.

I think we could truly make mining interesting if we got the current combination and made it a whole lot faster ( 2 secs to mine a 10k ore) and then added the suggestion above about the hive jumping out and saying 'RAR' at a high chance rate (eg 1/3 chance of hive every crate). This, I think would give a teuly interesting side to mining and make it more 'ninja' style.
