Ship-Datapad/Manufacturing/Sedina H5

greetings.

i'm sure the idea is not new... but how about making every player controlled ship drop a ship specific data pad? for example i meet an Itani Valkyrie, piloted by another player and defeat him in a PvP battle. his ship drops a "Itani Valkyrie Ship-Datapad (1cu)".

these datapads could be used to "re-build" the ship later. and here is where Sedina H-5 gets into the game: allow all players to dock with this station, don't give it a NFZ or station guards and just let it have the ship specific manufacturing missions. and free cells/EC 89s.

so lets say i destroy this Itani Valkyrie and scoop the core. i pick it up and then bring it to that station, allowing me to re-build that ship if i turn in the datapad+a ton of other manufacturing material that i have to gather from stations (e.g. itani education discs!").

that is an easy way to make more manufacturing possible, allow sorts of "ship trading", making a kind of "pirate" station with no NFZ, open a player market for ship datapads and giving non-faction personnel access to the top tier ships. they just need to work really hard to get one.

of course there needs to be a bunch of missions designed, listing the material needed for building the various ships. but i suppose that is easy enough.

-1 If you want a specific ship, go find and buy/build it yourself.

An interesting mechanic but its a lot of work to implement and could lead to trophy hunting as well.

-1 No.

1. Rebuilding nation specific ships requires you to have access to their blueprints, nation specific technology, tools and materials in order to be able to do it.

2. Data pad can contain what, ship blueprints? What military in the universe would put a data pad with ship blueprints on the ship?

Circumventing faction redux (that took long 10 years to get implemented) like this just so you can fly other nation specific ships goes against the basic premise of why we have faction system with faction/nation exclusive ships in the first place.

Black market idea with the 'refurbished' ships was a good suggestion, this one - no.

If you want to fly a valkyrie - create and level Itani alt.

Not really. If I read it right, the datapad would be consumable, meaning this would only let you make one ship per dead ship. It would actually be less of a circumvention than the black market with refurbished ships, since it would require you to kill the ship you want, retrieve the data pad, and then do a manufacturing mission. As opposed to just buying a ship from the black market.

To the OP, I offer a few suggestions:

First, instead of it being a datapad, make it some kind of part that nobody has figured out how to reproduce yet. That way the consumable nature makes more sense. It might also make sense for the part to be large (60+ cu) to make transporting it and trading it more difficult.

Second, you didn't say whether it would have a random drop rate or 100%; I say go with something like 5%.

Third, you might want to make it harder for people to just grind up their own ships so they can sell the parts to others. Forbidding it from dropping when /explode is used is one way. Another could be to make it only drop in areas where that ship isn't sold, so that people will have to at least travel to another system before farming their ship.

I would still prefer normal ship trade (along with a contraband system to make it risky), but this could be a nice thing to have in addition to that (e.g. for when you can't find somebody who will sell you a ship).
