Semi-fix to OS X Slowage

It's been confirmed by numerous reports that OS X 10.3.4 breaks nVidia drivers further, specifically of the 12-inch PowerBook and possibly other Macs. Many users with the FX Go5200 and FX 5200 Ultra graphics cards have experienced a drastic framerate drop in various games. It's especially noticeable for any game that uses the UT2K3 engine (XIII, Raven Shield, Tron 2.0, etc.), but is not limited to that.

For example a few World of Warcraft beta testers reported the same problem. The devs at Blizzard called up Apple for a temporary 12-inch PowerBook test machine and had since been able to duplicate the problem. It is in fact with OS X 10.3.4. So obviously it affects other games as well. I've personally noticed this same problem occuring with Vendetta, in addition to the "memory leak" bug for the OS X client.

It's possible that it may be affecting ATI users as well, but AFAIK it is most noticeable with 12-inch PowerBooks containing the nVidia FX Go5200. So what does this mean for Vendetta? Well, add the framerate bug to the current version and multiply it by two. That's how Vendetta plays like for my setup right now. I've also lost over 10-15 average frames for my copy of UT2K3.

What can be done to fix it? Oddly enough you're supposed to avoid putting your Mac to sleep. If you want to be sure that you'll get the best performance, do a fresh restart before playing any games. That seems to be the only way to get your performance back. So if anyone else is having any trouble with Vendetta, give this a try until Apple can get their act together and release a fix.

I also urge the devs to use their ADC account (if they have one) to report this bug via the Bug Reporter and to request some additional test machines (12-inch PowerBook) if they capable of doing so. Let them know that some testers with this particular setup are currently having issues with the game and OS X 10.3.4. The more they hear about this the more they'll be pressured to fix it.

I dunno....might just be sucky video drivers combined with a OS that's got buggy graphics interfaces. Dunno.

We're already in contact with Apple to help fix the mac slowness.

I've been playing Vendetta only with all programs off and only after a reboot. No change in framerates. I have a 1Ghz iMac with 17" plasma and GeForce4 MX (64).

I still get drastic framerate loss facing stations and roids. Hope the work with Apple corrects it...

Thanks, Ray.

p.s. 10.3.4, also
