I experienced problems like many others with the whole screen flickering issue once I got in the game and played around with the video and graphics settings for a couple hours, until, after a while, I figured it was Linux. Well, sure enough, it was. I guess I got lucky but I found myself in Appearance and went straight to Visual Effects (on Ubuntu). I had Extra selected and downgraded to None. Now the game works perfectly.

If you are experiencing the screen flickering issue too and like to screw around with the awesome customisablity you got Linux for. Just take off any visual effects you have. Simple as that.

Do you mean alt-tabing out of fullscreen mode?

You could switch to window mode with alt-enter and then point outside the window.
