Realism in Physical weapons...

You know how in real life, people are constantly cleaning up the messes from old wars? Like, undetonated mines... shells that never exploded when they hit.. old bunker buster bombs burried in a landfill somewhere, forgotten.

Well, how bout a little of this in the game? Now, try an stay with me ;)

Rather than have the server try to keep track of items that don't go off, unexploded mines.. missles.. all that. You could base it on a random chance percentage. Every so often, the server just makes a random draw of numbers, and, if it hits the right ones, something happens, it then randomly draws a player.. or victim, in this case.

For the victim, a variety of things could happen. Starting with, hitting a piece of space junk that just happens to be a dark, unexploded, inactive mine that just happens to go off because you hit it to hard. Or maybe a missle that was just laying in space, out of fuel, sitting still or moving because its hit other things without going off, and your the unlucky one.

The second part of it could be random chance of mechanical failure. Either handeled by the server or the client, doesnt matter. Could be something simple, like your hud suddenly flickering a bit, annoying, but not deadly. Or perhaps the HUD goes away entirely... Maybe you hear a boom, and your top speed suddenly drops, you blew an engine?... Perhaps your battery wears out and suddenly wont hold much of a charge. Hey, maybe the cargo button malfunctions and you lose half what your carrying!

We could have a lot of fun with little problems like this?

That would be annying. I'll bet that 2 days after being put into action people would cry for it to be removed. Imagine, you are trading, got a ton of very expensive cargo in your maud, then all the suddenly you explode, dieng and losing all that money. You had no warning, saw nothing, only died.

The only thing i think this would effect would be mines, since in space, there is no resistance, shells would travel on forever into infinity.
Now i wish that mines and bullets lasted longer/went farther...

/me looks through his post for any mention of instant death, expliding, or losing everything...

Alright, didn't find one mention of instant death, so what the heck are you talking about Skyfox?

The point of the post, which seems to have been completely missed. Is that by random chance, accidents could happen. Lots of other flight/fighting games have random events. Monsters pop out of nowhere, and engine dies in an airplane your flying.

I was attempting to describe how to implement such a system in vendetta, to keep players alert on those long cargo hauls, not kill people off instantly.

As a second matter, no little, 1 event every few hours/days is gonna be noticed over a few hundred, thousand or more players. You'd probably get hit by random fire once in a years span if not less...

I events like these would make interesting tiny plot opening sequences for out of the way places in out of the way sectors, especially if it led to a mission offer or clue.
