ALT Play: Unwritten Rules & Guidelines

Aug 12, 2016 H.Hornblower link
I know what my views are, but I want to hear yours.

1) Can a main account be held responsible for the actions of an alt? If so, under what conditions and how might alt blowback be avoided?

2) Is it bad form for a main or alt to duplicate the views or actions of an alt under seperate identities? Is it bad for form to use alts on the forums to amplify one view?

3) What is alt separation in your view and how to accomplish it?

4) Do undisclosed alts detract from the ability to trust in VO? If yes, how so?

5) Any other input, questions, or opinions on alt play.

1)Yes, for every action one makes in VO,there's someone out there who will have issue with it. Avoid blow back by not being careless.

2)Bad form, I dunno...but a little pointless if you ask me if the identity is separate but the goals are not. I do this in order to fly valks and Proms....but my characters are "Nith" and "Nithandreal". I do the whole multiple forum acct post thing. I think it can be bad form to use it to make your side of the argument seem more numerous....I avoid this by only using multiple accounts as replies to threads I start, and gear them more towards humor than anything else like winning an argument. I only actually debate people on this account. And I make my other accounts named something obviously still me: like "FAMY customer". I also never use it to bump my posts, as I feel that is also wrong.

3) alt separation is having two our more characters that have nothing to do with one another. Like a TGFT that has an alt just to Deneb with RL friends. Our a FAMY who has one to make movies without making those around them feel like they're going to be pirated, and therefore gets footage that's not just people running.

4) No, it's foolish to ever trust anyone other than yourself. Alts didn't invent that.

5)If you really want to trust someone, voice chat, much harder to hide your alts when you know what someone sounds like. Or at least it becomes an easier thing to verify.

All just personal opinion of course.

Gotta say, "alt play" sounds like the dumbest sexual fetish out there.

Isn't it just using the other hand Genka?

I am fully committed to my dominant hand, and would never stray like that. I am gentleman and a scholar, not some sort of floozy. *tips trillby*

I agree with most of what Nithandreal said about all points. Just to add a few words though...

1. Using knowledge from one character to the benefit of another if a good way to cross the line, in my opinion.

2. 100% mirror opinion of Nithandreal. This seems pointless as all hell, and in particular, if done to get one over on someone else a complete waste of time. Unless someone uses the whole multiple characters to defend stations. This has been done quite successfully from what I hear.

3. I have quite a few alts. None of my characters use any of the information that the others would have access to. I do this easily because my goals amongst my characters are not related, similar, or have any overlaps in agendas. Easily put, the knowledge of one of my characters isn't the same knowledge of another. This can be hard to do for some people, but my shitty memory and lack of fucks given about the results of my characters makes it quite easy for me.

4. It is a video game. Makes friends. They fuck you, then don't be friends with them anymore. The worst thing that can happen to someone in this game is they die and lose something they've been working on for a few months. While I would never downplay this to be anything less than devastating, it's not like you can't go and redo everything that was lost.

5. On a final note I'd just like to say that alts aren't the worst thing about VO. It allows people to play different roles and avenues of gameplay. If not done properly they will be exposed and the person behind the character will eventually lose credibility to the point that they can no longer socialize with anyone meaningfully. So, I'd say just play the game how you want to and don't break the ROC. We all pay to play this game on some level, even the F2Pers have to pay something, somewhere to get on the internet, so I think you should be able to play the game however you'd like.

Came here to make a "blood play" joke, only to find genka already nailed it (so to say).

I am fully committed to my dominant hand, and would never stray like that.

Is ghost handing with the dominant hand cheating, genka?

If you make your alternate toons known, I consider them separate or same at my convenience, depending on what benefit it is to me or mine.

Thanks all for the contributions. Very helpful insight. I wanted to clarify my guild HHTT in plain words. Although the truth of this is buried in my posts, sometimes my meaning is obscured. I came back to the game with five leveled characters. My main (HH), three station bombing characters(Vajrayana, Theravada, Mahayana), and a covert transporter/manufacturer (Allowat Sakima). They each had their role to play in my game and created largely to offset a superior, symmetrical threat. With the station bombers I could single handily occupy the efforts of sometimes four to six hostile pilots. With my covert pilot I moved a significant cargo literally right under the noses of hostile pilots.

Fast forward to the creation of HHTT. There are two primary reasons I encorporated all five of these characters into one guild: firstly, the enormous benefits of being able to move credits around from alt to alt without any assistance; secondly, I personally find the manner in which some use their alts to have a negative effect on gameplay. This is not a judgement, simply an opinion. You pay to subscribe so do what you want to; it none of my business. So for the record: for the time being, all the pilots in HHTT belong to me. Not HHTT, but the human whose name is on the credit card that pays my subscriptions.

Now, as to the 'ethics' of such a move, I find no contradiction. I work in the Class VIII transportation business, tractor-trailers to most. Not every driver is an over the road hauler. Some are city drivers. Some don't mind being away from home for weeks on end. Some like being home every night to kiss their wife and hug their children. I feel that's represented in my guild. Without going into specifics, some are sector operators, some operate inter-system, one or two claim all of VO as their area of operations.

As to 'alt seperation,' I'm working on that. Primarily through individual speech patterns and back stories. In the coming days I hope to develop at least a short biography of my five primary characters and share them on the HHTT thread. For now I know this much:

After a many trying months engaged in combat actions under the banner of TGFT, H.Hornblower begin to ponder the futility of persistent war. Having always been curious of the eastern philosophies, he retreated to the monasteries of Eo. There he came under the tutelage of Khenpo Gawang Rinpoche at the Pema Karpo Meditation Center. A lineage of monks that can trace their teachings all the way back to the Buddha of ancient Earth. There he and his fellow trader Allowat Sakima formed a close bond, cleansing their spirits of destructive habit energy. Brothers in mindfulness and practice, they returned to modernity and set out to create an enterprise that reflected The Eightfold Path. With H.Hornblowers considerable resources and Allowats family business contracts, they began what is now HHTT. H.Hornblower providing the financial capital and lending his name and Allowat overseeing daily operations and managing production.

*It is noted that H.Hornblower plays no part in the conduct of HHTT and is simply the primary shareholder. I accept that some may not recognize and honor this distinction.
