There should be modules for purchase that upgrade a ship's systems. For instance...

auto-repair: automatically repairs ship when docked at station
auto-load: automatically loads cargo when docked at station
cargo detector: determining if a ship has cargo should be impossible without this. This should be a banned item. A station becomes hostile if it detects it on your ship.
armor conversion: turns 2 cargo bays into 1000 more hull points
cargo conversion: turns 2000 hull points into 1 cargo bay
weapons conversion: turns all cargo bays into 1 weapons bay (1-2 cargo bays become small weapon, anything more and it becomes a large)
battery charger: turns motion into battery power, at the expense of slowing your speed

other modules could be done as well.

Well, as you might imagine this isn't the first 'toys' thread. It's not even the most extensive list. But it is does have some good ideas on it which is unusual for a newbie, and it even has at least one original idea on it which is something I haven't seen in a post in a very long time.

So while I'm going to continue to play devil's advocate and tear your ideas apart, I want you to understand that my respect for your opinions just went up a notch or two. :)

1) I'm torn between saying that would be pretty useless and that would be too powerful. On the one hand, for a fighter, you are only saving a few 10's of credits. On the other hand, on a ship with 60k hull points, such a feature could make things a little too cheap. I'm more in favor of ideas that cheapen the cost of repair rather than elimenate it entirely, or allow you to pay for a certain ammount of repairs ahead of time.

2) That superficially sounds good right now, but it could actually be pretty frustrating if you have a warehouse full of cargo around and are trying to load a particular one. Keep in mind that when the system becomes dynamic it may be important to store cargo for selling later when the price changes.

3) Agreed, though I'd like to modify that only some stations, and only if you don't have a license to own the item (ei you are a police officer and its your job to prevent smuggling.) I tend to just call this item a 'scanner' and assume that it can do other nifty things depending on the quality of the scanner like tell how many hull points you have left.

4) That's an insanely cheap rate for buying hull points. Anyone want to see a Prom with 33k hull? In general, turning cargo into usable things is more problematic than turning usuable things into cargo. If you aren't going to use the weapon as a trade ship you really aren't giving up anything by doing this.

5) That's not quite as insane as the above suggestion, and might even be worth trying out. There might need to be a limit though, like you can sacrifice no more than 50% of your hull.

6) At first I thought you were suggesting something really silly, but then I realized you actually had a pretty good thought. It might not be so bad to exchange _ALL_ bays for _1_ weapon slot no matter how many bays you had. It reminds me of an idea I had along time ago called 'Space Superiority Conversion' which exchanged _ALL_ cargo bays for 10% more hull and 10% better max speed.

7) This is your original thought. I don't think anyone has thought of a gizmo that exchanged speed for power. Congradulations, you just added something to my wish list of gizmos. This would be incredibly cool and properly done would be very balanced. Basically you are modifying the way the engine works, and as long as that modification is limited you could generate new slightly more expensive more specialized batteries - ideally at the cost of using up one of your limited 'equipment slots' and forgoing say better radar or some other gizmo.

Yes, now that you can pick up the -1 Worn Leather Helms from the robo-orcs, I was lamenting the lack of red and blue potions for health and mana boosts while you're out gaining experience.

/me is confused... Actually, I'd love to see an auto-repair module. I'm assuming what he means is that you still pay the same price to repair, this just does it automatically. I love the auto-refuel outfit in EVN... /me doesn't get what a1k0n said...

I'm only a noob to vendetta, not space trading games.

the auto repair does not change the cost of repair, just makes it so you don't have to think about it.

The auto load should be configurable. Set it with a list of what you want to trade, and it'll max out on the first one. Now when you make that 4 stop trade route, where you've purchased everything in advance, you can just land and takeoff for each.

the conversions should be 1) irreversible 2) very expensive creditwise 3) very expensive conversionwise

Along the lines of the "original thought" (which I like too, btw)...

There could be several methods of converting one element of balance to another, many with plausible explanations that would make them an interesting part of an MMORPG.

For example:

1) A super-thruster that boosted your maximum turbo speed by 50%, but slowly (or maybe rapidly) damaged your hull while it did it.

2) An "R-2" unit (minus the trademark infringement :) that could repair your hull slowly at the cost of energy, but that couldn't work during a turbo. Also, the rate of repair could be inverse to your speed (dead stop = faster repair, full "impulse" = slow repair)

3) Along the lines of #1, a weapon super-charger that damaged you also due to excessive energy build-up. This could be a more effective "charge cannon"... the better weapon could be balanced by risk of use. If you let the cannon charge too much (i.e., you drain all of your energy) that it discharged and damages your own hull in the process.

4) Increasing your maximum speed by reserving energy for the engines. In other words, your battery will only charge to 50% capacity while enabled.

5) Increasing total speed by 10% if all weapon groups are disabled (i.e., weapons charged down, power re-directed to engines).

6) #5, but power re-directed to the hull.

... and so on and so on...

Pyro: a1k0n is refering to Diablo specificaly, and one of the sacred cows of CRPG's generally. That is that there are relatively easy to kill NPC's which when killed drop behind a small ammount of treasure to help the neophyte warrior get together the weapons he needs to begin the epic quest.

I think a1k0n is generally amused by the fact that Vendetta has given in to that precepts of that sacred cow, and it may be that he is hinting about a semi-perverse desire to have NPC's drop the eventual successor of the 'power-up' upon occassion.

Oh... I thought he was being sarcastic... Mmm... Cow level... Mmm... Cow level with level 99 necromancer using corpse explosion and animate dead (or whatever it is), plus all the relevant passive skills... I've never gotten about level 20 or 30, but I've seen it... Mmm... Carnage... Maybe they could drop chunks of their hull (like what you see currently), and with a certain outfit you could pick them up and use them to repair your hull...

I hate to diverge, but what the hell did a1k0n's post have to do with anything???

I interpreted a1k0n's comment along these lines:

"Well, yeah, while we're at it why don't we just change the game into something that you've already played and become bored with?"

Personally I don't care for any of phayd's suggestions at all!
Let me explain...
At first I didn't much care for the changes to the station operations (mostly the manual cargo/weapon loading), but now that I'm almost used to it, I like the 'realism' of it.
If anything, I'd actually like to see a small fee imposed to equip gear and load cargo except in your own home sector(s).

I'd also like to see some type of reminder display when l try to leave a station before equipping gear / loading cargo that I just purchased, but only if I just purchased it. If I already dismissed the reminder, I don't want to see it again. Alternatively it could have a little checkbox that can be unchecked somewhere to turn it off.

My suggestions would be purchases. The auto-loader would not be free. Think of a robot fork-lift that does your bidding.

Who's A1k0n? :P
May 01, 2003 a1k0n link
haha. I wasn't referring to Diablo, specifically. Just about every RPG I've ever played in my life (text-based and graphical) has had blue and red potions (or they'd be different shades of blue and red, like cyan and vermillion, or something, where darker shades were more potent) and they always have had the same effect.

I was just pointing out, in metaphor, the analogs within our game to most other RPGs and what was missing if we were to round out the "typical RPG model". Specifically, one-time-use quick repair parts and charge boosts. And NPCs dropping special weapons and armor, yes.

Anyway, I wasn't speaking for or against it. I just think it's very interesting.

I liked the idea of the auto repair system. But I would not use energy as the exclusive means to a repair. I would make the sugestion that since your repairing matter with matter, you nead a source of material. I would propose that the AR system would not only take energy but also cargo. So really you sacrifice prophet for survivability.

I like text based games, cough___THGTTG___cough, no potions, if you get far enough (improbability generator far) the only way to die is to kill your self or to appear inside your own head, die as in lose

Lets not make this "Ever Quest 3; In space!"?

Nah, it'll be Dance Dance Space Bass Fishing 2004. :P Actually, armor repair bots would be interesting... They'd work very slowly (100 armor/minute?) of course...
