Any Eve traitors among us?

Meh I'm taking a short break from VO and playing some eve, I decided last night that I would delete all my chars Eli, Ezi, METH!, Sieger, Estrian Prosis and start again from scratch when I come back. All of that aside I would be quite interested to know if anyone else plays the epic space game/spreadsheet simulator Eve Online? If so...

What playstyle do you adopt when playing and how is it different from your VO character?

I'm an Orca pilot and hauler working with a small industrial corp. Mostly fulfilling mid-sized hauling contracts and using my Orca as a mobile docking bay and support for mining barges and frigates.

Nov 08, 2016 aaronund link
Not as far as I know, though people have been talking about a new expansion that adds a free to play tier. As for crazy people... I got ganked the other day after someone put a 50mil bounty on me for mining in the same belt as him. I put a 60mil bounty on him and moved on.

@scared star
Do you want me to read a bedtime story to you? No disrespect of course, but you could you please rephrase that question for me?

In case of general question about gameplay:
Eve is a space MMORPG/sandbox with a large focus on Industry and Player vs Player conflict, other notable features are an interactive economy where players create almost everything that is bought or sold.

In case of general question alluding to the in-game story:
I generally don't follow the lore and in-game campaigns. I find it more interesting to just play the game and pick things up as I go.

In case of general question alluding to comparison between Vendetta Online and EVE:
Vendetta Online's PVP is second to none, but EVE's design, PVE, and economy are much better. Vendetta has a much more interesting community which is why I haven't just quit VO and moved on.

Orca = Capital Industrial ship and Hauler, notable for its ability to fly in highsec (Lawful space), it's high armor tank and various cargo holds make it useful as a mobile docking bay for smaller ships. Any mining vessel that joins my fleet gains notable bonuses and safe place to store their ore. Which is the main reason someone would use an Orca. The only annoying thing about it is it's large of turret slots that make it incapable of mining. Luckily the drone bay is enough to store my ECM's and Acolytes.

Hauling contracts = Player paid contracts where someone would pay me a few million isk to move cargo for them.

Mining barge = Smaller than an Orca and are generally used to retrieve large amounts of ore. Retrievers, Coveters, Procurers

Mining frigates = Smaller than Mining barges but with better warp alignment but a weaker armor tank and ore yield. Most people use the Venture to start with and then jump straight to mining barges, carefully avoiding the other mining frigates available. Venture, Prospect, Endurance

Does any of this answer your question?

No thanks! I prefer to fly my own ship instead of watching a beautiful screensaver!

I've always thought it was rude to talk about other spacegames in the VO forums. Sadly the devs don't enforce it. Oh well.

I can't stand spreadsheet games. VO is #1

I used to be a COD zombies fan until VO maybe the devs will add a space zombies mode!

The following is my opinion, only:

Sieger, that's why we have an Off-Topic section. I don't recall the devs ever stating there was anything in that regard to "enforce".

I tried Eve but pulled the "Eject" handle before my Steam 2-hour refund window was up; laugh at this, but it felt too much like cheating. I may give it another go at some point, especially when it becomes free to play. I've read that it's a beautiful game, and I try to be open minded. The ship designs are very well done, and Eve Gunjack is a lot of fun.

Personally, I'd prefer to read ten paragraphs about Eve before reading one paragraph about Star Citizen simply because it's a game that has been around since 2003. Again, my opinion only.

That stated, this is Vendetta's website; it's fine to talk about other space games so long as we're respectful toward Guild. There doesn't need to be one space game to rule them all.

I still routinely run across people on the interwebs that have no idea Vendetta even exists; all the internet people seem to have heard of Eve, Star Citizen, and Elite Dangerous by comparison.

@Sieger
Ever bright you naturally are, you cannot be so dimwitted that you claim simply talking about other games in the VO forums, games that happen to be set in space, should be banned? Maybe I am misreading you. The developers are likely to be reasonable people and I can only assume that Incarnate doesn't shit a proverbial brick at the mere mention of other games, call me presumptuous. I'm also going to assume that YOU Sieger are not petty enough to get upset over the minuscule discussion of a game on the forums.

I haven't even cancelled my subscription.

All of this talk about VO and Eve, and none about Elite? Elite is #1, end of discussion.

It has twitch combat (unlike Eve) AND a very big and complex universe and economy (unlike VO).

The VO community is very interesting, indeed. It's overflowing with people like this:

Get this, you're a lonely capsuleer just starting out, you don't have much in terms of materials, cash, ships, skills, and experience. You either can follow the tutorials blindly which only shows you the core mechanics of what you can do, or you can set off and strike out on your own, but regardless of your initial choice if you ignore the multitude of information out there you will soon find yourself right back where you started. Maybe you have some cash, skills, and a little experience but you've yet to make the climb up the plateau. Do not be discouraged by this particular image, it is to show the unforgiving nature of the game. There are multiple plateaus each with their own set of dangers but all too common with each other. What makes EVE unforgiving is not knowing what may lie ahead. Other capsuleers are your greatest threat and greatest asset.

If Space Quake is what you're after then stay right where you are, but if you want something more, something you can mold into your desires then maybe EVE is worth looking into.

Is it actually playing a game if you just sit there and stare at the skill training timer til it finally runs out?

The ROC simply says this:

You may not:
Advertise products or websites that are not related to Vendetta Online or other Guild Software products.

In this case I don't see the OPs message as being an advertisement. Is this really something people want to argue about?

Back on topic: I was a playtester for Eve - lost interest pretty fast once it went live. I like it here where a talented new player can alter the pecking order.

Eve is a great game if you want to focus on logistics or management. And I don't mean that in an insulting way. I like games that involve logistics. Unfortunately, Eve is significantly less great -- perhaps even completely rubbish -- when it comes to wanting to fly a space fighter. You don't fly your ship in Eve. You select where you want to go from a map or targeting menu, or by clicking on it in space, or sometimes by clicking on it in a mission description or a chat message or something like that. Then your ship flies there, all on its own. You don't get to control it. You can tell your ship to approach a target or to orbit around it at a certain distance. You have a throttle you can use to control how fast you move, and if you want more manual control, there is a way to vaguely steer by double-clicking on space or something (been a while, I don't remember exactly). Combat basically consists of selecting a target and telling the ship to orbit at whatever range you think is optimal for the situation (depends on your weapons, their weapons, etc.). Then while your ship handles that, you fire your weapons (or other devices). There's no aiming; that's all just dice rolls based on the distance, relative tangential velocities, weapon stats, character stats, etc. All you do is click on the icon for the weapon that you want to fire, then you wait for the cooldown to finish so you can click it again. (Or you just set it to auto-fire, if you aren't trying to do anything fancy.)

It does get more involved when you're fighting multiple targets or using a fancy assortment of equipment, and fighting other players does require actual player skill unless there's a large equipment disparity. I didn't play long enough to learn what those skills are, but my few encounters with other hostile humans felt about the same as my first brushes with PVP in VO -- delusions of competence built up after grinding a bunch of bots abruptly shattered with the revelation of my ignorance.

Unlike with VO, losing your ship hurts. Ships and equipment start off more expensive and only get worse. I'm not saying this as a complaint. It's just a difference, which leads to a different attitude toward risk assessment. VO's system works for VO, and Eve's works for Eve.

Also, the leveling system rubs some people the wrong way. It uses a bunch of discrete skills for different things instead of simple levels, and you learn those skills over time. Period. Not by doing things. Not even by being logged in. You just select which of the available skills you want to learn, load them into a queue, and click start. From then on, you slowly learn those skills, even while not logged in. There is very little you can do to speed the process up, either. Your character does have inherent stats (intelligence, memory, willpower, maybe others) that impact how fast you learn certain skills, so you can spec the character for the stuff you want to learn. You can also buy implants that boost those stats a little. All in all, though, that only makes a small impact. The other thing you can do is use specialized alts, because the more skills a character has, the slower they learn new ones. But yeah, you can't really play "harder" to level up faster, and that pisses some people off. Others like it, since it means people with more time to burn don't get as much advantage. Just depends who you ask.

I played Eve for a few months, and then I came back to it a year later and played a few more months, and I haven't touched it since. But I don't have any hostility toward it. I don't feel like I wasted my time or anything. I had fun, in fact, especially in the beginning. Just not enough fun over the long run to stick around and keep playing it when there are other games and activities that I enjoy more. Other people do find enough fun to keep playing. People are different.

I play Vendetta Online for the combat and community which EVE lacks.

I play EVE for the industry, ships, and the world which Vendetta Online lacks.

I will play Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous when I get tired of flicking the bean and reading the VO forums. That being said... What sort of ships did you fly?

yeah i understand, i check some of it out on youtube and i am complete confused i looked that the skills or what ever it was, too many stuff to keep and i on, i stay with vo lol

It's not that bad when you get used to it, but VO is where all the cool kids hang out.

I played EvE before it was cool...

Lol, ok, only EvE players think it's cool but yeah, I was in the beta for it too. It just never gripped me at all, but then again I guess I'm not one for "management" type games. As I am getting older and my reflexes are slowing down (not because of age mind you, that is more due to an increase in consumption :)) I have actually been thinking about giving it another go. I guess a lot has changed since the beta, although from what I can see from YouTube vids the core gameplay does remain.

Anyway, you might be getting shot by me there too soon... (and that's not a tm, I have LOTS of contacts in the EvE world) :D
