So, how many roids would say "PENIS"?

Whistler said: My concern would be that I would have to load any deviation from the standard 'roid texture whenever I enter a sector.
No, nothing would be visible which would require more textures, it would just alter the text in the description. No big (You know, when you target the asteroid)

Roguelazer: I assume that the profanity filter would still be active on these things.

"this roid has been treated with preparation H"

mine it as it shrinks

I'm with LeberMac: The filter would have to be active for this. People who don't like abusive or offensive language would not see it.

well the only problem i can see is that even if you put a filter on it someone is bound to find a way to put something offensive on it... ex.

someone may find it offensive if they have hemorrhoids and find someone making a joke about it... i can see it now... some guy flies up to a roid that says "Hem's Roid... please don't touch" and starts a frenzy about it and sues Guild over the mess... that would suck my friends... but it would be a hilarious trial...

No one's gonna sue Guild SW over something like this.

If it can be said on 100, it can be written on an Asteroid. And the chat filter will have to work in both instances.

There are still those who dodge the filter. What about that? >_>

Shit happens.
Feb 12, 2007 Argus11 link
don't get me wrong... i love the idea... (i might even write a few stupid things like that)... but people can sue for anything and they do... even if they are wrong or loss the case they are still taking up a huge amount of resources... regardless, i'm just saying that it's possible and it's something that should be considered. in the end though, i still support the idea.

I think you're smoking crack, Argus11. I'm gonna sue you for making me respond to your post! I've been mentally damaged for reading it! (Of course I am kidding.)

And so you dodge the filter. So? Someone says something on 100, or someone writes something on an asteroid. What's the difference?

The database could simply record who wrote the message. People could post nasty things in the forums here too, that gets dealt with.

Besides, the only people who would risk getting banned for dumb joke, aren't going to be stopped by any filter.
Feb 12, 2007 LeberMac link
I don't recall anyone in V-O ever, Ever, EVER being banned from the game for anything they have said on 100 or on the VO forums.

'Course, maybe I haven't been paying attention.

Nice joke.

nope... no crack... i'm too poor... lol!

no, for anybody from who has herd about all the law suits against fast food restaurants here in the USA you know that people sue over some really stupid $#!%... now, i've never used channel 100 (at least that i can recall... i don't pay much attention) regardless, i don't see anyone being punished or booted for going around the filters. the problem is that if guild takes a hit for it we are all screwed...

that why i purpose a Mafia formed by the players to destroy anyone who tries to sue... (just kidding! {that was a crack comment})

i want to see this in game but i also don't want to see problems... the reason that i bring up this idea is to find a solution before there is a problem...
Feb 13, 2007 LeberMac link
Well, actually, the guides & devs are actually pretty good about laying down the law when necessary.

Like, when I made a character called "Duck Rapist" in response to a thread on the forums here, that got shot down by RelayeR (or was it Obsidian?) after about 5 minutes of saying nothing but "Quack." and/or "Quaaaaakck!" It was mildly funny to those who had read the thread. Others simply were confused.

So, the rules are enforced, but I like to think that the enforcers provide as much leeway as possible. I'd hate this game if it turned into a mickey-mouse nitpicking "Be Nice"-fest.
Feb 13, 2007 Zed1985 link
Well the Be Nice - fest as you put it only becomes neccessity if kids play, and since it's a game kids will play...

I would really love it if VO had an 18+ age policy, not a restrictive one, so as long as parents give consent kids can play. But well that would let rude people like DrLecter keep on talking like they want.

Personally I don't condone using bad language, there is really no point. You can always say the same thing without resulting to cursing, but sometimes it really helps to vent some steam.

Yes there should be rules set, and profanity filters are a good thing, It just shouldn't be uber restrictive.

Just don't forget : other players have full rights to this game as well, and there is no reason that they should take crap from anyone, just because that person wants to be abusive.
Feb 13, 2007 Argus11 link
it is already... credit card... ah-ha! you must be 18 to have a credit card so kids only play the free trial or with parental consent as is...

"want to see what's inside? ;-)"
"I'm lonely"
"mine me and i'll stand in front of your next jump."
"actually, i'm a very slow comet"
"no no!!! please!! NOOOOOO!!!!"
"look behind you..."
"don't make me send a bot after you..."
"look! a distraction!"

----
and for the abusive...

"Mike Hawk was here"
"Skinny Wangs rocks... stay off"
.... I'm sure that i could do more but this kinda joke really is dumb to me... i'm gonna go do something constructive now...

iTripped takes his scribing beam out and tattoos 'Root Beer' across the stern of LeberMac's hull.

Yep, that oughta do it.
