Just noticed this in the Play Store. Is this legit? Priced at $2.99

So is this a GS release and if so, what's new with it? Do we have any comparison videos or screenshots?

look likes a very new thing. only 2 reviews...a 2.5 star rating, i would test it out if it was legit but its not comparable for my phone sadly, but then again i don't play mobile lol. i am questioning why they have it on a price if its F2P on mobile tho, if it is the real GS game then how does their F2P work into play if they need to pay for it, i could not find screenshots related to the normal VO game on the play store. I don't know if its legit or not so i wont say yes or no.

Just a guess, Daydream version?
Mar 25, 2017 incarnate link
It actually says, in the app description:

This "HD" version of Vendetta Online includes special enhancements over the regular free game, including:

- Google Daydream VR support, on official Daydream devices (Pixel, Pixel XL, Moto Z, etc). VR support is optional and not required, the game can be played in either "Touchscreen" or "VR" mode.

- Rendering engine performance enhancements and improved ASTC textures for recent devices.

So, yes, it's the Daydream version. And like the Gear VR version, it costs $3 up-front. Because it's really time consuming and expensive to make a VR version, and there isn't a large enough VR market to support a purely "free to play" model there (although both the GearVR and Daydream versions are "F2P" after the initial purchase).

So, it hopefully gets us a small increase in revenue, much as we've seen from Gear VR.

From another standpoint, it also lets us have a "high-end requirement" client on the Play Store, as opposed to the traditional version which has to be super broadly compatible. This one is ES3.1 only, and will probably end up 64bit-only.

Thanks for the reply. So is there any reason to buy it if you're a regular android user? If it's an improved client / graphics Id toss the $3 for it

Aww, nice! Too bad I havent got a compatible device....

What stink palm said. Also I don't know anything about daydream, but does this mean it will work on cardboard?
Mar 25, 2017 Stinkpalm link
Says in the description on the Play Store that cardboard is not supported

Fragmentation much?

So, I just installed this on my Moto Z, what kind of PC-style goodies can I expect with the ASTC support and rendering changes?
Mar 26, 2017 incarnate link
So, the HD version uses ES 3.x instancing, for an increased framerate, along with some other tweaks. We may eventually add in geometry shader support too, which is part of why I wanted an ES 3.1+AEP capable version out there.

The ASTC texture quality is much higher, although that effect may be subtle. It's definitely noticeable when comparing 1:1 on things like normal maps. It's visible in VR too.

The ASTC version is currently the highest-quality assets overall (of any current version), I would say. That'll probably change when we release an upcoming BC5/BC6h/BC7 compressed texture set for PC, but regardless.. the ASTC stuff looks pretty good.

Nice. Glad I picked it up! Any of those changes making its way to the gear vr version? Considering the device range is restricted by the gear vr itself to higher end Samsung devices. Or should I just buy a Daydream :P

Edit: Is the framerate better on the Daydream than Gear VR?

ah ok, sorry i missed that other info lol.

If I recollect, most or all of the "HD" changes actually originated on the Gear VR. We did the Instancing implementation on there, and I'm pretty sure we originated the ASTC assets as well. So, in a sense, the HD Daydream version is our "back-porting" the updates over to regular Android.

Edit: Is the framerate better on the Daydream than Gear VR?

Hard to say, depends on the specific device and other factors, the two system work a bit differently. I'm also reluctant to make pronouncements of comparison, because both Gear and Daydream are iterating pretty fast (so I might say "X does Y better!" and then that changes a week later). But..

- Gear may currently have an edge in VR product-polish right now, a bit smoother with less "drift". Again, that could change week-to-week.

- Daydream is fixing/improving stuff quickly, and may eventually have the most expansive ecosystem, with devices from a wide variety of OEMs.

In either case, be sure you get a "real" bluetooth game controller for playing VO (Steel Series, Moga, Razer, Nyko). Yes, we support playing without one.. but it's a whole other level of "experience" with a serious game controller.

In the case of Daydream, get a higher-resolution device for VR usage (Pixel XL, Moto Z, etc), as opposed to the regular "1080p" Pixel.

Incidentally, if you bought the "HD" version on Android, we'd really appreciate it if you could give us a 5-star rating.

We took a bit of a hammering from the webserver outage, and although we only have a few reviews total, I'd really like to try and get us up over 4 stars.

I love your game and all obviously, but you should delete topics of you asking people to give you a 5 star rating or any type of rating. And delete this response too.
Apr 15, 2017 yodaofborg link
Why? I do not see it as a bad thing. It is no worse than the popups you get in most playstore apps saying stuff like "Do you like the game? Rate us!" - as long as no incentive is offered for a good rating, it is simply asking users who actually bought and like the app to give it 5 stars.

The forums are public, so anyone reading them can see the comments asking for a rating, even people who may not like to give 5 stars. The playstore review pages are notoriously bad these days too. Skimming the first few pages of many "top" apps shows this. It is quite obvious that someone is paying someone for reviews somewhere (or just simply bottin' it up), at least guild aint stooping that low!

I have zero ethical problems with asking people to post a 5-star rating, if they think the game deserves it.

The problem is, most people don't rate the game at all, including those who like it. Generally, products are rated disproportionately by people who are unhappy, as opposed to those who are happy, which leads to ratings deflation.. which is why Yelp is filled with people whining about some waiter who didn't refill their water-glass quickly enough, and not the larger majority of people who enjoyed their dining experience.

Look at the Play Store reviews for the regular Vendetta Online. We get constantly slammed by several specific groups of people, including:

- People who are non-English speakers, who despite the super-clear description (first line!) that it's an English-only game, and then further localized-warnings upon install that the game does not support their native language, along with (translated) explanations that localizing our game is very complicated and we're a small indie.. decide to 1-star us on a daily basis and occasionally comment and say "NO TURKISH" or whatever.

There are several other groups as well, all of which we try to inform of our limitations and realities the best they we can, but people simply "want what they want, and want it now" and their response is always to one-star the game. It doesn't matter if the game worked well, and did everything it claimed it would do, they're just unhappy and "want to make that known".

So, frankly, the whole star-review thing is a joke to begin with.

Every big mobile shop (EA, Glu, GameLoft, whatever) has entire support staffs of people who look for problems and negative-review spikes on particular devices, and then rapidly bans those devices from having access to the game. Along with various other techniques to keep their star-ratings up as high as possible.

I don't have those resources (and there are like 25,000+ types of Android devices). But I sure have no problem with asking people, who are generally inclined to like the game, to simply give it a positive review if they think it's deserving.

I'm not paying people to review it inaccurately, or promising some special benefit in exchange for a favorable review. I'm just trying to get some honest positivity from our core audience, who already likes the game, to offset all the grumpy transient jack-asses that write negative reviews like "I really don't like MMOs". ("THEN WHY DID YOU INSTALL AN MMO? What am I supposed to ****ing do about that?").

So it looks like the HD version is not available for tablets? I don't see it in the store on my Samsung Tab.

Also, on the HD version on my Pixel phone, Moga Pivot does not have a compatible co figuration for its native mode A. What's up with that?
Sep 20, 2017 yodaofborg link
That is answered on the Android forum. I honestly prefer mode B myself, its more customisable and you can rebind the back button. There really isn't that much difference between the two modes except in A mode a few of the buttons seems to be hard coded to menu and back. There also isn't that much difference between the HD version and the normal version, except maybe some slightly better optimisations for VR. which you would not use a tablet for anyway?
