Ah. It's pretty good. It should loop by default, though...

The buzzing will be fixed tomorrow.

Sorry, monday. Actually, Ray might be around tomorrow night, and we can take care of it then, but no promises.

I tried to come up with a temporary fix, but it won't work, so sorry I couldn't help.

It's not Incarnate's fault, either, it's actually a bug in the sound code (*shudder*) never before exposed. Waylon made the buzzing sound, and it's a really really tight loop, and apparently it doesn't loop correctly under OS X.

/me shakes his fist at OSX

My one sound effect in the game, and of course it doesn't work.

lol.

So by doesn't loop incorrectly what do you mean? Is it starting the loop before the previous one is finished causing some sort of maddening, ear splitting, crechendo?

Is sound handled through OpenAL?

If not, would it help with your sound woes if it were?

No. And maybe, but not in this particular case.

Yes, I made the music. Glad people seem to like it :). It was three days work and not quite what I set out to make, but I thought it was ok for the moment.

No, I'm not responsible for the buzzing noise or looping issues thereof.

The buzzing works fine for me under 10.1.5 on my ibook. Though i wish it didn't cause its soo freakin loud...
Nov 23, 2003 Arolte link
The problem isn't the buzzing not working. It's the volume of it. It shouldn't be that loud. But in any case it's been acknowledged and a fix is being worked on, thankfully.

Not only is it loud, but it behaves funny regarding movement. When you approach a sign, you don't hear it gradually get louder, it just appears suddenly, though it seems to work correctly in the opposite direction.

On an somewhat related note, could you add a wormhole sound effect in the next version?

I think thats a problem with a lot of sounds. The spinning wheel sound and the engine sound also pops outta nowhere like that, rather than smoothly coming closer to you. They're just less noticeable because they're quieter. I'm not sure if this is a Mac sound driver issue or if the sound code hasn't been better refined. I just assumed it wasn't.
Nov 23, 2003 Magus link
I would actually prefer a quieter universe. The spinning wheels and buzzing signs may add ambiance, but overall, they just serve to distract me. In space, you aren't supposed to get all these ambient sounds. I'll admit the game would be quite boring without sounds when people fire a weapon or engine noise, but excessive sounds just take away from the game for me. But I'll with hold final judgement until the buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing is fixed.
Nov 23, 2003 Arolte link
I'd rather have more sounds that personally effect the player, rather than ambience. For example there are no collision sounds now. Metal screeching and twisting would be nice feedback for that, rather than your generic red flashing screen for damage. Also it would be cool to hear your hull creak once in a while as you're boosting across a sector, just to show that you're pushing your ship's structure to its limits. It just gives you the feeling that you're actually in a spaceship.

But hey... any type of new sound is better than nothing at this point. But as Magus said, I'd hate to see ambience be overdone.

"Incarnate is the sound person."

Oh. So he's the one responsible. That buzzing is going to haunt my nightmares if it isn't fixed soon.

SWEET. even with my crap card teh race tracks are awsome. 30+ pings in the all metal ones.

Also the music is way cool. really spacy.
