mineral scanner vs. prospecting missions

@Cunjo: When you say 3000m range, are you saying that you'd still have to target individual riods, or do you get a constant readout of mineral percentages in a sphere with that radius?

I think either of those is a reasonable alternative to seeing the entire sector. However, I think that Leber makes some worth while points. What about the possibility of sectors becoming popular enough that miners meet each other there and start learning to work together. Fighting guilds start like that in Deneb, Pirate guilds in Sedina. Why not end up with some true mining guilds starting because some people started mining in the same sectors?

I definitely like the idea of making the roid fields stretch beyond visual range and having to fly through the sector to find things.

I envisioned the big scanner to show general sector content, but not individual riod composition. You'd still have to scan individual ones.

Also, to help protect some people's sensibilities don't forget that these scanners should be based on license levels. Not everyone who completes the 120 prospecting missions will be able to easily find every helio riod in the galaxy because they won't be able to buy the sector scanner that can see that type of mineral until a pretty high mining level (I'd say 10 or 12 at least).

I seem to agree more with Cunjo's alternative. However, instead of expanding the adv scanner's range, just make it stackable like the storm extenders. If you load 4 on a hornet, you'll have a range of 3,000 m. That distance is fairly reasonable.

I don't think the regular scanners should stack though. There should be some exclusive benefits to those with the prospecting badge. Convoys shouldn't drop adv scanners either, at least not as often as they do.

By the way, I've always kind of taken interest in the idea of a variety of colors for the scanner. It'd be kind of cool if there was another scanner that could match the color of your ship.

As long as we're drifting off topic (color of scanner), I'd *really* like to see the "scanner" have to actually scan before it registers a roid's composition.

That big green arc is visable from miles off... makes hunting prospectors easier!

Request seconded, the animation is really cool and pointless atm.

I'd prefer the scanner to be user activated, too.

Even if it will require keypresses, and becoming clearly visible to the space scum, it would also eliminate the really irritating "5 seconds lag" that the present activationless scanner has.

How about an active scanner instead of the current passive types.

Basically the thing would need to be charged up a while, then fire off a possibly directed pulse, which causes roids with the minerals, the scanner is attuned to, to reflect the pulse causing some sort of visual indication of the amount and general location of the found roids. It would be used sort of like a sonar.

The device should not give a scan in the same sense the mineral scanners do, it should be slow to avoid people simply mapping every interesting roid in every sector, this could be achieved by making each pulse require a charge or full bar of energy, and lastly firing of the pulse should be noticable to people in the system or at least in the nearby sector.
