Storm Sector, defbots, and crash

Sep 03, 2004 roguelazer link
I was in Geira Rutilus I8, in a storm. I thought it was weird that I was in the storm, because there were no bots or roids there, but I flew to the exit anyway. I was being persued by a large serco strikeforce at the time, so I opened my navscreen to preplot a course out of there. However, when I pressed n the game crashed to desktop. I submitted a bugreport, but I'm giving this as a warning to other players.

other people have reported the same thing. I tried it and didn't have a problem.
when you jumped into the storm sector, what sector did you have selected in the nav menu?

No idea.

I noticed that the nav menue doesn't always work. If I select a waypoint in another system, sometimes JUMP is not enable. If a select a local target, it works.

Right. The Jump button works the same as it does before, even though jumping doesn't work quite the same as it did before... you're meant to use Activate to do multi-segment jumps. It should enable the jump button in that situation.

This is the only time I've had a crash with the nav window. I was crossing Betheshee and not with a multi-leg course. Got caught in a storm with no bots. Hit "n", immediate crash. Restarted, the ship had continued to fly, I wound up some 12k away from the exit point. I did this three times. Then I flew to the exit point and "activate" warped me to my destination properly. I went looking for the storm again to reproduce this, but I could not find the storm. (now there's a new one, not being able to find a storm :) )

Ok, got it sussed. the storm that's causing the problem is in betheshee L-7. It's a star. And it's all really quite pretty.

Had the same problem as "Mariner" did, but in the Jallik System. I was not able to determine what sector The storm was in, but I was headed to Jallik D-4.

In other storm news, a day or two after the release of the latest version, I was trying to do a mission, and encountered storms in 8 out of nine jumps. No, not the same storm either. Too damned many, by any measure.

Guys, I hate to say it, but isn't it time to dump the storms? It was a good idea, but
for some reason it causes too many problems. The number of storms is way out of proportion. Octree warnings. Stuck in loading screen. And now game crashes.
I think it's time to cut your losses, dump the storms and work on improving the
mission/levelling up process which is (probably) the biggest stumbling block to the game's success.

Before scrapping anything, Id Wait until more players test Vendetta and we get a clearer image of what a real storm can do in a more popluated universe.

As for hitting 8 storms out of 9 jumps... well, it must be really bad luck.

We have had a LOT of problems with storms with only 4 or 5 players on. More people equals MORE problems.

This storm is the only one with a problem. And the storms aren't out of proportion- I usually get one for every 3 systems.

I hardly ever hit storms. I use non-roid sectors for my jump points and only enter roid sectors when that is my destination. When I do hit a storm, I stay in that sector till my business is done then leave.

Of course, when there is a report of a problem with a storm and I go to check it out, then I'm in and out of storms for hours.
