n00b status

May 13, 2003 Suicidal Lemming link
Currently if there was a sudden rush of n00bs, more then 50% of them would leave because of n00b killers, and here is a very simple solution to that

Give a new account a status of being n00b.
Details:
A n00b account can NOT kill red\blue\gold bots
A n00b account can NOT capture a flag, or steal one.
A n00b account can NOT be harmed by players
A n00b account can only kill bots
A n00b account can be killed by bots, even if they are nation owned.
A n00b account lasts for 5 hours, this time does not count for time that the account does not have an activa character playing
A n00b account is not character specific, if i play for 5 hours on one character, then make a new character, that character will not be proteceted.

I might of left something out, not sure.

Well, I'm going to try not to whine this time. :)

I agree with your post to some extent. But I think doing that would be unnecessary if they would make more nation-only sectors. That way it would give n00bs a safe place to trade and kill easy bots w/o having to go into hostile territory. If "Nations" are a few more sectors deep, the n00b killers would be a few jump points away from landing to repair, and that would make n00b killing much more difficult. However, I think the cargo trading in those sectors should be less profitable than trading to dangerous sectors. I don't mean to suggest pushing the flag further back in Nation territory though. ;)

Yes, but more nation only sectors the less places a n00b can go, 2 3rds of the map will be undockable, they won't realise that, they would most likely want to explore around, look around in the secret sectors (14-17). It won't help very much if they are blown to bits, and if they wanted to experiment a trade route safely? Yah, good luck.

I just meant like maybe 2 more sectors per nation (new ones).

So take gold for instance: (I'm using x and y to symbolize new sectors).

s6 <-> s3
s6 <-> sx
s6 <-> sy
s3 <-> sx
s3 <-> sy

Having a few more home sectors would be nice, so the cautions n00b could trade from s3 to sx or sy and if they want to explore they can leave s6 to s10 or s11 and start really playing the game. But I doubt many n00b killers will want to hang in s3 or sx/sy because they are 2 jumps from a "land-able" base. Since the sectors are colored in the NAV map, n00bs should be able to figure out that those are nation-only sectors.

Doing this would also make leaving s6 more of an adventure, and it's implied that with leaving s6 there is more risk and more $$$.

Rough map, N equals n00b sector, notice how to branchs off from only 1 sector =)

Yeah, that would be just as cool.

Yeah, I requested the same thing SL did. One way to protect n00bs in those "N" sectors would be to prevent people of other nations to jump into that sector. So only players of that nation of that home sector can. But the tricky part is to prevent flag cappers from jumping in there too, so they can hold it in and wait for enemy players to get bored and leave as they wait outside the n00b wormhole (since they can't get in). Tricky.

that exploit is easy to fix Arolte. They've already got a flag for you to be carrying the flag. Only allow those who don't have the flag to go through the gate.

Also. 5 hours is WAYYYY too short of a period of time to be a "newb". I'd say more like 24 hours and THEN that time period only starts when they leave 6. IE the first time you jump out of 6, it says "Warning by doing this, you will lose your new player protections after 24 hours. Are you SURE you want to jump?"

This seems like a big hack to fix what is hopefully a short term problem. I think technocrat is closer to the final solution, and would expect to see defence bots and defence turrets (and maybe even defence capital ships) reappear in the home sectors in the near to mid-term.

At some point the devs will probably want to implement the mid-range jumps, and I would expect home sectors to be among the first new clusters of intra-system sectors.

Listen, people like icarus will not stop killing everyone, people like leathal won't stop being idiots. They don't care if they make they make n00bs not play, no n00bs = no game.
