What would be fun...

OK, so the Capella is out in NPC convoys, the Goliath is available to Long Term Subscribers, and Tridents are becoming more abundant, and everyone seems to have their idea of what each ship is, what it could be, and what's wrong with it, often backed up with real world analogies and various theories on how space combat actually works...

This thread is not about that.

This thread is about What would be fun things to do with a Capella, Trident, Goliath, etc.

What would be interesting gameplay? Because, remember, this is a game. It doesn't need to simulate real life in it's entirety. It needs just enough realism to allow us to suspend our disbelief, and immerse ourselves in another world for a time.

So, forget the in-game politics for few minutes. Ignore how stuff works in the real world. Instead, ponder for a moment how you would like to use Capital ships. How would you like them used against you? What would make you go "Whoa! That was/is AWESOME!"?

For me, it would be the ability make my ship my castle. To be able to home in my ship, and for that ship to be capable of making EC-89s, and storing a small "fleet", as well as cargo (possibly including consumables for repair/reload/EC-89 production. Resupply would be a frequent task). This would allow other players to dock in one ship, and grab a bus, then fly the bus to swap ships, and re-dock in the new ship, etc. A player could launch in ships previously stored there. Ship storage privileges could become a matter of importance. Old, abandoned, or "forfeit" ships might be destroyed, (or scrapped for parts, depending on consumables, see above) to free up space. Or they might be sold at a station like N-2.

Trusted individuals could be granted "Captains Keys", allowing them to pilot the vessel in my stead, at least while I am logged on. It would have a primary anti-capship weapon, and turrets as appropriate to its overall bulk.
THAT would be awesome.

Mine would be for them to cause stupid plebs like Piment who just post "No" to explode as soon as he hops in the same sector as them.

The Capella would cause him to sit there and watch the loading screen for 5 minutes in addition to the explosion.

If a capship can make ec-89s, you would have a mobile cheating station. Sieger's wet dream!

He'd be able to take it to the darkest corner of universe to oogle at his kill count rolling rapidly to an insane amount without getting caught!

@TheRedSpy

Hahahahha that reply wasn't my full one. I'm going to explain why I disagree with this later.

You guys are missing the point here.

This is not a suggestions thread, for debate. This is a "what do you think would be cool to do with capships in Space" thread. Post what you think would be cool, and don't worry about what someone else posted.

Just to restate what I said in another thread, I'd love the cappella to serve as a player owned station. I'd actually put out the effort to build one for that. As it is, I'm not very interested in the cappella. The trident is plenty of a cargo hauler for me.

JJ, if I do that in the darkest corner of the universe, how can little wee-wees like you get triggered by it then? :-P

Anyway... Since this is also "what we liked". I really liked the 7-ports on the Goli! Was it too much? Hell yeah! But it was super fun. Won't ever have that again. Awww... I would shred Hive Queens in 27 seconds back there. Haha.

Hi, I'm Jakp and i'm addicted to VO.

What I would love to see with cap ships is this: Imagine if the Capella ended up being the central ship in a task force for a guild. The base of operations. Many players have suggested manufacturable stations, and as such, the Capella could fit this role fine.

I envision multiple versions of the Capella. In addition to the hauler forms that the NPC voys use, there will also be combat versions and a base ship version. The base ship version would have a ludicrous amount of armor and shielding. The trade off for its defensive capabilities would be a 24 cool down after jumping through a wormhole. Sector to sector jumps would also be quite slow (maybe 30 minutes or so).

Moving the base ship Capella would be an under taking. Members of the Capella's guild would have to all be online to escort it to where it is needed. Or risk discovery and/or destruction during transport. Once successfully moved into position, the ship can enter station mode, which takes about 20 minutes. It then can deploy 8 defensive turrets (including 2 missile turrets). When then turrets are deployed, it is considered a station, and all members with a key get a green "S" on their radar. It will take another 20 minutes to change the base station from station mode back to ship mode.

In ship mode, the Base Station Capella is highly vulnerable. Slow and limited defensive options (single rear turret).

The smallest cap ship, the Goliath, should be able to dock with the Capella. To bring it supplies (needed for light ship manufacturing, new turrets, ammo for reloads and defensive bots such as furies). Docking would take place on the bottom of the Capella where there are no turrets. The Goliath would not dock internally. While docked, the Goliath's power would be joined with the Capella's, and could help speed up the Capella's shield regeneration in a combat situation; or vice versa.

Only the base station Capella can manufacture new ships, and be used as a home station. AND only when it is in station mode.

The transport Capella is already in service, nothing more needs to be mentioned about it.
--
The assault Capella is more of a heavy cruiser with light carrier capabilities. Same armor and shield load out as the convoy Capella, but it also has a a bunch of auto gat turrets for defensive purposes. In addition to those, it is fitted port and starboard large ports. With these, a multitude of weapon load outs is possible, including avalon torpedo.

The Assault Capella has limited cargo storage compared to the transport, but has more docking bays. The limited cargo space is offset by the supply Goliath that can dock to the bottom of the Capella and reload the cargo. Just like the Base-ship Capella, the Assault Capella can also recharge shields faster if a Goliath is docked. A docked Goliath can also reload the Assault Capella's ammo based large port weapons (and repair Turrets if they are destroyed).

--

As mentioned above, there is a supply Goliath. It has limited self defense capabilities(a single rear turret) and no large port (maybe a single small port). It has even less armor than the current Goliath. It is the only Goliath that can dock with a Capella. The Supply Goliath carries more CU than the standard Goliath.

--

The Trident would take a different role. While it can sometimes be found attached to the task force during major engagements (like incursions into enemy faction space), mostly it used in missions by itself with a few other non capital ships. It is self supporting for smaller tactical missions. Where as the Goliath is used in support of the Capella for roles missions/roles.

--

While all the capitol ships are highly important, they are useless without a full compliment of non cap ships. In today's language, we would say : boots on the ground.

tl;dr capital ship task forces would be awesome

That's great! Acceptance of the problem is the first step to freedom!

What I would like to do with capital ships of all sizes is to hijack them.

I would also like to be able to ram them into each other to cause reasonable amounts of damage.

I would like for collisions between normal ships and capital ships to damage the capital ship's shields in an amount proportionate to their mass and relative velocity, but also to take large amounts of damage themselves.

I would like to use larger capital ships to tow or push asteroids and use them as kinetic weapons against other ships.

I would like to use capital ship weapons to explode asteroids to create an expanding field of shrapnel that would damage small ships within range.

I would like to use capital ship weapons to shatter big asteroids into a dangerous field of small asteroids, forcing people to traverse that region more slowly. Small ships would have to dodge around the roids, and capships would have to sustain losses to their shield in order to push through and clear a path.

I would like to use capital ships to abduct smaller ships, murder their pilots, and then haul their ship and cargo to a station for reselling.

Several of these things are probably not good ideas to actually implement, though.

@JakP duuuuuuude, wicked awesome!

@pizza: regarding asteroid feilds, perhaps a system in the theoretical universe expansion could have most of the center sectors taken up by a large fractured conglomerate mess with small debris asteroids drifting from the larger shattered peices?

Yeah, im not too creative atm, so ill just comment on other people's...
