Roll rate Mouselook vs Joystick

Jul 08, 2004 Thanquol link
I don't know if this is a bug or a feature but when I compare the roll rates from the same ship while using mouse look or joystick there is a big differance, with the joystick controles giving the biggest roll speed. I use the same keys while rolling. It is not just on my G4 Mac but also on my brothers iMac and iBook. I don't know if this a Mac only thing, if so please move me to the Mac part.

ok, how exactly did you do the conparison so I can duplicate it here.
Did you use q and e to roll in both mouselook and joystick mode? Or did you use q/e for mouselook and AnalogRoll for the joystick?
All the controls are clamped to the max values so maybe one of the controls isn't maxing out it's input but I wouldn't know without more info.

Both times I used the q and e keys.

Ray, just do a simple test. Hit "q" in joystick mode, then go to mouselook mode and try it. Joystick gets 2x the roll speed.

I wasn't too happy with the keyboard and mouse roll rate either. So I made an alias to nearly double it. I tweaked the roll value until I got one I liked. I got practically no help in creating the alias, so I'm a little reluctant to share it. Believe me it's not as easy as you think. Anyway, here are my observations.

Making the roll rate value too high actually reduces your ability to dodge and screws up your aiming. When you strafe left or right while rolling quickly, you give less time for your ship to speed up in the strafing directions. It'll eventually get to the point where your ship does nothing but rotate, even while dodging.

Also, your aiming gets screwed up. If you roll too fast you give little time for your reticule to recover. So having a high roll rate on a Ragnarok would make your crosshairs fly all over the place. Since joystick and keyboard users aren't plagued by the wobble effect, this isn't an issue for them.

That doesn't mean that increasing the roll rate is a bad thing, however. I found a sweet spot that is better than the default, but not too fast as to make you a target. If you add a roll value of 500 to the default rotateCW/CCW, it's just right. The ability to dodge and aim are optimal with most ships at this value.

If anyone tried to withold it from you, you'd get pretty mad. Anyways, Eldrad has a bind for this, I'm sure he'd be nice enough to share it if you'd ask him. Either way, this should be fixed for the next client release.

Leave it to AlienB to flame up yet another post. I figured out the alias myself because either a) nobody knew how or b) the responses I got for help were vague or unhelpful. In any case I'm not obligated to post instructions on how to do it, especially in your presence with such a blatant display of poor attitude.

I'm sure the devs already know about it. If not I'll happily e-mail them the aliases on request. However, I don't feel that this either an exploit or a bug. It's more of an undocumented feature that puts aiming and maneuverability up to par with joystick players, who have a distinct advantage over mouse players.

I wasn't happy with the default roll rate so I took the time to do something about it. That's all. I'm not here to hinder the beta testing process or brag about having l33t aliases. I just wanted to share some information and offer my opinion on the topic. Take it for what it's worth.

ok, I'll see what's going on and work on it.

Ah yes. it is different. It's supposed to be the same. The mousemode one is supposed to be faster like the joystick mode one.

Ok.
With mouselook off, roll speed is equal to the maximum roll speed of the ship/engine.
With mouselook on, roll is emulated with a control system and doesn't know exactly how fast the ship can really roll so it picks a general roll speed that won't make any ships freak out. I increased the rollspeed of mouselook mode a little but it can't always be exactly the same as non-mouselook mode.
