Capacitors

A capacitor is like a battery, in the way that it stores electricity for later use. However, unlike a battery, a capacitor releases all of it's energy as fast as it can, while a battery has a steady drain.

I figure that capacitors should be a buyable item which can be charged up, then used to release all the stored energy in a gun. The shot could fly up to 2x the speed of a normal shot and do 2x the damage. However, if you fire charged rounds from normal guns, they would burn out. Fast. This would make them useless, or maybe even dangerus to fire. but hte charged cannon would have an advantage. It would be able to fire overcharged rounds as many times as you want. On top of it's normaly charged rounds.

Also, it could be used for turboing. Giving you maybe a 10 second turbo, but too many overcharge turbos would burn out your engine, allowing you to fly at 50% to 75% normal speed without turboing.

This would also make the empty space in the "repairs" tab usefull. Need to repair a burned out tach cannon? Half the price of a new one or something.

What's the main purpose of this? A powerful bust of energy or a powerful burst of speed, at a dangerus cost. Most engines could only live through 1 burst without suffering. Sorta like putting alcohol in your car. Or adding a few hundred extra grains of fine black poweder to a black powder rifle.

It would certainly be a good idea to have a method by which a vessel can -very- quickly move itself out of a danger zone (I'm thinking traders..)

Here's my thoughts...

The Capacitor Gizmo: Cost- 10000c
Energy- full battery

Gives 5 seconds of 0 energy usage, high damage weapons. All energy weapons are boosted to 2x damage for this period, and refire rates are boosted 4x (as in 1/4 the old reload time). During these 5 seconds, the battery does not recharge. After the 5 seconds are up, the battery begins charging and all energy weapons that were fired during the Capacitor boost mode are burnt out, necessitating their repair/repurchase

This mode also allows high-speed boost. For 5 seconds you can travel at approximately 700 meters per second. However, at the end of this time, there is a 50% chance that your Turbo Mode will be permanently burnt out and that your engine's top speed will be reduced by half. That means that you will have to purchase new ones.

Also during this mode, because all energy is being reutilized, any damage that you take is 5x the usual damage values.

Finally, note that you cannot fire explosive weapons (rockets, homers, etc) during this capacitor mode).

COOL!!

why cant rockets be used? they'd just be normal dmg though. And this would lead to people just putting on 2 adv gats, flying at you, then turning on the capacitor. owch.

Or..... there's just the charged cannon.

Maybe you should be talking new weapons. I for one don't want to see gravitrons firing at twice their speed. .135/second blast of 800 dmg each. Ouch

yeah... the original way was better. you can fire once or twice and do a lot of damage and the shots go faster and farther, but your gun becomes useless

Idea:

Having a capacitor will add another battery indicator to the right of the current one, this would display your capacitors charge.

A capacitor will constantly drain 1/2 the recharge speed of the battery, even if it is full. You can deactivate it, but it will lose its charge quickly.

Gradual bursts:
If you use a weapon when it is charged, it will basically act like there were 2 of the weapons, the real one would use normal energy, the fake one would use capacitor energy, but capacitor energy drys up quickly so this would only be useful for hit and run, also the reload time the weapon would be doubled when you run out of capacitor energy, (as in it fires less often)

One big burst:
If you use a weapon when it is activated, all the energy points inside the capacitor would go into a single blast of the weapon you fired, if the weapon uses energy. If it is a small port weapon, it will be fryed for 1 second, a large port weapon will be fryed for 2 seconds.
How it would modify dmg of weapon:
S slot:
(dmg)+energy in capacitor=total dmg
L slot:
(dmg)*(3rd digit of energy in capacitor)=total dmg
