Exploding cargo

I think it would be a good idea to have it so that, when your ship is destroyed, some of your cargo is destroyed with it, or at least reduced to scrap metal. This would make piracy less profitable, and encourage the remaining pirates to try to "persuade" their prey to jettison their cargo instead of just going in with guns a-blazing.

Perhaps make it so that different cargo types are more volatile than others. Maybe even make it so that certain weapons are more likely to destroy cargo than others, creating a new class of "pirate weapons" that would trade certain advantages for the ability to disable their prey while keeping most of their cargo intact, finally giving a purpose to all those Tachyon-clones cluttering up the weapons list.

So, anyone else think this is a good idea?

Actaully, that is a good idea. We have no pirates now, because they kill their prey 100% of the time. There needs to be a reason to introduce "REAL" pirates, who steal without killing. This sounds as good as any. But let us have explosive widgets. Mines that look like cargo boxes and explode when picked up... mmm...

Explosive widgets would be cool if they implement scanners, so that it would take longer for a pirate to scoop up cargo, leaving them more vunerable. It would just be annoying if there was no way to tell the difference between regular cargo and bombs, though.

As I said before, they'd have to give you some sort of scanner if they did that, otherwise it would just be annoying. Every tactic must have a counter-tactic.

What I'd like to see is cargo that explodes a random amount of time *after* it gets picked up, and does a ton of damage (enough to kill most ships) on explosion... *drool*

That would be cool, provided said cargo had a unique icon on the cardo display on the HUD, so that an alert player would be able to identify and jettison it before it went off.

I also think it might be cool for certain types of highly volatile cargo to sometimes detonate when the ships take damage, causing even more damage, and possibly leading to chain-reaction effects if the player is carrying other volatile cargo in his/her hold.

Maybe even have some special ships that trade certain advantages for better containment systems for cargo, making it easier to transport the more dangerous stuff.
