Taxi service for players

Sep 03, 2003 alienb1212 link
I'm sure it's been said before, but I can't seem to find it.

Would it be possible to have a player be able to get out of his/her ship and be transported to another station via another player's ship? I'm thinking like the old PC game Hardwar.....anyone know the reference?

Sounds awefully boring to me.

I'm sure its possible but it does raise a bunch of issues.

What happens when the Taxi logs out but you don't?
What happens when you log out before getting delivered?
What happens if someone picks you up but refuses to deliver you?
What can you do or see while a passenger in another vehical?

Most of the time when we have discussed 'passengers' in the past it has been with reference to manning turrets on larger ships, but while its generally agreed that this is a worthwhile feature no one I know of has taken a serious stab at the issues involved and the devs haven't revealed what they are planning. For my part, I think PC passengers are fine, but NPC passengers (as a mission subset) and NPC controlled turrets are better. Its good to have social interaction in a game. It's better to not have to depend on social interaction in order to play.

What happens when the Taxi logs out but you don't? -you're returned to your home, or the sector that they picked you up in, your option.

What happens when you log out before getting delivered? -same as above

What happens if someone picks you up but refuses to deliver you? -they suck, and you activate your Thermal Detonator. (once again, same as above)

What can you do or see while a passenger in another vehical? -same views that you've got now, just no control over the ship whatsoever

"What happens when the Taxi logs out but you don't? -you're returned to your home, or the sector that they picked you up in, your option."

Fine, the Taxi driver loses his connection after transporting you 30 minutes across the galaxy. He comes back, but his fare is gone. Sucks to be him? Sucks to be you? Worse yet, its not a Taxi but a warship, and it briefly loses connection. Suddenly, all its turret gunners are scattered half-way across the galaxy.

"What happens when you log out before getting delivered? -same as above"

Ooops, my Taxi is about to die and I don't want to. I guess I better log out.

"What happens if someone picks you up but refuses to deliver you? -they suck, and you activate your Thermal Detonator. (once again, same as above)"

Great, I don't even need to log out, I can just use the panic button to get home.

"What can you do or see while a passenger in another vehical? -same views that you've got now, just no control over the ship whatsoever"

Again, sounds boring. What purpose does the taxi service serve that alot of people are going to spend 30 minutes being driven around from place to place? Would alot of people accept rides in taxis in the current universe?

Well, we already know that there will be gunners (it's on the official gs page) in ships, and multiple pilots and whatnot, so I guess taxis aren't unreasonable... And it could be fun if taxi ships had no weapons but went very fast, making them only useful as taxis and not too boring. For the traveler, well, put in solitare.

Celebrim, notice the name of the thread, I did not name it, "capital ship pilot problems"

in response to "Ooops, my Taxi is about to die and I don't want to. I guess I better log out." Well, if your taxi dies, you're back at your home sector anyways, what's the point??

and ""What happens if someone picks you up but refuses to deliver you? -they suck, and you activate your Thermal Detonator. (once again, same as above)"

Hmm not sure, mabe if they deviate from your agreed upon course, or they take too long. something to be worked out.

Also- if it sounds boring, dont do it! I don't remember making it mandatory that you use a taxi to get between sectors! I'm saying it'd be a cool thing to have, and I know SOME people would use it.

I like rogue's ideas about the taxi/scoutship

er, better idea -

for taxis: Make it so that if the pilot logs off, an NPC pilot automatically returns the ship to home.

for ships - NPC players replace humans, and if the pilot leaves, someone else gets switched - It flashes "Pilot error" or something til someone switches - not hard.

If the Taxi ship somehow had a way to jump more than one sector away, it may also help. If they don't have weapons, but go very fast and can jump like that, seems like it would work pretty well.

I like idea of 'switching' the ship's control. Heck, that could be fun just in the middle of a battle, not even loosing someone. I mean Han let Chewy fly while he shot down ties, sounds good to me.

/me dreams
would be really cool if it was like a first person view inside the ship, walkin around to other stations and whatnot, man that would be sweet, hehe
