True neutral "Nation"

May 19, 2003 Buckaroo link
Hi,

I've got a suggestion - add a fourth "nation", with should should be different from red/blue/gold in the following aspects:

- A player of this "grey" nation wouldn't be invulnerable from his peers - a "grey" nation player could destroy another "grey" one, if he wants.

- Due to the lack of nation status (and the vulerability mentioned above), "grey" only should be able to buy the best ships & weapons.

This would make it possible to play some interesting roles:

- Pirates who pirate *every* nation
- Gangs of mobster fighting against other "grey" mobster. Of course, you also could play figh for leadership in your gang
- Mercernaries offering people of *every* nation (red/blue/gold) assistance - for a certian fee, of course.
- Protectors: if I don't like the behavour of one of my nation's peers - for example, newbie killing - I'm unable to do anything about it. I cannot help the hapless newbie (never mind that he isn't a member of my nation), because the rogue pilot is invulnerable from my shots.

Generally, people playing pirates should be a member of this nation - I'm quite fed up with people hating one nation, just because there's a pirate or rogue pilot in it.

What do you think about this?

Buckaroo: The current system is rather inflexible because ideas like reputation which will be very important in the final game are not yet implemented. In the final game, the devs have stated that it will be possible to modify your reputation through your behavior such that in effect you change factions, or presumably are left with no factional alliegance at all. There also appears to be room for 'factions within factions'. So in fact, the concept of 'nations' as we know it is eventually going away, and therefore so is the need for a 'fourth nation'.

Celebrim: Ah, I guess you're talking about clans - indeed, this would be a wonderful idea :-)

But I'm not sure if the reputation thing is a good idea - how do you objectively measure reputation?

I fear that - if there's not a 100% objective method to raise or lower your reputation - there will be a *lot* of discussions and whining by players who complain that their "bad" reputation is undeserved:

"The n00b shot at me first!"

"I've never done any pirating!"

etc.

Devs have stated there will be 3 nations only and only 3 nations will forever exist...

Listen! Vendetta will eventually support subdivisions, guilds, factions, etc. in the final version. When guilds are officially supported and everyone forms their own little squadron or clan or whatever, I think it'll feel like there'll be more nations. Give it some time to develop. Maybe they'll have FF off per guild, instead of being on one big team. Think of it has having a large number of combinations from three main races.

It'd be more likely that FF would be enabled (as in you CAN shoot friendlies) for everyone. After all, look at the current nuke exploits. Just shoot a nuke at a capper on your team and have them fly into it. They are unharmed, but all their attackers are heavily damaged or destroyed.
