Piracy etiquette?
Hello, I'm new to both VO and MMOs in general and I want to rp a pirate character. However I'm not sure where the line is between just some piracy in Grey space and being a jerk would be. You aren't really a pirate without a little pvp, and obviously attacking players significantly lower level than yourself is not good practice, but beyond that I have no idea what would be a good sort of Pirate Code of Conduct. Any thoughts? Am I over thinking this? Thank you for your time!

Professionals have standards.
In general Pirates in VO have a few rules they tend to follow, though they are just "guidelines" since they are after all pirates:
1. The pirate wants something in return for not killing you
2. Pirates tend to give other pirates "professional courtesy" if they also tend to follow the same guidelines.
3. Pirates don't like challenges to their reputation for keeping a bargain.
4. Pirates understand the faction system so that they can strategically address players hiding at stations.
5. Always hail for payment before killing a pilot unless they have tried to run repeatedly in the past or have insulted you
6. NEVER EVER kill someone who has paid unless they mock you and you revoke the deal publicly.. if you do on accident, compensate them with money.
some prominent pirate guilds:
FAMY (Family Galactic Travel) parades as insurance company run by the mob,
@X (Jolly Roger) behaves like cliche pirates from all of your favorite old films speech and all,
EDIT (Enigmatic Dukes Invoking Thalassocracy) a foreign accent that can't be identified and a play on foreign scammers online and on the phone.
CLM (Cargo Liberation Movement) acts as though your cargo is being held hostage and they are there to set it free by killing you
there are guilds in VO that are called pirate guilds but are not actually for instance:
#DIE is not a pirate guild, they just kill for fun
BUS kills for fun (murderers)
VOID kills for fun (murderers)
GOB kills for fun (murderers)
KOS kills for fun, aims to be KOS with every guild possible.
I'm sure others will correct me on these if needed and the list is long. Have fun with your role play and stick to it. When you stick to it, people will begin to appreciate it in VO.

Even in those guilds that kill without demanding anything there is a little etiquette.
As a rule be in-character on public channels, be as mean as a good pirate should and yourself (polite and consolatory hopefully) in private messages. A secret element to those four guilds Mr.Meister has listed, is that they are all secretly lovely. In and outside of character.
