Automated Station Defenses

Jan 10, 2004 Darkstorm link
I put forward, after a fscking annoying/frustrating waste of my money (the camping of the primary base in Sector 7 by three of red faction and my destruction upon attempting to leave - repeatedly), stations should be equipped with defenses that automatically attack any person 'camping' near entrances and exits. I.e. if they're there for longer than 10 seconds, start wacking them with low-damage, high-velocity rounds. Or even high-damage, high-velocity. This would also counter the exit-mining by some other players of red faction of the same base. (Mines would be targeted along with players.) There is no valid reason to hover anywhere near a base unless you are planning to kill whomever exits.

3v1, where that one is a bus, is less than fair and I gaurentee will drive away prospective players VERY quickly - add to that the repeated messages to the effect of 'stfu and just die' don't help matters. I glean no enjoyment from pointless and hopeless battles while attempting to trade. Is there a reason Gold faction is titled 'Neutral'? Apparently not.

Voting. Begins! (*ding*)

we could revive the [S7] Turrets, but that might cause more problems than fixes :P

I believe such a thing is in the works. I have heard talk about a "No fire zone" around the station which, when violated, will cause either police bots or turrets to come on-line and pwn j00.

Yea, it would be nice if stations were equiped with heavy turrets to kill greifers. Yet, it would probably require for the reputation system to be added first...

Oh, and for now, the best method agianst campers is to l-mine. I was once camped by 4 reds, as soon as I started l-mining, they left in disgust. Course, i'm used to l-mining very quickly in harsh circumstances...

By l-mining you become a camper. If you (a blue) are being pirated by reds, and l-mine, suddenly you become hostile to both reds and golds.

A no fire zone... and a 10 second time limit...

That way when someone fires on you when your near the station, you cant fire back until your a safe distance from the station?

And so those times when your flying around the station cause you mistakenly headed for an exit instead of an entrance, if you take to long to get to that entrance, you get blown up?

Yeah, that really sounds like fun.. how bout some better ways of doing this.

How about just no firing within the vicinity of the station? Sounds fine to me. None of this getting blown up if you don't dock crap.

My only issue is that this system would make it even easier for Valks to run away. They won't even have to maneuver into the dock, just get into the no-fire zone. Then there really won't be a way to kill them in a slower ship.

Honestly, game architecture has not progressed to apoint to address this problem. I'd suggest waiting until the devs finish the reputation system. Griefers will then be somehow identified and a guild will be established to eliminate them.

Also, at said point, I would like to see the addition of militia bots in independent sectors to 'keep the peace.' Such bots would only fire upon individuals of ill repute.

As far as a reputation system goes, I think the devs should consider creating a penalty (bad reputation) for anyone who destroys a ship within, say, ten seconds of launch in a neutral sector (NOT NT). Please note, such a system would not apply to home systems, where all-out war exists for any non-nation ship.

Not a bad idea of an automated defence turrets on each station but this limits the freedom for people to explore the station especially for new players who are admiring the work of the devs and getting shot at for no reason.
