Ads for crystals

Many games have a system where you can earn currency by watching ads. Not forced ads, optional ones. I propose implementing it in VO for crystals. Full sub players don't need it.

15-second ad for 1 crystal
30 second ad for 2 crystals
1 minute ad for 5 crystal

This would be a very inefficient method of farming crystal. You can get crystal much faster from killing bots, or mining if you mine the right ores. And other crystal-giving activities do other stuff as well, such as giving drops, while watching ads only gives crystal. There could be a daily limit on this as well.

Personally, I don't really like ads in any game. But it's ok if they're optional, and it would provide Guild Software with more income. I don't know and can't comment on GS's financial position, but I don't really see something bad if they get a bit more income, which could be spent on hiring more developers or in advertising or whatever. It also gives a way to get income from f2p players, who many currently consider to be freeloaders/parasites.

What's the problem with the OP's suggestion, here? It's more useful to post a response than just a "-1".

I think it gives a bad impression and puts VO in a similar league to those weird time-gated android games. And because adverts in games can vary from adverts for weird time-gated android games to spyware and pornography. I could be convinced though. It could also ruin immersion.
I'm sure if you're thinking about this Daddy Inc, you'll have a good ad provider in advance so my criticism would be meritless.
Somewhere between a -0.5 and -1.

I'm not talking about putting pop-up ads between jumps or whenever you dock at a station or whatever. I'm talking about ads that come up only when you choose to see them. Only when you click on the ”Watch Ad" button. Not otherwise. This is a major difference from most ad-using android games, which force ads between scenes (clearly not possible in a twitch based MMO).

I personally would not like to see the adverts being added. VO is unique in this regard for not having any advertisements. And I quite like it.

If the ads are being added -

Ads should be fairly nice & by nice I mean for example - advertisements of laptops, keyboards, mouse, android phones & similar stuff (mainly electronics & nothing else really. Can say sort of semi hand picked)
These types of advertisements will be more appropriate for the game as well since it works on all platforms & advertising products players can actually buy to enhance their gameplay experience isn't bad at all.

Way better than having random ads which for the most part are horrifyingly bad.

Watching ads instead of shooting bots seems like a reasonable trade off. Would the daily crystal limit be the same for ads?

It would be fair to say, yah watching ads would have a daily crystal limit. In the end I would say Incarnate would determine the cap.

Currently the crystal limit for f2p players is 125(?) a day. From all activities (bot kills, mining, missions, trading) combined. Ads could have a limit of maybe 10-15 a day. Very low. So you don't have players just sitting in a station farming crystals by watching ads.

Tjgaming8234 I like the no-ads part as well. It's one thing that seperates VO from most other games I have played. But this would provide an additional source of income for GS, and would IMO be harmless if it's not forced on the players.

Also I think ads are targeted at particular devices/accounts based on analytics of what products are most likely to be bought by them. I'm pretty sure I've experienced that with other games, and seen the ads change when I changed my behavior.

This ads being targeted towards particular devices/accounts is the thing I mentioned not to do. Those are terrible.

If I'm gonna have to watch the type of ads I mentioned I'm fine with it. Otherwise a complete no from me....

I’m all for more ways to support GS.(only if it’s optional of course, forced ads have always made me despise games on the mobile)

+1

The ads are going to be optional in this scenario, so you don't have to do anything. The thing with ads, is that the devs will prob use an off the shelf mobile ad platform, to make sure the ads are targeted, and thus valuable to the advertisers.

Exactly. If advertising has to get any sizeable revenue, it has to be the targed stuff. The ads are usually dumb, yes. But if it's what the advertisers are paying for, it doesn't make sense IMO to reduce revenue for ad choice. Anyway, that's all Inc and Ray's decision.

I'd say if it's opt-in, as in you go to some tab in the PDA to do it on purpose, that'd be ok. If they just randomly pop up regardless of what you are doing, then it'd be a problem.

On a side note, we've got these neon signs all over stations, why not pursue some sponsorships. I don't mean to suggest make the stations all covered in crap like NASCAR. Or even use them to advertise upcoming events.

Not interested, It won't bring in much relative to someone paying for a lite sub or crystal, It doesn't encourage gameplay and finally the game's already free with only cap ships behind paywalls thus this suggestion reeks of a waste of time on both sides of the coin.

Rewarded video ads, which are exactly what is being described here (completely optional, user-chosen ad-viewing) are a major source of revenue in the mobile game industry.

Some brands are also doing very well with it in PC and Console.

Love this idea.. it checks a lot of boxes that are useful to players and developers.

1. Additional revenue
2. A way to earn more crystals if you want to play for free.
3. Optional and non-intrusive.

I'm of the opinion that there should be no limit to the amount of crystal that could be earned by an unsubbed or F2P player using this method.. since this makes the service more valuable to advertisers. In fact, I think there may be some good marketing there.. where the advertiser can pay more to give the viewer a higher amount of crystal.. list them by the amount of crystal you will earn to make that even stronger.

Many of us don't want to watch advertisements... certainly if we are paid subscribers it would be distasteful. However having an ad option doesn't harm anyone. I'm even ok with the idea of having levels of sub that allow you to choose to see ads in the ui for a lower cost sub. I won't use it, I like to pay..

Incarnate you have this paying customer right here saying "hell yeah!" .. you can take that few extra bucks and put it into all kinds of improvements to our beloved game.

I don't think making the limit infinite would be a good idea. If that were to happen, you'd have atleast some players who just automate the "Watch ad" button and afk for hours just farming crystal from it. And I don't know how smart the advertisers would be, but if I were in their place I wouldn't pay much per ad when there's a chance no one is even watching the ad.

If its an invasive ad, -1

Some games that I play on mobile offer ads as a way to "continue" or "revive" yourself in case you die, but don't force you to do so. Ads in VO could offer something similar, for e.g. if you die but don't have enough crystals for a rebuy, you get the option to watch an ad to pay for it.

This prevents you from actually getting any crystals, so you won't be able to farm them. You would also need to lose a ship, so you can't use this as a way to stockpile them.
