Special Capital Ships

Aug 16, 2003 Sage link
Are we going to have these for each nation? Because I have some ideas.
Each nation gets its own special cap ship, much like the special ships now, only bigger.

The Serco Juggernaut:
The engineers of this ship focused on sheer power. Consequentially this monolithic battle cruiser has the ability to both recieve and inflict heavy damage. Such prodigious amounts of firepower and armor plating have a price, however, the juggernaut is also the slowest ship in space. Nonetheless the sight of a juggernaut strikes fear into the hearts enemy commanders.

The Itani Magellan:
Mobility was the doctrine behind the design of the Mageallan. An elegant craft that moves with extreme quickness making it adept at dodging capital ship class weapons. In order to attain such speed, the designers of the Magellan had to strip it down so it has very little hull plating and only a spattering of weapons. The bulk of the Magellan's firepower comes not from its own weapons, but from the fighters it houses in its cavernous fighter bays. The Magellan carries more fighter bays than any other ship in space and many hapless commanders have fallen prey to the swarms of Valkyries that issue from these seemingly feeble carriers. The Magellan's agility make it ideal for quick, hit-and-run attacks across sectors and their speed has made them perfectly suited to guard the expansive Itani empire.

The Neutral Avenger:
The privateers who own avengers value flexibility above all else. It is a relatively small ship with a respectable amount of firepower and many small turrets making it ideal for destroying fighters. Its modest large port's however make it slightly weaker against larger more heavily armored capital ships like Battle-Cruisers and especially the feared Juggernauts. It has a few fighter bays, which may be retooled to increase its cargo capacity and its above average speed has made it invaluable for swelling the ranks of the Neutral Defense forces in time of need.

Feel free to critique.

So if i judge correctly then:

use itani batlecruiser to kill the serco one, but use a serco one to kill a neutral one , and use this one to kill an itani one easilly :D

These ships are not balanced against each other. All that matters is that the nations are balanced, not the ships themselves. Right now with only one special ship to make each nation different and unique, the ship balance=nation balance. But as we get more and more ships, and more importantly, more and more specials we will need to consider balance more in terms of overall performance instead of ship to ship combat.
That being said the Juggernaut would kill both of them pretty easily. That's why it will be much more expensive. Not including the cost of all the weapons to arm it. If a Magellan or Avenger happen to run into one without some sort of heavy battle-cruiser support, they are done for. Their best bet is to run away which they are very capable of thanks to the Juggernaut's slowness. The Avenger would probably kill a Magellan in a straight up fight but the Magellan is excellent for supporting other capital ships.
The Juggernaut is a flagship: great for destroying other capital ships and installations.
The Magellan is a support ship: Designed to help the Itani heavy cruisers by bolstering their numbers, providing fighter defences, and running interference or "softening up" the enemy.
The Avenger is a "Jack-of-all-trades" sort of ship: Filling whatever role it needs to much like the British privateers against the Spanish Armada. It can deal moderate damage to capital ships. It can destroy waves of fighters, or it can be a cargo vessel depending on how it is outfitted.

Ay pavan, But I draw my coclusion based on what you wrote yourselve:

serco : big mean heavy lumbering piece of metallic artillery ship. So if it gets swarmed by fighters, it can turn fast enough or do anything usefulll to avoid them, it needs its own figters to do that. So therefore if A juggrnaut gets attacked by the fighters of a Magellan the ship is dead, naturally the magelan will run all the time and lets its fighters do the actual work of killing the big ship.

itani: a lot of fighters but good to run with. Now the Avenger will kick its ass becaue like you stated it is very good at killing waves and waves of fighters"valkyries", and therefore renders that advantage void, at the same time it has more firepower and slightly lessa gility as a magellan and therfore can kick maggellans butt with ease :D

Neutral: easilly killed by a serco Juggernaut, it cant run fast enough to really avoid all the damage that a serco ship will put on an Avenger.

So thats why I came to the conclusion of this rock/paper/scissors derivate "me eyes celkan :D". Besides it is almost used in every other spacegame or any rts :D

My conviction was just to let battleships be good at killig everything but if it encounters a carrier then say goodbye to the battleship, not because of its superb firepower , but because a magellan can attack a ship that is out of effective countermeasure range. But naturally a carrier can be easilly taken donw by a submarine or something anti aircrafty :D

Naturally this difference wont be as big as just shoot it once and it will be killed because that will be boring, but they will have a clear advantage over any of the other ships an maybe will make it interesting to see a fleet of sercos with as well a confiscated magellan or a smuggled in Avenger when they attack the neutrals or the Itani.

cheers

Well, I didn't say the Juggernaut wouldn't have fighters of its own. It has its own turrets and fighter support to deal with carriers coming after it. It just so happens that the Magellan has more than any other ship.

And the Avenger could easily outrun a Juggernaut. The Juggernaut would be able to hit it, but not damage it heavily. Not before the Avenger manages to hitail it to the next sector and call for reinforcements.
