Adv Combat Mission does not work

Apr 28, 2004 Starfisher link
Once I reached combat level 4, I took the Adv Combat Mission from the sector 4 station (Kill ten infiltrator bots). I made my way to s15, where I was promptly annihilated in a flurry of tachyons. I was told I had only killed 0 bots and needed to kill 10 to complete the mission. So I killed ten infiltrator bots without docking or dying, and the mission did not complete. I'm going to go kill one or two then die and see what it says; appears to not be counting kills properly.

its not only infiltrators, it either doesn't count droneII kills in adv train mission

Frankly, the Adv. combat missions are too hell for difficult even if you could kill the defender bots.. *cough*
I mean, 10 defenders + assaults without repairs? In a cent? That just won't work...

It's hard only if you try like you're fighting traditional vendetta bots. The new ones are both harder and easier... the infiltrators don't ever seem to do anything buy fly in a lazy straight line, and if you keep an eye on your radar you can usually evade the assaults. Once they lock on, a heads up fight is death in a light/light/ion centurion... but you can usually lose them in the asteroids.

What I did to complete the mission was fly 1km above the asteroid halo looking for infils. When I found one, I would wait till it was away from assaults, then get right behind it and take it down. Whole mission probably took about half an hour doing it that way, and evading assaults when they locked on.

So it's doable... but the game doesn't recognize it as such. And once you reach level 4 you can't take basic combat missions again, so you can't effectively level your combat skills any further.

Another problem with the system is that as it curently stands, you can stay in basic combat training forever (or at least for a very long time) getting your 1000xp bonuses for every 5 bots you kill, as long as you do not level up. You can even terminate the mission and start the count again from 0. This means that people who level up quickly have to go fighting sentry or infiltrator bots in centurions, while people who stay at level 2 and bot can gain xp quickkly endlesly killing drone I and IIs, and then jump straight to high combat levels and god ships.

I think the bassic combat training should probably stay on for maybe another level, but then should stop awarding XP bonuses for anyone whose XP (NOT license level, simply XP value) is high enough for lvl 5/6 or so.

The mission computer actualy tells you that you will no longer be awarded a bonus for killind class I drones, but for some reason (a feature?) you still get the bonus.

Some players are stuck with crappy ships and weapons now because they've progressed through the regular combat missions quickly by ending the mission every time a new license was announced, and now they can't go back because this buggy advanced combat mission is forced upon 'em. This is especially true for some of the players who started this morning when players were forced to log off in order for the servers to be reset. Because they can't go back to the regular combat missions, it's impossible for these players to get bonus points in botting due to the mission bot not counting each kill in the advanced missions... thus requiring probably at least a month's worth of botting just to get up to the next level without bonuses.

Aside from the fact that the advanced combat missions are bugged, I think it should only be offered when you reach a certain license/skill level... rather than by the number of regular combat missions you completed. 'Cause right now, with the weapons and ships that are provided, it's really hard to take out some of those dual tachyon vulture NCPs and flechette wraith NPCs in order to pass the advanced combat mission. It just seems way too early.

As a more dramatically different suggestion, obstacle courses might be a better solution for certification rather than botting. A lot of people want to get right into the game and start roleplaying. They don't want to spend months botting just to get a good ship. Of course that doesn't automatically mean that players will have access to every ship and weapon. Licensing will still be there, but instead in the form of an obstacle course. Depending on how good the player does in time/score, they will be offered access to different ships/weapons if they pass the obstacle course successfully. The option to redo tests is a possibility, for those dissatisfied with their results and want to try again. This will not only ensure that the player is indeed certified to handle the equipment, it'll also save many wasted hours of dull botting.
