What is honor?

Honor varies from person to person, side of the issue. An itani guarding Deneb B-12 in the old times (when it was empty) with a spamrag may think he is being honorable by preventing Serco fighters from getting to the BP sector. On the flip side, the Serco think he is a just a spamming ninny.

That was just an example, but how do you define "honor"?

A person who wants to be "honorable" is a person who cares what people think about him. Since honor varies from person to person, it's not something solid, just an opinion. In this case, we can translate honor into peer pressure, and everyone knows what that is. Know another side of honor could be what one person thinks of himself. How a person sees themself is very important. A person that always tries to do the right thing, and that knows it, can see themselves as honorable. However, if you see a cat about to ge run over in the middle of the street, what do you do? stay on the sidelines, or jump in, grab the cat and toss it like a football, allowing yourself to be crushed and killed? In my opinion, honor is just another invention by humans to be able to manipulate on another.

From teh dictionary.com:

8. b. A code of integrity, dignity, and pride, chiefly among men, that was maintained in some societies, as in feudal Europe, by force of arms.

So let's have a huge fight (but leave the girls out of this), and whoever wins gets to determine the meaning of honor in VO, deal?

In VO, I believe honor to be no more and no less than respecting your enemy. Showing people the same courtesy in combat and out of combat that you would have them show you. If someone earns a kill by beating another in combat, they should have it. Ideas as simple as that.

Imagine yourself in your own sights instead of your enemy. If that changes how you would act, you're probably not being very honorable.

Plus it makes the game a lot more fun. Because if you run from someone then most likely they're going to run from you the next time you would have had a kill. If one person runs, the other feels no reason why he should stick around when his opponent wouldn't do the same for him.

If everyone ran from combat, VO would be the most boring game on the planet. But conduct in combat is only part of what honor is.

Honor is for ninnies.

Honour on the other hand, now that's a concept worth striving for!

Honour is a faulty concept. The only way people really count you as honourable, is if you live up to their ideas about it. Other than that, I'm in full agreement with Ghost's view. Try to treat people with some respect when shooting to kill.

From a character's point a view, honor is defined by one's respectful obedience to the rules of engagement and principles set forth by a nation (or subgroup group of said nation).

If a nation deems torture as inacceptable and condemnable, then it would be dishonorable to conduct such acts as a member of that nation (take that, Bush).

Most nations view an individual's sacrifice as an honorable and, inversely, sending someone unwillingly to his death is dishonorable. Similarly, turning away from self engagements is being dishonorable to oneself and, if the initial engament was honorable to begin with, dishonorable to that someone's nation.

One's self sacrifice can sometimes be dishonorable as the means to achieve a goal might not be honorable, but the ultimate goal might be honorable.

Examples:

Mogul Velaio acted dishonorably by engaging into acts of treason by setting free one of his nation's enemies (Dr. Lecter). However, his ultimate goal was the protection of the Itani by demonstrating (through his previous act) that the enemy is still a threat and therefore gain support for the war effort. We can deduce that Mogul Velaio is honorable but acted dishonorably to achieve his nation's goals. (Hey, he _was_ sick and delusional).

Space Hunter is part of nation of proud warriors. He blindly engages any of his nation's enemies on-sight and never warns about his attacks. Though the Serco are proud warriors, it's questionable to view unannounced combat as honorable or dishonorable. It would, I suppose, depend on the guild, but he's not part of a (real?) guild. However, Space Hunter WILL disengage from combat he has himself initiated and run away. So, we can deduce that Space Hunter is dishonorable. (And a sissy.)

Honor is putting the greater good before your self.

The real question how ever is what the greater good is, and who gets to pick what the greater good is.

Honor is doing your part in what must be done, even knowing that nobody else will do theirs.

Honor is giving your life for a higher cause.

Honor is giving your all in a fight, and then dying in it.

Honor isn't about survival on the battlefield - it's about trying to take as many down with you as you can.

Honor is respecting your enemy as yourself, and then fighting to the death.

An Honorable opponent is always respectful of the people they kill as they are of the people who kill them, and they pay their respects thankfully after the battle, no matter the outcome.
