The Amazing, All-New GOLD!

Did that title catch your attention? I thought it might. This thread is on what's wrong with gold and how to fix it. Why would I help my mortal enemies that shoot me nonstop (including several n00b chars and ItaniNation(Vault) in a bus)? Because I am a nice person.

1. Learn your own limits and don't brag so much. I cannot stress this enough. You think you are all big and bad, but most vets can take down any of your best. However, the numbers are well on your side, with only a dozen or so vets hanging on in Itani and not many more/less in Serco. So stop bragging before you drive your new acquisitions right back.

2. The n00bkilling has to stop. Test chars of mine have been killed by golds, namely Rolan. So has my ItaniNation(Vault) char, which has yet to fire on him at all.

3. The pirating should be cut down. Do you know how annoying it is to be pirated nonstop by people that claim to be non-pirates? Rolan and Bank(Vault) (both new to gold) are two such examples. They will most likely respond to this thread with statements that they don't pirate. Well, live with it, because they do.

4. Stop trying to steal the other n00bs. It give you bad press when you offer 20k (I have this on record) to an Itani n00b so that they will join Neutral Territories. It's just not a good policy.

5. TO THE DEVS: Stop the availablitiy of switching. It's not very nice or inspiring to a team to have all of its members switch to another team because of the fortunes of a momentary war. Oh, and take out capping and instead put a frigate in each nation's sector that can only be killed by the opposing teams. It makes more sense now.

Now, this was INTENDED to be a flame. So don't complain. Or delete. Thank you so very much.
May 16, 2003 Tempest link
1. You speak of the Neutral Territories as a single entity, when in fact it is the exact opposite. Unlike the Itani, which have a definite structure and goals, the Neutral Territories is a single blanket name thrown over a large number of individuals and organizations. Yes there are pirates, and newb killers, and arrogant, self important jerks. There are also traders, peacekeepers, and humble, well mannered citizens. When you say "You think you are all big and bad, but most vets can take down any of your best." you are yourself making an arrogant statement, because you are stereotyping all of N.T. into one, and placing yourself above that stereotype.

2. The Itani also have pirates and Newb killers, and while there may be fewer of them in your nation than in ours, consider the proportion to your active population and then think twice before accusing us.

3. I agree. I hate people who claim to be pirates, and then attack fighters and busses, which are obviously not being used to carry cargo. This is not pirating, this is simply elevating yourself at other's expense. The two worst offenders I have seen in this regard are Icarus and Phoenix, neither of which is gold.

4. I must say I have seen no such practice. I switched to gold from red, without any monetary incentive, simply because I liked gold's backstory better than I liked red's. Players have the right to choose which nation they want to affiliate with, for whatever reasons they may have.

5. There are strong arguments for both sides on this issue. I personally remain neutral. As to the frigate idea, why not do both?

In conclusion: You may be a member of the Itani government and an influential player, but that does not give you the right to tell people what to do. Your suggestions are appreciated, but when you start your post with "This thread is on what's wrong with gold and how to fix it", you are implying that your opinion is the only one that matters, an implication that will not be looked upon very kindly by anyone.
May 17, 2003 xochiluvr link
The problem isn't the Neutral Territories, the problem isn't Gold Nation, nor is it solely Gold nation players.

The problem is uber-noobs who think they are unto the Gods. You will find these uber-noobs in ALL the nations.

I'm sorry, but if Arolte or Rolan or StarFreeze (or Roguelazer or Sam or Takumi or Peregrine) want to brag, they have some right to do so. They are skilled. If Icarus or Phoenix fought fair more often (which we know they're capable of doing), they could claim that right honestly as well.

Now, I'm ranked 129 on the top list - and I'm not that great a fighter. But of the hundred and twenty eight players ranked higher than me, only FIFTEEN of those players have more pks than I do - and mine were honest kills in fair combat. Excepting the few truly skilled players that simply choose not to defend/cap flags or fight other players, that means most of them got their score from botting. Many of those listed are the uber-noobs I speak of.

One night a week ago a few Gold noobs were bragging about how great they were. The parked in a roid in sector 11 and team chatted about their superiority - there were a good six of them or more. They were going to go to sector two and kill any players they could find and grab the flag. I switched to Red, gave EarthMkII the cash for a promy (he'd just started the new version), and the two of us capped Gold.

Of the six or more braggarts, not one defended. However, a lone botter in 6 tried and I killed him with only a 2% loss in hull. He chose not to come back for more. By the time I docked with Gold flag, at least four of these great and powerful warriors had logged off, and the other two were completely silent when I asked them why they didn't defend.

I suspect you'll find players of this type in every nation. More than suspect, I -know-.

To address some other points, Blue has more pirates and griefers than any other nation. Red has Ic and a few minor others. Itani has Phoenix and Janelle and Nihm, three hardcore griefers who are easily the equivalent of Ic in terms of bus killing, pirating and pking, and other like DS4, etc.

So point for point, Roguelazer, my response runs thusly:

1. Don't brag about the greatnees of your supposed government when you don't even pay attention to the actions of your own citizens.

2. Practice what you preach.

3. See #2. And if you're still whining about what was done to you when you came on after 3.2 came out, get the **** over it. Phoenix, SF and others did worse to more of us than Gold did to a few of you.

4. If someone is bribing n00bs to join gold, I've not heard of it. However, when SF was on Blue in the 3.1 days he used to do it to us all the time and neither you nor your precious Government said a word. In space, no one can hear your hypocrasy. If they can, I doubt they care. Maybe you should concern yourself less with a few your noobs switching to Gold and more about making better use of the active players you HAVE. A nation in motion tends to stay in motion. So start moving.

5. Again, limiting the choices available to the consumer is NOT balance, it's a sure fire way to see this game die a slow and festering death. Though Celebrim and I disagree on many things, on this I think we agree. Maybe if your "Government" found a way to encourage your players to participate more actively, you could solve your own problem. After all, if you're willing to circumvent the devs by forming your OWN government, why do you need them to solve YOUR government's problems?

To borrow a phrase, "The avalanche has already started. It's too late for the pebbles to vote."

I agree that balance is needed among the players. If you paid a little attention, or read through those crocodile tears, you'd see the post *I* started on that very subject already.

However, the devs seem to be concentrating on other things at the moment. So it's up to us. And frankly, rather than seeing your attempt at dumbing down Gold to match Blue more evenly, I'd rather see you posting ways for YOUR nation to get off that high horse and back into the GAME. Your nation was given every opportunity Gold and Red was, and even an advantage - new players gravitate towards Blue nation because it's the easiest selection in the character creation screen. If Blue squanders that gift, that's YOUR problem, not mine.

SOOOO Rogue doesn't get the response he wants on SF's board, he comes and posts it here... ahh well..

First, Xochhiluvr: EXCELLENT post.
Second, Tempest: EXCELLENT post.
Third, Rogue: No comment.
Fourth, that's all I have to say on the subject.

Furball: Actually, I posted here first. You got it BACKWARDS. ha ha.

Oh, xoch? SF has been on gold MUCH MORE since 3.2 than on blue. His Bank(Vault) char was gold in 3.2 and he was on that more than his blue StarFreeze character. Just a little btw note.
May 17, 2003 xochiluvr link
Roguelazer, you have a very limited memory. For better or worse, when SF was on as Blue, he fought as Blue. He tore us apart - that your nation could lose such a skilled warrior is a testament not to his traitorious action but your team's horrible sportsmanship.

When he was on as the Bank(Vault), all he ever seemed to do was trade. That has changed somewhat now since his main character is now Gold, but again I say that is Blue's Folly and not Gold's treachery.

Your problem with Gold is basically that it is successful. I would argue that the vast majority of our successes have been achieved through honor and teamwork and skill rather than deceit.

I agree that some changes to the game need to be made for the sake of fair play, but you made certain that THIS thread isn't the one in which to have that discussion when you decided that you would flame rather than merely state your grievances and possible ways of solving them.

If you want to whine, take it to another board, SF's or your own. If you have worthy, logical criticism and reasonable suggestions as to how those problems could be solved, try using the suggestions forum.

/me throws out another borrowed phrase for Roguelazer to reflect upon:

Faith manages.
May 17, 2003 SirCamps link
And people wonder why DS4 died.... I had an ongoing rule that when I played, I only attacked those that attacked me. Now of course there were many (re-emphasize the word) exceptions. If someone was boasting, or I was involved in a team action, or I saw a large bounty, I often attacked. However, like xochiluvr was saying, I played as Itani. People complain about pirates, but I often don't see pirates coming until players can become members of team 0. What we're judging on is how often an enemy attacks a player of another team. Personally, I'd have no problem if people tore each other apart if they were in the same sector. It would require much more teamwork to survive. However, the general consensus is "Ooooooh let's not shoot and enjoy the beautiful skybox or ships."

Gold is very successful, and I think there are some unlegit critcicisms of it, but one thing is for sure. Golds possesses the largest number of all-out jocks. By this, I mean those that break the unspoken agreement mentioned above. A notorious person is Furball/Rolan. When I started playing again, as both SirCamps and [TTA] Escort, I could not get out of the station no matter how much I begged and pleaded. I was told that it's just "furball," and nothing was personal. Phoenix and Starfreeze (as blue) were the same in 3.2.0—they just attacked and attacked, whether it was a Centuar or EC-88.

So, do we abide by the Don't Kill Your Enemies All the Time rule or not? It's for you to decide. If you don't you'll get attacked, even though you never fired. If you do, you may be labeled a "pirate" or "@$$hole" by the ones you kill, but, you're just playing the character. Don't Itani kill Neutral or Serco (and vice versa)? Think about it, an Itani patrol finds an unprotected Serco transport. What's he gonna do?

But, what finally prompted me to leave was the self-righteousness of the Itani "government." I put that in quotes because they are not official. They're just a bunch of friends who got together and decided to vote on each other. Fine, have fun with it. But when I get an all-caps message from a "General" Verdandi demanding I get the helloutta 6, because he didn't give me permission to be there, um, yeah. I was then told that because of my actions, I was causing many "high-ranking Itani" to leave.

So my mixed alliance invasion prompted someone to doubt their dedication to what, a team color? Jeez, guys, lighten up.

Personally, I think the game would be better off if people just shut up and didn't let their ego get trampled on. If someone taunts you, killem and taunt em back. If you can't killem, get a couple teammates together, one waiting at a station, the other swarm the player—he will die. Remember, this is not a "game," nor is it close to being one. The devs have said the current system is unbalanced. Live with it. Would almost be better if the devs gave us unlimited cash for fights, and then say, every other week, restore us to our earned setting to test economical settings.

SirCamps: I'm sorry you felt the need to leave because of the actions of the so called 'government'. However, the so called 'government' is becoming increasingly irrelevant in the day to day actions of blue. We have built up a good base of players that have all the skill of the old crowd and aren't carrying around as much stupid baggage and huge egos that some of the old vets are/were. These players and myself are doing our best to install teamwork and sportsmanship in the new players, as well as overcome the almost paranoid fear of gold many newer players seem to have by taking it to gold as hard as we can just to show it can be done. There is already signs of increasing mutual respect and teamwork amongst blue that hasn't been evident since before the so called 'Itani Government' came into existance and a bunch of peoples egos got in the way of the team. We would welcome the return of any players that left blue due to its stupid internal squabling, provided that they wouldn't bring that squabbling back with them. We would welcome anyone that wants to experience the challenge of climbing your way back to the top. I really think we are on the cusp of returning Blue to being a competitive team again, though whether that's going to survive the 'old gaurd' recognizing this quiet coup of mutual respect overtaking the elitism of a few I don't know.

I have no particular greivance with the actions of gold. They took the lead fair and square and they worked hard to do it. I don't think that gold as a team is any worse than any of the other teams, and I know that they haven't abused thier power any more than blue did when we were the top team. I do however get a little offended by Gold's snide comments about thier superiority, Gold telling Blue how to run the team, the bragging of Gold n00b's who hide in Arolte, Blaster, and Asp's shadow and who are otherwise only dangerous when they outnumber people 3:1, the lack of good gamesmanship and so forth, and I will challenge gold's hold on power in any way that I feel is valid.* Afterall, competition is the essence of a game and essential to a game being 'fun'.

(*Invalid things for example being switching teams to demine or snoop on the other teams chat, etc.)

Couple of comments to this.

A) GOOD!! WE NEED the competition. I'm not saying that in an egotistical maner. There are times when one wants a GOOD fight! AND it's best to have competition so that OUR skills don't fade. :)

B) For those newbs who DO mouth off, PLEASE go ahead and show em who's boss. IE Kill em once or twice. BUT WHEN YOU'RE GOING TO DO THAT, LET US KNOW! Hell, I'll HAPPILY back off and I will then TELL THEM WHY I'm backing off.

C) I'm GLAD to see that another team is working on teamwork! I'll bet you folks are finding the game more enjoyable yes? :)

D) IF a gold member is making snide remarks about another team AND it's not brought about because the other team is mouthing off. (IE we HAVE earned some bragging rights). Well, if it's bad and/or obnoxious, go show them they are wrong. Again, let us know that's what your doing and personally, I'll back off... and I'll tell em WHY I'm backing off. IE "Well, don't open your mouth unless you can back it up!"

E) I DO ask that other than the above, you don't go OUT of your way to target newbs AS SirCamps/DS4 DID that "fateful" invasion. Ya want a battle, come after the vets. If you catch me with 1 mil in cash on hand AND you run me broke... well.. that's MY FAULT for getting caught in that situation. I KNOW better. HOWEVER, a new player who JUST made his first million... he/she doesn't. And they are going to be proud of making that first mil... and they aren't going to want to lose it... so BE aware of that fact please!

F) Finally, GOOD luck Celebrim! I'd LOVE to see blue back in a competitive spirit/fashion. It'll make the game more fun!

you fully know well enough that I will never do something like this, I will maybe hit them a couple of times and just stay dodging, but I won't kill them repeatedly, you know me that much "at least I hope so"

But please, let them now that attacking some players can prove unhealthy for them, like for instance if people attacked StaFreeze then they surely knew that they would be death. I hope that you instruct your newbies on that. I always did that, but when there are some mouthful newbies,I will just ignore them UNTILL they attack me, and when that happens I will go to the fullest of what I am able to and try to shoot them. But I won't just shoot them because they mouth off. The ignore button is there for something ;)

I doubt that one "n00b" was killed during that battle. N00b meaning someone who had less than a 10,000 score. You (Rolan), Biscuits, and Roger Ramjet were so effective in stopping our attack that most of the action (or even all) took place at the 6/11 gate. I also would like to point out that not even a week later, Gold invaded Serco's sector 12 saying they would kill all the n00bs there. You know I did not specifically target n00bs, we targeted a sector. However, Gold specifically targeted the n00bs in sector 12 for death. Believe me, I was there and on and saw it.

As far as I KNOW, the govt was supposed to be a "kick in the pants" sort of thing for the blue nation, and if YOU have problems with it, SirCamps, complain to SF. It was HIS idea in teh first place as far as I could tell. He set up the elections, government boards, etc. And I never said high ranking officials were leaving. I said PLAYERS because of things like that.

Don't lie.

And I agree with everyone else that we DO need to pay more attn to who we are shooting at. If their score is low, we should be leaving them alone after one kill. If it's high (say 30k+) then multiple attacks are okay, AS LONG AS YOU AREN'T OVERDOING IT.

Really, the attitude from gold players who come in 12 and attack obvious n00bs is quite ... entertaining , and does in fact create spite towards the Gold as a nation.

Quote from the other night as I created a n00b char to see what happened and wether gold team really was that annoying.

Gold:> thats sucked
Gold:> you wern't supposed to be good

And the cute TPi team, who takes the cap as a pretence to go in, kill n00bs, and get out....

...without anyone even picking up the flag...

1) Firemage was the named that I was threatened with. He is high-ranking in your government, no?

2) I don't want to sound like I'm picking a fight, but, this prompts the question "Why?" Why? Why are we supposed to be pay attention to who we are shooting at? You guys over-play the role of nations (to the point of setting up governments) and then underplay it by saying don't attack "all" enemies. "Ooooh avoid their vulnerable players!" DUH no!

Let me create a hypothetical situation here for you.

Itani Task Force entering Sector 7.
Itani Escort Fighter #1: "Sir, we have 5 Neutrals on the screen, dispatching."
Itani Escort Fighter Wing downs 3 Neutral [for Celkan's sake] "over-30000 scorers."
Itani Escort Fighter #1: "Sir, I see two Neutral transports inbound for station 7, request permission to engage."
Itani Strike Cmdr Verdandi: "Permission denied, we're not after transports."
Itani Escort Fighter #1: "Uh, sir, what are we after?"
Itani Strike Cmdr Verdandi: "Shut up and take orders, it's not nice to attack transports or un-trained pilots."

Granted, the situation is fake, but isn't that, uh, just a little bit ridiculous? If newbs don't want to be killed, they should ask for an escort, most aces (myself included) would gladly help out a newb financially or through escort service. But hey, you fly alone in the galaxy in a bus? Well, the galaxy just ain't a safe place.
