I like capital ships, but this thread needs a better title.

I dont think that Connies would crash the economy, with active economy stations would have to become smart , i.e. they would no longer buy any quantity at the same price. What I mean is f they need 1k of something they will pay 2000cr per cu. But if you bring 20k, they will refuse to buy it at that price. Unlike now where all you have to do is stock before selling, That should no longer work

Ok, so here's the thing with huge cargo capacities and economy crashing. Some things will always be bought in large quantities, such as common ores, some in more limited quantities, such as rarer ores, and some will always be in small quantities, such as expensive specialized parts.

It wouldn't be profitable to buy/mine and sell common ores in a small ship, if you can do it in a huge one. It also wouldn't make sense as a station owner to buy these things in small quantities, since you may be able to negotiate a slightly better per unit price from a huge shipment. So ores that are commonly bought in bulk will be shipped in bulk transports (capital ships). Bulk transports also may move smaller quantities of very large items, such as complete ships. It's like when you see a semi truck that says Wal-Mart on it, you know it's got a crapload of food and electronics for probably one store. On the other hand, the trucks that carry a dozen or less whole cars are just as big. You also may, if you have a large cargo hold, transport many different things at once, to many different destinations. This would mean a lot of travel, though, and a lot of time managing what's in your hold.

Mid-sized transports are more likely to carry somewhat bulky parts to be assembled at a station. There probably won't be enough of these at a time to fill a capital ship, and that captain would have to find other things to carry. There will be a niche to be filled by mid-sized transport ships.

Small transport ships would carry rarer and very small things. Say a station wants three of super-cool item A, and to get it requires taking a somewhat hazardous route. You'd want a small fast transport ship to go get them. Also, the black market will utilize quite a lot of small, inconspicuous, ordinary ships. This would be a big profit area for small ship captains.

The reason people are so freaked out that having a huge transport ship will crash the economy, is that currently there's not much meaning to any cargo. With pretty much anything, you go and fill your cargo bay, and dump it somewhere else. With more equipment options, and a real economy that means finite numbers of stuff, this won't be a problem, since you won't be able to fill a huge hold with anything you choose.

Thankyou, for saying that.

No problem, Bob.
