Another weapon idea..

Jun 21, 2003 Buckaroo link
... it's based on a rl weapon - laser guided missiles.

They should have two components:

a) a *real* laser which illuminates a target resp. a specific target area of a capital ship

b) Homing missiles which are so agile that they are impossible to dodge - but which would only home to an illuminated target. The homing missiles could also be nuclear ones.

This would make teamwork quite interesting - you want a certain target dead? Illuminate the target and let your team mates shoot the guided missiles.

The target now has two choices:

a) Trying to get out of the laser beam which illuminates him

b) Destroying the ship illuminating him.

This could actualy work. (don't make them impossible to dodge, just very difficult to)

Would it go fast enough to hit someone who was turboing? And what's stopping someone from putting both the laser and the missile on their ship? That wouldn't require any team work. And what's the range of the laser. If you're close you'll be able to break connection with the laser for long enough that you can avoid the missile, but if someone's doing it at 3000m you're screwed.

Eldrad: of course, the missile should go fast enough to hit someone who was turboing - otherwise you could use swarms instead.

And both laser and missile should be large port weapon, so the only ships capable of using laser and missiles are Ragaroeks or Centaurs - both are too clumsy to keep a laser lock on a dodging ship.

It's called "painting." You paint the target.

A while ago I suggested a tracking gizmo (dont know if it ever made it into the "giszmo thread" or not).

This would be a small-weapon-slot missile that did no damage. But once it hit it would stick to your ship and could only be removed by docking in a station and paying for a repair.

The gizmo, once attached, would increase all homing-missile capabilities against that target. In other words, they would turn better, track better, and maybe even move faster.
