Do You Hate any Pirates?

Jan 26, 2005 Martin.mac.au link
I've seen a lot of threads about pirating and a lot of ire from some people, even from some people who don't even play the game. (And yes Renegade, I am looking at you).

Please just write briefly your experience and opinion of pirates. so I can see if there's some kind of consensus.

I don't hate pirates, but my charater's sure do. Although I have written some posts that may make me seem anti-pirate, I'm really not, and in fact think that they add excitement to the game. I do dislike how piracy is practiced in the game. The fact that pirates are more interested in me giving them money, than in taking my cargo bugs me.
I've actually only been attacked by pirates a couple of times (maybe more, but I don't consider Serco pirates, I just expect them to attack me) and I think I've only been killed once by one. In an unsually honest moment you might even get me to admit that there has to me a greater reward for piracy, because I think that right now it's a loosing proposition and that grey space is way too safe unless your playing CTC. I also think that pirates will be cooler once the universe expands a bit and your not flying through the same sector 2 minutes after you were blown up and running into the same pirate.

I hate hte pirate pretenders... who just shoot you up because they want the pk but do so under the name of pirating since they know that if they encountered you in the same setup they would not even stand a chance.

I do not mind pirates per se when I have the time to play and have a lot of money stashed away and getting pirated 24/24 does not hurt me that much. And yes in th epast during the 25 sector universe this happened. I lost more then once a couple of millions by getting pirated and afterwards killing them in the ships they were using to pirate me.

I miss the goodnaturedness of the game whereas people respected each other and found it more important to have fun with each other then to say I rule over you, I can kick your boxorz. That was the game I loved and which I would pay 15 euro a month for easilly. This however changed a lot the more and more FPS and PVP oriented people entered the game. Since they got bored of shooting a bot or not being able to kill somebody minding his own business or actually just remembering that the object of playing a game is to have fun and not a competition all the frigging time. In my eyes if you want that, then quake or unreal tournament is more oriented towards that. IN MY EYES an MMORPG is supposed to be for carebears being fun when we want to have fun and with likeminded people and for the rest being left alone for the rest.

It sure wasn't hard to get pirated in the past when you needed a bit of the thrill. You just asked one of the people you knew willing to do the chase and you tried to deliver your goods. You saw somebody chasing you, and you took the liberty of trying to defeat him in no matter what ship you were flying. If this by accident was a heavy ship, then you used your supreme armament and higher hull to saok the damage he inflicted on you and kill him before your armour ran out. If you succeeded that meant you had earned the cargo, if you failed then you only lost a ship and some cargo. but it was all good natured.

This however changed drastically as stated above. People wanted to have fun on the expense of someone else. As long as they could make somebodies elses mission fail they were happy. If they could make somebody else poor, they were happy. If they could say I ruled your wraith in my valk then they were happy. etc...

That is what I hated about the new age pirates, they never learned to have respect or show respect for anybody else, the only thing they know/knew was how to satisfy their own fun on the expense of others.

And then came the griefers and the griefers' griefers and the pirate hunting griefers and the... all in the name of roleplaying and harming someone else fun just for their own egoisticallity.

That and that alone was the time I decreased my time on vendetta and why I didn't ptp. That and that alone.

And nothing has changed, since I did hop on from time to time just to look at the chatter and the insults etc...

cheers

PS: /me glares back at martin :D

So PLEASE find a game that you can do that with. And stop trolling out boards trying to make the game into something it isn't.
Jan 27, 2005 Renegade ++RIP++ link
I found that game, it was called vendetta.

But your probably right, ill just stick to singleplayer games. Or go to guild wars.

I have not been pirated that much. In fact, on some trade missions I have deliberately gone several systems out of the way to see if I could attract some pirate attention to make the trading more fun, and still I have only been pirated three times (hey martin, you were number 3!). And I don't even know if one counted because the guy was in a govbus and I was in a maud. That seemed more like a bottle covey than a pirate :)

But I agree with the roach in that piracy should be more profitable. I also like the idea from the /givemoney thread about increasing the value of cargo. Not increasing the amount of profit that can be made on it, just increasing its buy *and* sell prices to make cargo a more efficient way to pirate and to give the poor pirates a little trade xp on the side, too :)

Renegade I don't think you and I are playing the same game.

From what I've seen almost all the players in V-O currently are respectful of other players. Even the pirates are. Hell, Yoda, Shape, Sebastian, Holden, myself and a lot of other people you would classify as pirates are also some of the first to put their hands up and offer help to new players.

I don't know what piracy was like in the before the game was released but if it's how you describe it it has no resemblance to the current game.

I have never seen any "rox0r your box0r" talk or even any insults except from one noob whom I was trying to help (not kill, help as in offer advice). I have never seen any gloating after a fight either. It's pretty much all "Good fight", "Yes indeed it was, what did you kill me with"

In fact I think the CtC generates a lot more rivalry than any piracy does.

Now maybe it's just from the times I'm online. Maybe it does get heated when I leave but at this stage it's the best game community I've ever had the honour to be a part of.

@Renegade "I-don't-play-this-game-but-I-know-everything-about-it" RIP

I think the Devs should charge you 10bucks per month for wasting the bandwidth of the website with your trolls.

We don't care what you say. I don't even READ what you say, except that your posts are long and I have to hit the "scroll" button a lot longer than I would like to spend my time with.

If you are sooooo concern abou this game, how about paying 10 bucks per month to support the devs? Eh?

/ignore

The time I was ever killed by another player out side of a duel I was killed by Shape. I was in a pimped wraith and thought i was unbeatable, he asked for money I told him to try and get it and he killed me in less then 5 seconds. I then messaged him and we had a nice chat, he gave me some tips about the game and we both when our marry ways. I was surprised at how nice he was, after all he was suppose to be the bad guy. So I figured if the pirates were that nice then this was a game I had to get.

I love the pirates, with out them i may have never bought VO.

I can't say I've been pirated much. Less than 5 times in two months.

The very first time, I was a total noob. Level 2 and 3s. I was in a wraith, on my way back to Jallik from Odia on a trade mission. It was Tramshed. He poped right on front of me in a flash and hailed me. Then he had this 5 second countdown going before he would blast me to bits.

I didn't even know about the /givemoney command and was utterly confused at what was going on. I stopped my ship and as I started typing to ask how one gives money after looking in F1 help, my ship exploded.

I was forced to abort my mission (faction hits), buy another ship & weapons (expenses), he got my cargo (the bastard) and I got upset (little did I know).

That was during my 8 hour free trial period. I must admit it gave me second thoughts about buying into VO.

Then I learned about these things I didn't know that made the experience worse than it really was. I was only pirated a couple more times after that (while I was paying for VO). I remember Shape and... hrm... well, someone else.

To this day, still, I (my character) reserves a bullet for "trashme". In due time buster! You owe me a few crates.

But now, though, I (me) knows it's all in good fun. I've had nice chat encounters with some pirates, after I easilly evade them.

How can you have an opinion on pirates when there are so many different ways of "pirating"? Your blood can run cold as you hear the terrible "YAARRR" from a bus at Sedina/Latos wormhole. You may find a real nasty guy ambushing you in a wormhole sector, who is only interested in destroying you without prior notice, with his coach on the side giving instructions on sector chat. You may come accross a very amenable pirate at Corvus Hold who politely explains that he will not go after you and that this exceptional favor is due to the poor Itani performances at CtC. Maybe the last one is the most evil way of pirating :)

i am one of those people who PK, and not a true pirate. and you are right, in grey i go for kills, and only kills.

however! most if not all the time people come to a complete stop, i'll stop and fly off. i do not play this game to remove the fun out of others; and quite frankly i don't feel too good when i find out i ruin someone's mission.

most of the traders in grey know me pretty well, they'll either offer to pay, or come to a complete stop and i'll fly off. of course i don't expect every person out there to know this prior, but the -frequent- traders, and mission takers know this who travel in grey.

there is a clear difference from this type of PKer, and the other kind of PKer who -does- take pleasure in removing someone's fun, in an expense of another's.

my favorite aspect of vendetta, is the pvp. it has been for a long time, it's why i'm here.

I've been all of that, currently it seems my circuitry is unhinged a bit and tends to be flakey at best, moving between "it moves, blammo!" towards "oh, sparkly ship, mind if I blow it up?" (both have happened, in the same day ;)

More people got upset (Hello, Aton Cho-bashor ) when I decided that the Edras wormhole was "mine" and started to kill any tradeship that came close, be it NPC or trader. (Careful not to kill the UIT traders, ofc, and to check standings, don't want to get locked out now, do I?)

Made a rather neat profit too, as players tend to have better cargo than NPC's.

However, I no longer spend much time asking somone to drop their cargo, its too easy to just get away, especially for the (albeit not as quickly accelerating) infiniboosting marauders, when you are in a ship that can actually haul the cargo.

Hopefully this will change some now that the larger ships are coming back as usable, we'll see.

Until then, I think my stability will remain questionable.
Jan 27, 2005 Sputnik66 link
yea spider, that is the primary reason why i don't hail with any type of warning. it's too hard to catch an infiniboosting ship.

if they were catchable, actual true pirating might be something to take up.. however as it stand's i'll just stick to my old routine.

Overall I have no problem with Pirates. They are trying to scratch out a living, or looking for excitement in the universe.

There are a couple pirates that I have enough respect for that I've had pleseant conversations with them after they have attempted to or sucessfully pirated me. Heck, I even give them a few thousand credits if I seem them in their off pirating hours, just incase they catch me with my pants down sometime.

However, those that are griefers or just fire first always get some form of resistance from me, usually ending with me escaping in some form and them in a worse condition then when they started. I know in some cases that's all some pirates want, is some action.

Yes there are some out there that give the true pirates a bad name. I for one, can tell and appreciate the difference.
