Limit Access to Secret Sectors

May 06, 2003 Tempest link
Those of us who have been to the secret sectors agree that they're cool and lucrative. However, it's gotten to a point where players can rapidly earn huge sums of money, and outfitting yourself with top of the line ships from all nations is no challenge. This is a major balance issue.
However the answer is built right into the Vendetta storyline: Unstable wormholes. By making access to the hidden sectors limited to certain times, a player couldn't always count on a quick fortune or a replacement Valk. We would still get all the benefits of the hidden sectors, just not all the time. And if you became trapped in a hidden sector, you would be stuck for a span of time until the wormhole phased in again, so making those lucrative 14/15 trade runs would be a gamble with real consequences. Good idea? Bad idea?

It raises the possibility that to be financially competitive you have to be online all the time.

I don't take the current economic state to be anywhere near final.

I would wager that the profit margins are currently about 10 to 20 times what they are going to be in a "finished" version, why.. for 1 simple reason. they want us to have LOTS of money.. so we can buy LOTS of gizmos/ships/weps etc so we can test them.

I imagine that the profits will go down,, or perhaps the ships hulls/weapons/etc will go up in price by a LOT.

I like the idea of a wormhole opening and closing at certain times. Kind of like the tides of an ocean. It would definitely prevent people from gaining insane amounts of money, or constantly dying and rebuying other nation ships (making them more rare). Of course of a wormhole closes with people still inside that hidden sector, they should still be able to get out. It would be a one-way sorta thing. We don't want half the players being trapped in s15 for hours.

I think at present there is no point in it. In the future you will probably see such wormholes appearing at random times as shortcuts between two distant places on the map (for instance between 7 and 13). I think it would be a bad decision to have wormholes leading to dead ends be unstable.

There really isn't a point to it yet. Once we have collections of secret sectors with multiple ways in (and interconnects in between sectors), then perhaps adding dynamic wormholes that act as shortcuts would be worthwile.

Is there any way to make wormholes move? Any reason to?

Khral, it's funny cause I had the same idea when Tempest and I were discussing this a couple days ago...
