What is the best kind of video card?

Jul 03, 2003 jimce3k link
My roommate has a PC and we tried to get the game to run but had some major graphics problems. The radar is messed up not showing thh warp gates and station and there are many glitches in textures ect. I'm pretty sure it has to be the video card. The card is a ATI Radeon 7500. The current Computer configuration is: Pentium 4 2.40 Ghz with 512 cache, 1 gig of ram and the ATI 7500 video card. The OS is Windows XP. I would like to go with a nvedia instead but I don't know which one will work as there are so many choices. The computer is used for mostly gaming and photoshop work and 3D animation. Any suggestions are most welcome and thanks in advance :-)

Well, I have a 64 meg NVidia Geforce Ti4200. Its getting on a bit now but it runs Vendetta perfectly in any resolution.

Nvidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra...it's only...500-600 dollars :) That is truely the best.

There are two of the cards right there. Gainward is quite good so it would be a good choice to go with them.

I also would shop around I've seen these video cards cheeper at other stores. Newegg.com is being expensive.

actually OCAddiction did an extensive review comparing ATI 9800 with 128 megs to the GF FX 5900 ultra with 256 megs.
not only is ATI $100-$150 cheaper, it outperformed the GF
I said it before and I'll say it again. I loved nVidia, but lately they lost their touch and ATI is the reigning king.

"And the winner is.........The FIC ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. We compared these cards in every category we could think of and in the end, we saw better performance overall from the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Did the FX 5900 fail to impress us? No, not at all. We believe both cards are worthy of any good system but we do have to tip our hats to the excellent performance that the Radeon 9800 Pro has showed us here today."

There IS one problem with both of these video cards and old computers, and it is the reason that I only have a NVIDIA Ti4200. They both require separate connections to the power supply and LOTS of power, the NVIDIA FX series especially so. My power supply is 3.4 yrs old and is only 200w, but the new ATI Radeon 9600/9800 require a 250w power supply and the FX requires a 300w power supply. So be sure to check that before you buy.

Also, ATI no longer distributes their Radeon/FireGL drivers for Linux to use with the 9xxx series of Radeons, so be careful to get nvidia if you want to use it in Linux.

Now, to answer your question, it depends on your pricerange. For the <$150, I'd reccommend the NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200. For the <$200, I'd recommend the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200. For <$300, the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 and for <$500 the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900. This is all assuming that you go NVIDIA. If you go ATI, the only cards are the 9200, the 9600 and the 9800, so just pick which one you can afford.

I hope this extremely senseless post has helped you some.

ok ok ok, reasonable suggestion.
GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128mb 8x is the best price/performance ratio, GeForce FX 5600 if you need new stuff. They basically perform the same, except for the new stuff.

Many thanks for the help. I finally decided on a GeForce FX 5600 256MB for $188.00!! as far as I know it offers the best performance for the price.

$188 is a bit high...you could've got a Gainward one for $156 (wooo pricewatch :D)

WAIT! (heh)
the radeon 7500 has a bug that doesn't render the radar correctly.
There's a setting in the config.ini file to help work around the bug.
It is called ps_hack.
Set it to 1 and see if it helps.
Actually, Please try it to test it for me.
Thanks.

awww jimce3k...a non-ultra = bad...check this out

http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDc5LDM= (look at the benchmarks)

"If you like to have your cake and eat it too, you would do well to consider the 256MB BFG GeForce FX 5600, but quite honestly we feel there are better options to be explored."

The ATI Radeon 9600 Pro basicly annihilates it in every case. It's cheaper and runs better.

When the GeForce FX5600 Ultra comes out...which is this month it will be about $200 and will blow the 9600 and the FX5600 non-ultra out of the water. Benchmarks already show that.

And the 5900 ultra will be its superior, and will be blown away by the Radeon 9800 Pro 256 (when it comes out). Sadly, Ati's drivers stink (I've had 'em) and they discontinued Linux support, so to NVIDIA I shall go.

I have used both nVidia and ATI. But I find that the ATI cards are overall a better card for the money. I havnt had the pleasure of using the new nVidia cards yet but as usual the price they are asking for them is too high. It also comes down to personal preference. I have friends who are die hard nVidia fans even though they know the inparticular card may be inferior to the ATI that it competes with.

Right now im running a ATI radeon 7500 64mb DDR made by Power Color. I have major overheating issues with it but thats power colors fault. And even though it overheats and goes "gay" I still like it better then a GF2.
