Dual Universe, a game in developement

This game is a voxel based building game similar to Space Engineers or Minecraft, but with more refined tools than either. The devs have developed an algorithm that keeps the latency for refresh rates on distant structures to less than the latency for internet connections. This means that they have a game that lets the players design and build anything and everything, all in a single shard universe that has no loading screens between areas of gameplay. There is already an active community around this game and the devs are actually considering the input and ideas from the community for several aspects of the gameplay that are not yet finished. This game shows a lot of promise and they are expecting to open a closed alpha sometime early next year, with a semi open Beta sometime later.

Did you get paid to advertise their game here?

Interesting concept, seems like a bit of a pipe dream though. kinda like they took space engineers, made it a little darker, then made claims to specifically fix the performance issues associated with SE. I'll hold out for gameplay footage myself, one that isn't heavily edited as this one is. If Space Engineers taught us anything it's that you are going to need a beast of a computer to even consider this game.

Meanwhile, StarMade is chugging right along. It's not single-universe (you can either play offline, or you can join a server), and it's not quite as pretty, but it's cross platform and you can already build custom ships and stations with AI turrets and moving parts, mine the crust off a planet, and set up factory chains to convert raw materials into parts.

JC Baille, the head developer, has already spent years figuring out the backend stuff so we don't see performance issues like Space Engineers. Expect more info to be released at the gaming event in Germany this week.

I don't see Dual panning out they way they plan. The say right on their website: "a high spec computer of today or a medium spec computer of tomorrow should suffice." That doesn't give me high confidence.

Also on the website: "Dual Universe will be a massively multiplayer game. Using our Robotics and AI experience we have developed our own technology to allow hundreds of thousands (even millions) of players to interact within the same game world. " I gather they are going to be using instancing to make this happen? To be able to build something to SE scale and have thousands of players while not experiencing lag sounds magical. And before someone bring ups EVE, those huge battles in EVE don't take place in real time.

What I love about SE is that i can use it off line. Dual's FAQ says "Dual Universe will be exclusively Online and Massively Multiplayer." Which also means there will be a lot of pretty sand castles being stepped on by meanies. ;-)

Frankly, the game sounds too good to be true.

I tried StarMade but it runs slow as **** on my computer. Which is strange, since Space Engineers runs just fine. I blame java.
