Martin runs to defend his 1mil+ bounty, not avoid dying.
Apr 16, 2005 Shapenaji link
Kopus, how many times have you run now?
Apr 17, 2005 Apex link
ahh the good ole running thread. This one will reincarnate untill the end of time.. or at least untill running becomes impossible.

people... This game is gonna have runners, people don't have fun dying, and they don't like traveling to replace their ships. People are also going to to what it takes not to die, if that means spamming the proms, then so be it. If you don't like it, find a way to beat them.

If you don't want to fight runners, try to ignore them.. I find that those who run are often not quite aggressive enough to defeat you if you don't actively fight them. I had been dealing with an annoying runner once, that ran from like 6 fights I had with him. I eventually just stopped fighting him, and joined other battles. now of course, he followed me around popping shots at me.. I paid attention to him whilst fighting others, then i suddenly turned around and filled his face full of gauss. 1 kill. He didn't see it comming at because i'd been ignoring him for a good 2 minutes straight.

There's always a way. Shape, surely you can relate with this. But seriously, there's no use complaining about this, people will always do it.

IA aren't full of veterans, and most of us are not too hot in PvP skills. those that I have trained, I have also trained about honor in combat. In a legitimate fight, give kills to those who earned it. ONLY if they earned it.

and a rocket ramming skyprom is never a deserved kill. *flips off all prom pilots* :)

Ah, I was just singling out Kopus cuz he was bein accusatory.

I've done the ignore-kill thing too. But most of the time it doesn't work unless you're running dual gauss. Which I don't.

But when it comes down to it. I'm just trying to change some bad habits that people have picked up. Sure there will always be runners. But usually, the more experienced players either rarely run, or have a damn good excuse (?- you need to work on yours :P).

Its just that, You have a lot of people trying to learn how to fight better. And when you start using swarms, and running, you make it known that you really don't care about getting better.

And why should anyone fight with anyone who feels that?
Apr 17, 2005 LeberMac link
I agree with Shape. <shudder>
I think you cannot learn to fight "better" by getting close and then firing off all of your swarms and flares, then turning tail. Anybody can do that, anyone who can afford to purchase a Ragnarok with missiles.

I have a good reason for not using swarms and flares: my aim sucks. If I don't fight with energy weapons I will surely run out of weaps before my quarry is dead, and that is just no dang good.

Getting better at combat is my purpose for my frequent trips to B-8 as of late. Doing it in a Rev C, going up against Proms, getting sniped at whilst engaged, keeping track of multiple targets while attempting to avoid swarms and trying to stay out of AGT range - it's definitely a LEARNED skill. Holding your own on the field of battle and emerging victorious from a duel to the death is worth FAR much more than the ability to hit and run.

Well the IA doesn't have very strong centralized control right now. I often have to take up discussions with guild members about whether attacking a player in certain situations is defined as greifing/honorable (Krazy yesterday), with no real guidance from the leadership. And I don't think you can blanket that all IA members are missle spammers and runners. I for one hardly ever use missles, but still manage to suck at energy weapons. Sure we will run sometimes. If I have a ship that I had to spend 15 minutes collecting compenents from I'm not gonna go up against a AGT prom, but I can't tell you how many times i have died from dog fights with pilots in B8....

Arrr, the life of a real pirate in space is hard. I had one of your IA members at gunpoint after I gave him a friendly Yarr with instructions and some flares. He agreed, so I waited for the cargo or payment, and suddenly -poof- he logged. If this happens again, i will not be friendly anymore to any1 and go straight for the kill. Hey, I need to make a living too, you know, parrots eat A LOT.

I had a small and friendly conversation with him after that, trying to make him realise that this spoils the fun for every one, and I hope you guys will educate your members better not to exploit these features of the game. This was another fine example of IA conduct, please do something about it, cause things like this only smuther your name. He seemed to get the point, so I'll forgive him for that.

Educate your members IA Cause Sh*# like this spoils everything for everyone. Imagine this becomming a habbit with all the new players, what kind of game will we have in the future??

And now for the record: Yarrr, better jettison or pay up when ye see me, or ye be vented. Don't take me lightly ye scurvy ducks.

I'm IA council, and I think it has to be remembered that IA is a very newbie-heavy guild. It generally takes some time before new players really internalize the "warrior code," (I'm sure some of you can remember when I didn't) and I do try to discourage people from using especially lame tactics when I see them. However, on the whole, I can't say IA players are on average better or worse in terms of sportsmanship than the player base as a whole, if anything they're a bit nicer. Honestly I think a lot of people smear IA just because they don't like to admit they lost to new players on fair terms.

That's quite a strong accusation in my eyes Kopus Tol. Maybe you can refresh my memory but if I remember correctly:

I flew into B8 to see what was happening there. I'd just logged on and was having a look.
Sectorlist showed you, ?, and another Itani (IA I think).
I decided not to fight and started heading to 3000m to jump.
You guys chased and fired on me. I fired on ? in self defence as he was in a Valk nipping at my heels.

I'm afraid I don't see the issue, unless someone else can enlighten me. I didn't start a fight, I was simply passing through.

I think it's black lance's code to never run from a fight that they've engaged. I respect that, and I don't believe i've ever seen that code violated before. I wouldn't blame anyone for leaving a fight they didn't start, especially if they're still injured from previous fights.
Apr 18, 2005 LaMas link
i have seen it violated several times by certain BLAK members...
Apr 18, 2005 Shapenaji link
Mind naming names? when you say "certain" Blak members, either you mean particular ones, which is something that can be fixed, or you're just trying to give our guild a bad name, so elaborate please.
Apr 18, 2005 Hoax link
Yeah Maso, you sound like BLAK bashing Vipers what with being all vague with your guild slandering accusations ... for shame.

Oh yeah ... never mind.

I started playing VO in January. I remember after a week or two sneaking down into grey space. I was combat lvl 2. I ran from everyone.

I started doing ctc at lvl 3. I started with ctc because the rules seemed clear: If you're near a transport you're involved. I got shot at, as I expected to be, I shot mostly at the transports because I still had no idea how to fight.

I remember back then passing through B8 and seeing shape fighting I think 5 people at once. It was impressive. I sat still by the rocks and did not join in. I had no idea if this was a challenge or what. I didn't know if shape was enjoying this or not. So I just watched.

I feel this way often in B8. I arrive and people are fighting or just hanging around. I don't know what people want, because everyone is different.

The first pirate I met was Martin. He pirated me properly, then we talked for a bit afterwards and he gave me many useful pointers about fighting. I'm not very good at it though, not Martin's fault.

Waiting in B8 on night soon after, waiting for martin to finish a duel because he agreed to duel me after. Sitting still by the rocks. Serco comes through the wh and blows me up. Happened again a few days later, but I was more wary this time. I was waiting for a duel when a different serco came through the wh and started shooting at me. I hit the tab key and took off. I was at 8% and never fired a shot. he called after me runner, coward, etc.. I was still lvl 3 at the time. i don't think he deserved a pk, should I have stayed and fought, starting 92% down?

Time goes by and I have fun with ctc., basically stay away from people I don't know, had a few fights, but never fired at anyone first (except in ctc). Found that some people became quite friendly only after they blew me up a bunch of times. maybe because the pressure was off, dunno.

Then came the cap ships. To me they are in a way like ctc. One either attacks or defends. If one attacker comes to a cap ship and there are 8 defenders, expect 8 on 1. Or vise versa. The goal is to either destroy it or keep it safe, I don't believe running or spamming is an issue at all because it is not a duel, more like a group mission.

In a turret last weekend I shot an attacker and lost 1,300 combat points because of his level. oh well :)

I can unserstand player's frustration regarding running if one is attacked then the attacker flees to repair. I don't understand it when one is attacked when not looking for a fight and is ridiculed as a runner for leaving. I've been playing VO for almost 3 months and still find myself confused by the varying behaviours of even the same people. I don't get too upset really, maybe just then but the next day it's mostly forgotten.

I think frustration will remain because different groups expect different behaviour. After being blown up by the same persone a number of times one night, i asked why and was told that it's because serco and itani are at war. Other serco have joined with me in group activities and we've had great fun.

Through experience I've learned that not all BLAK act the same, nor do all SoR, or SSF. I imagine the same is true for IA, IDF, EnB, etc.. Unfortunately I have to remember who the individuals are. I have meet people in each of these guilds that I like very much. And some are jerks. But the jerk/not jerk status does not matter in ctc or cap ship wars because it's not rooted in the individual. if people want a fair fight I recomment issueing a duel challenge.

Just my $0.02

Well put Harpo, 'tis a pleasure to play VO with you. :D

Hoax, we passed on a list of names to Lebermac, and its one of the reasons that he's being understanding.

If you like, we can send you a list too. But I thought you were more or less aware of the events that have happened, as we basically told you when they happened.

But yeah Harpo, you're right, not everyone in a guild always holds to the code. But HAVING a code that's strictly enforced minimizes these occurences.

EDIT: For me a runner has always been someone who starts a fight, and then leaves when its clear they've lost.

If they choose not to fight, they're not a runner.

Hoax, I'm borbii at gmail, send me a list of names, we would really love to know if we have any cowards in our mists.

When I stated that I never shoot first outside of ctc, duels, or cap ships, I forgot about yodaofborg. I have shot at yoda first on occation because he has consistantly fired at me in the past when we've met. So I figure, why wait? To his credit he does have argueably the best space-pirate name.

I'll second some of the sentiments in the last few threads... I've had a (I fairly sure) newer member or two of BLAK run on me recently after starting the fight...
