For me personally, I find the "Eve approach" works pretty well; that is to say, I don't worry about keeping other players around at all. They will either like the game, or they won't.

However, I am not at all hesitant to talk about my personal experiences with Vendetta, which I find to be one of the greatest videogames of all time. I try not to "promote" it on other web sites (something I've been overzealous about in the past), but if anyone asks about the game I've been playing for 13 years I have no qualms discussing its mechanics and why I feel it is such a good game.

As a subscriber I get monthly 2-week friend keys, up to 5 at a time, which I can give away. Certain websites like mmorpg.com used to have a Vendetta sub-forum which was a good location to offer friend keys. This is a nice way of introducing new players to the game, because they feel gifted with something and I also receive a sense of good will by giving something away. Spacesimcentral.com has a Vendetta subforum but is less heavily trafficked. There is also r/mmorpg, r/spacesimgames, and r/vendettaonline. I have tried other subreddits and been met with little success, but you may fare better than me. I believe it depends on one's own personality and experience.

Quarter To Three has a very active forum and is home to Brian Rubin: somewhat of a space Sim game Guru there, who recently did a two hour long+ interview with John Bergman in part of a podcast. They seem very receptive now to hearing about what is going on in Vendetta in a honest and candid way.

I also feel like we should be able to drum up some additional interest in Vendetta on Penny Arcade's forums. They are the community generally credited with first bringing Vendetta into mainstream public awareness back in 2002. However, their MMORPG sub-forum has nearly no mention or representation of Vendetta. If somebody wants to start a well-put-together introductory thread (with pictures, links, and testimony), it may go over well. This is probably a couple hour endeavor, at least.

Important to note that I've found overt promotion doesn't work per se: honesty is more important. Writing frankly about personal experience can be a powerful example. In business parlance, I believe this is known as "product evangelism." It doesn't mean you go shouting praises from every rooftop, but when people are listening or genuinely interested there is no better way than discussing one's experience to introduce someone to something new.

I'm sorry if this post came off wordy; I am dictating it into my phone which is something new for me. In a nutshell, I feel that frankly discussing one's experience with someone else who has an interest in games is its own reward. There are friend keys that one receives for being a subscriber which is an encouragement to this.
