Unrealistic maneuverability

Here's an actual suggestion for the devs:

Why not assign a team of people who play now (possibly nighty and celebrim?) to wriet a "scientific" overview of the ships and technologies in vendetta. If you want an example of what I mean, look at The Half-Life mod Natural Selection. They didn't want Friendly Fire in the game, which is terribly unrealistic, so they used nano-technology to compensate, but saying that the bullets have nanos in them that would dismantle the bullet if they got near a friendly unit, also full of nanos. It was lame, but it worked well enough that nobody goes "Hey, I shot my teammate! Why isn't he dead?"

I think this kind of system could work well, and if we got people who understood this well enough, it could be pretty cool too.

saying "it's because of nanobots" is only a pseudo-scientific way of saying "it's *magic*!" ;D

"Current retro-rockets don't even have to utilize fuel. Something as simple as compressed air can provide propulsion."
-So instead of using fuel you want to give up your life-support. No thank you.
Besides, think of the network lag that would be involved in animating retro-rockets. Not to mention the fact that retros never provide equal thrust compared to the main thruster.

"What?! Now you're just inventing some fictional force. Unless you've got some scientific backing with the way you're asking, I'll have to shake my head in disgrace towards you."
-Um, gravity is not a fictional force my friend. A Gravitic drive would basically make a gravity well in front of you thereby pulling your ship towards it. The gravity well would move around based on where you want you ship to go. It's reasonable in some distant distant future.

Then there was Celebrim's idea of an engine that crawls along the fabric of space-time. That was feasable.

Or we could just say it is a technology beyond our current understanding. Remember, any tech that sufficiently advanced beyond your experience will seem like magic. Watch Stargate if you don't believe me.

Pavan, you don't get gravity outta nowhere. That's what I meant by fictional force. The closest you'll get to it is by having a spinning wheel station design, which is what the current stations have. And that alone seems to suggest that the people of the Vendetta universe have yet to discover a way to create artificial gravity, outside of the concept of centrifugal force that is. So in other words having gravity shifters or whatever to control the ships' direction would be outta the question.

Um. Arolte. No one actually knows what gravity is. Personally, I'm all for an inertialess drive, a la Clarke 3001. The energy in a space the size of a coffee cup could outshine the galaxy... Mmm...

"Pavan, you don't get gravity outta nowhere."
-As far as we know. This is Science Fiction and takes place thousands of years in the future. Who is to say what the nature of Gravity is.

"The closest you'll get to it is by having a spinning wheel station design, which is what the current stations have."
-Maybe the spinning wheel is just a cheaper solution so setting it up for a large space station is just more feasable.

The more I think about it, the more it would make sense in the Vendetta universe. You could even use it to explain the speed limits. The gravity field can only be moved at a maximum speed. If the ship exceeds that speed it will end up with the gravity field in the center of the ship and crush it, so the engines have a failsafe that prevents it from happenning. Think about it, it works.

Actually I think the Prometheus has maneuvering thrusters on the ship, and they go in about every direction. Just pointing it out.

Definitely, Celkan. That's what I tried to point out earlier. So it looks like the devs are already trying to experiment with the idea of retro-rockets. The shapes of some of the thrusters also indicate vector thrusting, especially in the Valk's design. Most likely this was intentionally done. So at least there's some realism tossed in there.

/me calls to waylon and asks did you deliberately calculate the thrusters in or was it just to make it look cooler :D

/me hears the thundering voice of waylon say : cool what else, Im a graphics expert, not a scientific genius :D

cheers

Nice to hear someone agree with me for once.
