Fnugget: Ray is asking where in the real world you reside.

Ah, uhhh, even he didn't check back to correct me.
Oklahoma. I'm on a campus LAN. As in, I'm in college.

The bug still exists. i flew at 30,000m/s this time and got to 5million meters away from a wormhole. It just, happens.

Aha! I think the culprit is your college LAN.

Well, i get to screw up may game, then let people watch me speed away at 30,000m/s. how cool is that!?

Sorry, I meant to explain this more carefully but I got called away.

So yes, we should probably call this thread "Insane glitch caused by college LAN" instead.

Colleges and universities have been using packet shaping routers to manage network traffic. For instance, packets which make up MP3s are very bandwidth intensive. These kinds of files can be identified and given a lower priority than academic pursuits (library servers, websites, etc). Purportedly this gives everyone equal access (preventing you from controlling empires at the expense of the Poindexter down the hall), but it also slows down the exchange of copyrighted material and other naughtiness.

Do an internet search for "packet shaping".

Now, aren't you sorry you maligned Vendetta so? tch tch tch!

Without knowing the VO network protocol I can not grasp the logic in this traffic shaping explanation. Network congestion should cause some jitter and lag but hardly the described symptoms? Besides, if bystanding player can witness this anomaly then it is (also) the VO server that gets confused, either from faulty client data or some internal glitch. Neither of which should be happening.

Like I said, something happens and the client and server seem to de-sync. It then tries to put me in the right place, but it keeps messing up. Then, maybe it gives up. Eventually I return to where I was, and it tries to compensate for all the time that was passed. Who knows.
And I can't change thread names.

Fnugget: Yes,thats a pretty good description of what is probably going on. Assuming your LAN has packet-shaping software, things are going along fine until somebody else on the LAN needs to check their email, school server, academic website, or whatever else your system administrator feels is a high priority. The packet-shaper then (like a traffic cop)slows or halts what you are doing to make way for the higher-priority activity. Meanwhile, VO is suddenly getting no info from you and is valiantly trying to update your position based on whatever it knows about your speed, heading, etc.. If it happens for just a moment, it's no big thing. If it happens for longer, it's a mess.

This is not a problem peculiar to VO. See: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark%2C6434298

Yeah, I had something similar happen to me last week. Got launched about 50km from the wormhole, and when I tried to talk to the channel, I got messages about how I had to wait 1.80e2 seconds between messages. My ping also skyrocketed into the 10-20 second range. So yeah, college LAN + QoS traffic shaper is bad news. Thankfully, it doesn't happen too often. I think the whole LAN was having issues, everyone was reporting 'net connection problems, AIM dropping, etc

I GET AIM DROPS TOO! where is you?
