Bad IceYo! Bad!

so, I'm sitting with my bus in sector 1 at the coords of (344.30, -21.65, -68.94) and I was admiring the IceYos for a while. when I turned ever so slightly, the bump maps on the Yos disappeared. So I looked in the directx8.log and found nothing, and no abnormal messages in errors.log nothing in waverror.log and a bunch of:
[04/03/04 23:13:59] gdinput.cpp(546) : or Error (DIERR_READONLY): The specified property cannot be changed.

in the dinput.log, though with various dates on them.
My system is a PIII at 600Mhz with 320MB RAM and a GeForce FX 5200 running Windows XP Professional and DirectX 9.0b, and I'm using latest drivers from nVidia(released April's fools, haha)

and...yeah, the bug isn't really annoying, but it's a bug nonetheless.

I think nvidia forgot how to make robust drivers.

what, you think ATI/Apple does any better? 0.o

Heh, no I don't. I think maybe everyone is stealing each other's drivers so all the bugs get stolen too. ;)

bleh, it happens with the other non-shiplike objects as well when you get close and move around :/

rglow works better with the new nVidia drivers though..

I got the same bug, the bump maps disappeared on the ice riods in s1 at certain angles... ONLY when I have AntiAlasing on (I tested on AA on 4x...) If I kept the same angle (when the bump maps disappear) and disable AA, the bump maps come back. I don't have any bump maps disappearing when AA is disabled.

Edit:

FX5900, Driver 56.72

How about 2x AA? How about driver-forced 8xAA?
Apr 20, 2004 HumpyThePenguin link
Mine is no AA, and sometimes every texture turns black in 7 if I work my angles right

could it have something to do with the level of detail you have set for your graphics? I noticed that when changing from the lower end of detail to the top end of detailed graphics the roids, ect become more complex in shape and number of angles, ect

Nah, I've noticed it on all settings, and I really don't like super low quality textures :/

Testing Results:

AA off: no bugs as of yet
AA 2x: Ive seen the bumpmapping disappear, but its much harder to 'trigger' the bug in 2x
AA 3x: Same as 2x, but it gets slightly easier to find a place where the bump maps disappear.
AA 4x: Same as above, except even more bumpmaps disappear.

Details about bug:

When you hit a certain 'spot' all the bump maps disappear, its not just the roid next to you, it disappears on all visble textures that use bump mapping (I haven't found a spot where the station was visable yet).

Notes:
Testing was done in s1, near the station/ice crystals
All AA changes where done inside Vendetta.
Video Card Used was the eVga Geforce FX5900 128meg; Driver 56.72
Image Quality was on 'Quality'
All attempts to force AA settings in Driver Control Panel Failed. So I could not test 8x AA.

I have some screenies... if you want 1... I just need a place to host it, or an e-mail to e-mail it to.

Edit: fixed a spelling error

ok, so... whats up? need any more data?

Bump, same specs as above.

Ive been able to reproduce the bugs in s1 and s6 :).

So avoid s1 during E3 :P. In s6 it took me a good 10 - 15 minutes and I could only reproduce it when I was about 3meters away from an asteriod....

Im going to test it with the 60.72 drivers next. (which is hopefully the drivers they use during E3... but then again, the 6800 is a totally different card :P)

Edit: Reproduced a good 200 meters away from the Ice... s6 again
